Life Goals - a thread about vinyl (and albums in general)

07 September 2017 - 03:40 AM

so I'm finishing the basement (in case you haven't been keeping up) and it's building up excitement for the opportunity to create a home theatre in the basement.  Will probably go with Sony tv, receiver, bd player and then a 5-channel cerwin-vega speaker system highlighted with 2 12" floorstanding speakers

In addition, I believe I'm going to add a record player to the mix and start collecting vinyl.  So literally starting my album collection all over again from scratch.  So my question is, if you were to start your album collection all over again, which albums would you start with?

The answer for me was Dr. Dre, The Chronic.  I know this because I was at Best Buy the other day and bought it.  For me, it had to do with being around 13 or 14 up in my friend's room, listening to it on Pioneer 12"s knowing my parents would have blew their sh!t if they knew what I was listening to.  Plus there's the allure that this album is tough to find not being featured on google play and impossible to find the full album on youtube, and the simple fact that this album will sound amazing on the system I am envisioning.

I do have two other vinyl albums; one was a Jack White album they sent when I signed up for something online once, and the other is a newly released Split Lip Rayfield titled On My Way I picked up at a recent show and got the band members to sign.  I'm thinking for a goal to build a list of albums I want and then ranking them 1-5 so that when people want to buy me gifts they have some ideas, and then also as I go to Live shows I may just start making it a habit to pickup a vinyl there.

So recently I was going through and making a target list, and these were the one's that came up as the 4's and 5's for me.  What am I leaving off or not including that should get some consideration?

Alt-J - An Awesome Wave
Beastie Boys - Ill Communication
Glass Animals - ZABA
The Greatful Dead - Workingman's Dead
Jack White - Lazareto (allure being a square album)
Jerry Garcia - The Pizza Tapes
Led Zeppelin - IV
Nirvana - In Utero
Nirvana - Nevermind
Notorious B.I.G. - Ready to Die
Pearl Jam - Vitalogy
Pearl Jam - Vs
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
Pink Floyd - The Wall
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
Radiohead - In Rainbows
Radiohead - OK Computer
Snoop Dogg - Doggystyle
Tom Petty - Wildflowers

There are a lot of great albums out there, but for me these would be some of my top targets...

Cable wiring question

20 August 2017 - 08:41 AM

I am in the process of finishing our basement. Framing is done, most of the electrical is done, duct work, plumbing and insulation may get done this week and then will be time for a sheet rock party

Got step-dad and uncle helping me who are retired union laborers, but doing absolutely everything ourselves. For a guy that sits behind a desk most of the week, God bless you boys in the trades, I don't envy you

Here's my question: I have 2 TV's to run cabling for and I'm curious if RG6 is good enough for future proofing or if I should think about something else like cat5. Everything will be sheet rocked so going back and fishing wires through walls will be nearly impossible.

I do have my eye on some 4k TV's, as well as a home theater with 5 - channel Cerwin Vega speakers and a powerful Sony receiver. Can't wait to watch some chiefs games and rock some music on that sh-t :headbanger:

Going all out with insulation as well
