How can famous artwork ever be stolen? Let's say I steal the Mona Lisa, what am I going to do, hang it on my wall? Anyone I have over will be like "wait a second, that's the Mona Lisa, which I read was just stolen! Hold on while I call the cops." I guess it could be continuously sold on the black market, but how could there ever be an "end user"? Would it be like a Mexican drug kingpin who lives in some hidden mansion/fortress, where anyone who would be allowed in there already knows the deal? Still seems kind of empty. <_<

Just paint over it so no one will know.

Anyone who sees your stolen Mona Lisa will just assume it’s a replica. That’s the appeal, knowing it’s the real one when no one else does.
