As Trump neared the end of his Asia trip Wednesday, he posted a new rant about Smith’s probe in which he attacked Smith as a “criminal” and referred to him and his team as “thugs” who belong in “prison”:

Trump linked to an article detailing allegations made by the Republican-led House Judiciary Committee.

Smith, for his part, has responded to a Judiciary Committee by offering, through his attorneys, to testify in public.

“Given the many mischaracterizations of Mr. Smith’s investigation into President Trump’s alleged mishandling of classified documents and role in attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 election, Mr. Smith respectfully requests the opportunity to testify in open hearings before the House and Senate Judiciary Committees,” Smith’s attorneys wrote.

Smith is just the latest in a list of Trump nemeses who have been targeted since he re-took office. Public pronouncements like these have preceded criminal indictments in several recent cases.

The mods have a history of deleting duplicate threads, which his was. He even went so far as to use the exact same thread title and called it The Official Jack Smith Thread even though mine had been created 3 months earlier in August.

Your duplicate Jack Smith thread had been around for weeks and I had never said anything about it before today - and my comment today in another thread was to point out your hypocrisy complaining about people creating threads with similar subject matter (like on the NYC Mayor's race and one on the newly elected Mayor himself).

My guess is the idea is the maga GOP will send a referral for some supposed perjury or other to Trump/Miller/Bondi, then they will indict Smith in Ft. Pierce / Cannon presiding for some awful crime committed in Trump’s golden bathroom in Maralago (different from the usual crimes against hygiene committed there). I’m sure that’s the game.

Jim Jordan is out of his league dealing with someone with credentials like that and would be torn to shreds by Jack Smith in a televised hearing.

Just to offer an opposing POV, the Garland normalized slow crawl to build a case was horrible error. And then Smith not including sedition in the charges was an error, but I’m absolutely positive he did it the way he did for good reason. But his testimony above certainly suggests sedition. I also think filing in SDFL & risking Cannon was a mistake. Again I understand why he did it. But these choices - Biden going with the carefully procedural Garland, the refusal to throw the most awful charges at Trump, the responsible choice of venue based on where the documents were stored - netted Smith nothing from maga. Fwiw Mueller made similar mistakes, but he was constantly constrained by Barr & Rosenstein.

Or….the 2020 election was stolen they knew it and they pinned their hopes on Trump not winning in 2024 and it could all be swept under the rug.
