Some years back there was a guy, Eric Brandt, running that shtick in the Metro Denver area.  He demanded a meeting with me, hoping  I would overreact to his bare feet, unwashed self, profane and loud nature, and his sign.  He and a cohort were recording the interaction on their phones.  I invited them in, offered them a seat and a beverage, listened to their loud and profane attempts to agitate me and then, when they wound down, I responded in nearly a whisper which is attention getting.  I thanked them for their interest in seeing that our Officers have an active and varied sex life, told them I am happy to hear any of their other suggestions in the future, and then walked them politely to the door.  My refusal to take the bait seemed very disappointing to them.  

 

In government service I found it best to treat all citizens as if they were Supreme Court Justices or the spouses or family members of Supreme Court Justices.  Did I feel these folks were worthy of respect, no, but while on the clock I damn sure treated them as if they were whether that was true or not.  That's the job.

As long as we’re telling war stories, I was working plain clothes, snooping around a park. It wasn’t hard to tell I was 5-0. There were a few black guys sitting on a bench, not doing anything wrong.
