Republicans Are About To Let Your Internet Service Provider Share Your Web History

Seen this story in a few outlets but here is link from Huffington Post. I'm sure they have overblown this some, but it should raise concerns for everyone.

WASHINGTON ― The Republican-led Congress is jamming through a measure to overturn the Obama administration’s rules that would have banned telecom and cable companies from sharing customers’ personal information, including web browsing history, without their consent.

The House is expected to vote on the bill on Tuesday. Its companion passed the Senate last week on a 50-48 vote, largely on party lines. If the House passes the bill and President Donald Trump signs it into law, internet service providers will win a regulatory victory. But advocates say consumers can kiss network privacy goodbye.

“ISPs will be able to sell your personal information to the highest bidder...and they won’t have any real obligation to keep your personal information secure, either,” said Gigi Sohn, who served as counselor to former Federal Communications Commission chairman Tom Wheeler from November 2013 to December 2016.

The FCC adopted rules last October that required companies like Comcast and Verizon to get their customers’ explicit permission before they could share “sensitive” data like Social Security numbers, information pertaining to children, or health information. Under the rules — which are not yet in effect — companies also had to tell customers and law enforcement if a potentially harmful data breach occurred. (Verizon is the parent company of The Huffington Post.)

So they're going to overturn rules that hadn't even been implemented yet, right? And you know that these rules only apply to ISP's, right?

You should change your title. They aren't going to LET anyone do anything. They can already do it. They're just keeping the status quo.

The feds might think I'm a little warped sexually, but other than that, let them see it. Nothing to hide

Except if they didn't vote, the rules do go into effect. I'll leave the title as I copied it from Huff Po. And aren't you NOT talking to me...or that doesn't apply when you think you can correct me on something?

Pretty clear that I addressed Huff Po's bias and tendency for the dramatic in the first post.

Piece of advice, stop telling people about your ability and willingness to have intelligent thoughtful discussions, since you can't seem to go more than 1 post without succumbing to the need to insult people. TIA.

Not dodging sh*t. Never done that here. Just sick of certain people around here muddling up discussions. I have better things to do with my time. More than willing to have intelligent thoughtful discussions, but only if it's in a productive format. I don't find it productive to lump a bunch of different points in to one post. That's why I very specifically segregated yours, so we could have a discussion about both of them individually. If you want to discuss specific points put one in a post so there's no confusion. It's sad that when you libs don't like someone's response they simply resort to calling names.

Why the fock isn't this getting more play?

People on the right think if you're not doing anything wrong you don't have anything to hide.

People on the left see this has nothing to do with putting a man in the womens restroom so they don't care.

Multiple threads on surveillance say otherwise.

Your garbage man knows more about your life than the NSA if they choose to do so.

First thing I learned as a PI, people are creatures of habit. The majority of us live and work within a small radius. We live, work, and raise. Shop and manaveur included. Our internet habits are second. I can find out more about you faster than the web in your trash can.

bring openess and accountabililty to the big bad government was worth it.
