He really is. It’s always a good idea to stop and think awhile before writing stuff like this is the greatest story in sports of our lifetimes, but this might just be it.

Cignetti definitely knows what he is doing at the college level...

Too bad that WVU felt like that they needed to keep Neal Brown around a little longer instead of going after the him with his ties to the 'Eers...

I spent an hour reading his story last night, all his successes and was still trying to figure out how he was able to transform Indiana.  INDIANA!!! Props to that guy.  :shocking:

50 years since Bob Knight's perfect season in '76.  Now they do it again but in football.  Good for them.

Coach Cig has reached Bob Knight status is Bloomington in two years. Without the crazy hopefully.

Not particularly. All the major schools have access to this level of money. Mendoza was paid well but half of what the top QB’s got and wasn’t really hyped at all even in Bloomington.

This team was built from his transfers from his previous school. Lots of older, experienced and much lesser rated players. Those types of dudes were at every skill position, both lines, LB’s and secondary.

Duh.  But the point is Mark Cuban funded the NIL for Indiana.   Now that teams can legally pay players, like the SEC and OSU did under the table for years, these little guys will have a chance, as long a they have a funder or two out there.

Indiana won because Cuban funded them

You should take a look at the amount of 4 and 5 star players IU had compared to the other teams in the CFP.

Cignetti  - 19 and 4 at James Madison - you know. Because of NIL money

Yeah it’s like 7:1. IU had zero 5 star and like eight 4 star on this roster. Oregon had something like 60 of those guys.

Next year they are buying some transfers but recruiting class is still rated quite low.

ok Ok Ok....I mean it wasn't all Cuban.  Obviously need a good coach and talent evaluators.   I was just saying without Cuban's money.  Indiana would still be the worst college football program in college football history

You are quite a bit off base on this one. It’s ok though. Moving forward I’d love to see the Hoosiers have all the money and the best coach in CFB. The dues have been paid by Hoosier nation.

It has, but not as much as I was anticipating, Miami has more blue-chip players on the team. What I came away with was he's really good at identify the players that will excel in his system. Regardless, great game and a great job by Cignetti.

Lived in Bloomington for 20 years plus went to IU. Brother went to IU, Mom went to IU. Big time simp!

That aside why would you leave a place you built from nothing, where you are paid unlimited money now, where you are a living legend, people are talking about movies being made about you…to go to the Titans where no one gives a fock to get fired in 5 years.

I wouldn't worry about it.  Nothing is written in stone, but it doesn't sound like he's interested in that game.

Would Curt Cignetti ever leave Indiana for the NFL? Hoosiers coach 'made that decision a long time ago'

So, would the 64-year-old Cignetti ever consider an NFL job? He told reporters Saturday that he made his mind up "a long time ago" that he was a "college football guy" when he had a chance to take an assistant job with the Green Bay Packers. He went to NC State instead.

"I made that decision a long time ago now," Cignetti said via CBS Sports' Brandon Marcello. "Chuck Amato, NC State, in 2000. I had a chance to go with the Packers. Tommy Rossley, Mike Sherman, [Brett] Favre was in his heyday. I declined the opportunity. I almost took it. That's when I made the final decision. I've always been more of a college football guy."

I would be very shocked if he left IU. If he was 10 years younger maybe.

LSU got Saban for a song after he went 7-4 at Michigan State. Somehow now they think it makes sense to spend 50-100 million a pop on guys like Kelly & Kiffin Jr. Meanwhile Indiana wrecks everyone with the man from Jimmy Madison.

Glad IU won, glad a B1G team not from Ohio, Pennsylvania, or Michigan won the title. Or Iowa or Wisconsin for that matter.

But I gotta think the NCAA needs some serious controls on spending in place very, very soon. Every pissant school around (ahem, Minnesota) is now looking at the IU football program thinking they can duplicate that success if they just find the right coach/transfer/ridiculously wealthy alumni. It ain't happening. This was a lightning in the bottle moment; perfect guy, perfect place, perfect time, perfect circumstances. I can see the madness that has already enveloped the game getting far more insane than it already is.

It's a great story, but I don't like what I think will happen next.
