People who live in Montana and Alaska have the most state pride, according to a poll by Gallup.

In these two states, 77% of residents said their state was the best or one of the best possible states to live in.

Among the worst places to live in are Illinois, Rhode Island and Mississippi according to residents.

Residents who have a lot of state pride also "generally boast a greater standard of living, higher trust in state government, and less resentment toward the amount they pay in state taxes," according to Gallup.

The poll shows a correlation between positive attitudes and the state's location in a mountainous region with cold weather.

The bottom 10 states show a correlation between negative attitudes and state's location east of the Mississippi River or bordering it.

Most survey respondents did not say their state was the single best place to live, preferring instead to say it was "one of the best."

Texans were most likely to say their state was the very best place to live.

Gallup conducted the poll from June to December 2013 and interviewed at least 600 residents in each state.

I've lived in two of them. Alaska and Colorado absolutely do belong. Fock maybe I should've stayed in Alaska. But no, the winters are just too g0ddamned long.

 

I'm a little surprised New Mexico scores so poorly. I think it's actually a pretty nice state aside from not having a significant body of water outside of the Rio Grande.

I'm sure it's still poor in many areas, but last time I was in the Albuquerque/Santa Fe area, I was struck by the number of luxury vehicles I saw. A huge increase from even just a few years prior.

I have heard a lot of good things about Raleigh.

 

I actually suggested to my wife that we should take a look at that city and some other up and coming places like Nashville and Oklahoma City.

I lived in 3 different cities in Wyoming: Sheridan, Gillette, and Powell.

 

Sheridan was one of the top cities in the country. It is nestled against the rocky mountains, it is green year round, and has normal people that live there.

 

Gillette and Powell were ugly, flat, and full of rednecks.

 

 

 

There is a large variation in wyoming, it has some of the nicest places in the country and it also has some of the worst.

Great fishing though, Shoshone river below the dams, alkali Creek in ralston, and bitter Creek in Garland are all fun little fisheries.

I do not agree that Michigan should be on the worst list. We have issues with some of our bigger shitty cities but the small towns here are fantastic. We have Michigan state and The U. We have all 4 clearly defined seasons and our weather is pretty good. We have no hurricanes,few tornados and very few earthquakes you feel. It snows....and it is cold during our winters but that is not a bad thing. You find things to do in the winter.
