Can we discuss the suspension of SNAP benefits?   This is obviously bad.  For a lot of reasons.  1) there are 40 million people on SNAP...WTF?? I had no idea there were that many.  2) It seems, quite a large % of those recipients are undocumented...Or so I have seen browsing around.   Can't confirm this data.  Just what I saw

Now....with all that, it still is really bad that many people who actually need this assistance may not get it on Nov 1st.  This should absolutely be the reason the democrats come back and immediately vote on a CR to open the government back up.   There could be some significant issues with crime coming up in a week or so if this doesn't get fixed fast

I think a CR would take care of the immediate issue.

Mass deportations and keeping the border closed should resolve a lot of other issues eventually.

Democrats believe that when the new health care premiums for ACA hit on November 1, the public will blame Republicans and the GOP will quickly surrender.

Currently, as it stands, I can't support this program ending POOF......If reforms are needed, work them, but not instantly.

The other way illegals get food stamps is when they sneak across the border but then when they are caught yell asylum. They then are elligible. 

Once their asylum claim is lost, they appeal. Then appeal. Then do lots more legal maneuvering and get to stay for many many years before losing their 19th version of the claim. 

All the while collecting SNAP. 

Then there is a lag before they are officially deemed inelligible for benefits. 

These people were in reality illegal aliens the whole time with fake asylum claims collecting benefits.

Just did a media interview on this.  On a zoom right now about this.  About to jump on a call with our Senator's office on this issue.  

There is some implication with ACA and renewals on November 1 that I don't understand.  But it seems like Congress is using that date as leverage.  I bet after that we see some traction and movement.

As someone with direct knowledge of some of the inner workings of these programs, do you have any sense of how many people may be illegally obtaining SNAP benefits? Or conversely, how many folks that have been verified as legally eligible might lose assistance?

As to the 40 million- yes...there are a lot of people who qualify for SNAP benefits because they are so far below the poverty line. And yes, even some households with people working are well below that line. 

Say a 50 year old lives alone and is working for a fast food place at 10 dollars an hour. 40 hours a week would put them at 1600 a month.....they qualify even with having a job.

Last year I helped a family of refugees from Afghanistan obtain SNAP benefits. (I was a part of Welcome Corp, a wonderful Biden program for refugees which Trump killed.) The amount of paperwork to get the SNAP benefits was long and exhausting. Birth certificates, certified health records, I-94 papers. There is no way any undocumented immigrant can get these. It’s a total lie. 

This family of that I worked with 5 received $1600 a month in total benefits. That’s all. And you guys think people are taking advantage of this?

If I were to guess, I'd say that it's a little different for Afghan refugees to get SNAP than others. 

The USA had and still has a plan for the Afghan refugee crisis that occurred during Desert Storm. Their country has had over 40 years of conflict, and they helped us out GREATLY with translators and other functions. 

Are Afghans taking advantage? Probably not since they likely still use the Afghan Refugee programs. Do others take advantage? Absolutely. 

Not sure using Afghan Refugees who already have a program in place is the best example of people taking advantage.

Thanks but I wasn’t looking for plaudits. I wish I could do more. That program was terrific. My entire family volunteered to help out this Afghan family- we found them an apartment, got the kids into school, helped them get Snap, helped the parents find work. We still see them, still help them out as much as we can. It’s probably the most rewarding experience of my life.

Most likely scenario- tim made it up to try and illustrate that getting calfresh benefits is hard(it isnt) and that this would give him credibility with people like you. 

Less likely scenario- these afghan refugess will provide a benefit to tim somehow, so he is doing what he can to keep them in the area. 

Impossible scenario- tim actually helped them just because he wanted to help and it was hard to get the benefits.

Tim used to say things like I was listening to NPR and they had a family on that were afghan refugees. And they talked about how hard it was to file the paperwork. 

People of course would ask tim what program, what time, what was the name of the host, etc in order to verify if he was telling the truth. He was lying so he could never give these details. 

Now tim just makes up first person stories in order to make it unverifiable after getting caught lying so much.
