When I said Detroit was a shell of his former self, I was thinking of the glory days of the 50's. As for towns I actually like, I'd say any small to medium size towns that haven't been liberalized. New Ulm Minnesota comes to mind. Key Characteristics of Detroit's Golden Age (1950s): Automotive Powerhouse: Detroit was the center of the global auto industry, with the "Big Three" automakers providing stable, well-paying jobs. Population Peak: The city reached its largest population, 1.85 million, making it the fourth-largest city in the United States. Cultural Hub: The city was the birthplace of Motown Records, launching the careers of legendary artists and shaping American popular music. Sports Dominance: Detroit's sports teams, including the Red Wings, Lions, and Pistons, enjoyed significant success. The American Dream: For the working class, Detroit offered a high standard of living, with high wages and affordable housing. A Brief Overview of the "Glory Days" Period: Precursors to the 1950s: The foundation for Detroit's success was laid in the earlier 20th century with the rise of the automotive industry, which made the city a world-class industrial power and the fourth-largest U.S. city by the 1920s. The Peak Years: The 1950s saw the culmination of this growth, with Detroit considered the wealthiest city in the world at the time and a model for the working-class American dream. Today, its like most other large cities, only able to stay relevant thanks to Federal funding. Pandemic relief funds: Detroit was awarded $827 million through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) to assist with recovery efforts. The city has used these funds for home repair programs, job training, flood prevention, and legal aid for residents. Housing and community development: The city receives substantial funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). In 2024, it received $346.8 million in disaster recovery funds to improve flood resilience and affordable housing. It has also used federal grants for specific programs, such as the Renew Detroit initiative, which provides home repair grants for low-income seniors and disabled homeowners. Infrastructure projects: The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act is a source of federal funding for Michigan and its communities, including Detroit. For example, Detroit was awarded a $20.7 million federal grant for a greenway project to connect different neighborhoods. Down payment assistance: In 2025, a new program offered grants of up to $25,000 for qualified Detroit residents to help with down payments and closing costs when purchasing a home. The national context of federal grants It is common for cities and states across the U.S. to receive federal grants for various purposes, including health care, infrastructure, and education. However, the proportion of federal funding can be notably high in cities like Detroit that have faced long-term economic challenges, prompting greater investment to address persistent issues. I meant big cities. Is there any that the Geeks like? I haven’t been to Detroit for about 20 years but on that trip got turned around driving downtown and drove maybe 10 minutes in wrong direction. At one point drove by dudes standing around a metal barrel with a fire in it (was winter) on a block with like 10 houses that were burnt out. That was a bit wild. Had heard it was having a hipstery style come back over past 10 years or so. With some spots popping up here and there.

Voltaire 5,419 Posted 10 hours ago This is kind of funny, man. I was reading nytimes whine about the effects of the shutdown and it reads like political pron. My cup quickly began to overflow with leftoid nytimes tears, so I needed to go get three more cups so I could store the rest in the freezer. Full applause for identifying the chinks in the Democrats' armor and have the temerity it took to call their bluff. Trump can (and now has) rope-a-doped the Democrats into anything. look what they've done. The Democrats have chosen to allow Russ Vought to decide what gets funded and what doesn't. He's no doubt been waiting in anticipation for this moment ever since he took that job. Even though a lot of this will eventually get funded anyway when a deal is reached, some won't. There's a sense of real hope for permanent structural reform in the exact places where activist lower courts have deliberately gummed up the works. It's exciting to see play out. It's not zero pain. I mean, you can't be too happy when essential workers will have to forgo wages and wait to get backpay, these are good people and there are bills coming due in the meantime which they don't deserve to be caught short of cash for. There is a trade-off and it's coming on their backs and it's not fair to them. The reason I'm happy anyway is that this pain is only temporary, they will get backpay eventually, but the rest reads like a cornucopia of delayed relief that had long been needing to get done but until now had been blocked by activist lower court judges. Reforms we've been waiting nine months for are going to be in line to get unsealed and unclogged in the next few days since there is not enough money availible for all bills to be paid so things will have to get prioritized. It was especially gratifying reading about all those VOA sh*tbags getting canned less than two days after that turd judge decided that he had the authority to appoint himself CEO of VOA and usurp the decision making of that agency. That timing was particularly delicious. VOA has a proud history and done many good things so what's happened there has been particularly tragic, seeing how it's been compromised, it needs an extreme makeover to return to its original function and this shutdown offers the opportunity to do an end run around the activist leftoid judge to hopefully allow it to actually get one. More big pieces are finally allowed to come together now. Fund this, don't fund that. Vought is on it in a bigtime way. As the party in charge of Congress and the Presidency, the Republicans have to vote to keep the government open but frankly the country will be better off by giving this shutdown a few weeks to fully blossom and letting Russ Vought cook. The Dems are providing all but one of the no votes. Alrighty then. Like I said, it's mostly all going to eventually be re-funded anyway but the money being withheld is all Democrat priorities, they're the party that loves big, intrusive government. so fock it. Who cares? In the mean time, hopefully temporary changes can be backdoored into permanent changes at these (can't find the right adjective) agencies. As this goes on, hopefully these government workers hire in somewhere else and leave these agencies either replaced with reformers or unfilled vacancies. Cement it all in place with another three years of Trump, followed hopefully by eight of Vance. Thank You for the help, Dems. Keep holding your breath until you reach the shade of blue you like. I'm sure at some point the Republicans will stop laughing, dancing, and celebrating long enough to take pity on you. Then you'll get 'em!
