Consumer confidence in March soared to the highest level in more than 16 years, according to data released Tuesday.

The Conference Board said its consumer confidence index leapt to 125.6 in March from 116.1 in February, coming in well ahead of the MarketWatch-compiled consensus of 114.1.

The reading gave a pop to U.S. stocks DJIA, +0.73% , which turned higher after the report.

Consumer confidence has taken off since the election of President Donald Trump, on the prospect of lower taxes and more infrastructure spending. Confidence has yet to be impacted by Congresss inability so far to enact the presidents ambitions. The cutoff data for responses was March 16, before Republicans were forced to scrap a vote on repealing and replacing Obamacare.

Both the present situation and the expectations indexes improved in March.

The gains also cut across most regional and income groups. Perhaps not surprisingly, the higher the household income, the higher the consumer confidence reading. Only those with household income below $15,000 are less confident now than they were before the election.

Consumers felt more optimistic about the jobs market. The percentage of consumers stating jobs are plentiful rose from 26.9% to 31.7%, while those claiming jobs are hard to get decreased from 19.9% to 19.5%.

What are you going to do? You might have to actually get up off your fat a$$ and work for once.

"Mommy how come all the other kids get to stay home with their mommies and you work all day?"

"Because your dad is a focking loser and likes when I fock him in the a$$"

Ok. You guys know i have no political stance so know that when I say this.

In remember an econ professor in college saying the consumer confidence index was essentially worthless.

It always lagged behind reality and consumers as a rule are stupid.

He literally said stupid

These CC #'s seem to contradict his approval ratings - which you'd expect to go hand-in-hand if things were so peachy.. Trump obviously got a bump following the Inauguration and his SOTU address - all the wonderful things he promised injected a burst of confidence in consumers. We certainly saw evidence of this in the stock market.. But with the deadlock in Congress, the bickering with his own party, the investigations, his Twitter account, his Obamacare repeal bust and jobs & $$$ still flowing to Mexico - it will be interesting to see if those numbers hold true.
