Most i saw was 1.99 lb for butterballs...99c a lb if you spent 200 over the last month on groceries

The great turkey price debate continues

Turkey hens sold for about $1.65 per lb last autumn, Purdue’s Center for Food Demand Analysis and Sustainability found, while they are expected to fetch $2.05 per lb on average this Thanksgiving.

A 12lb turkey costs wholesalers about $19, almost 70 per cent more than last autumn, the Department of Agriculture said. Supermarkets will therefore charge about $25 for a 12lb Thanksgiving bird, a quarter more than last year, researchers at Purdue University have forecast.

However, prices vary significantly as some supermarkets prefer to price their turkeys as loss leaders, encouraging customers to do the rest of their holiday shopping in their store. 

The American Farm Bureau Federation’s Thanksgiving consumer survey found turkeys advertised at less than $1 per lb by some retailers, despite the almost 70 per cent wholesale price increase on last year.

Turkey costs more overall, 70% according to Purdue’s Center for Food Demand Analysis and Sustainability. Being a IU Hoosier I normally don’t listen to those hillbillies from up north for anything but they do know agriculture.

Some retailers choose to subsidize the cost of the bird knowing people will buy all the other shet there.

According to the Purdue people and the American Farm Bureau Federation (whatever that is) wholesale turkey prices are up 70%. That’s what the turkey experts are going with.
