Bears | Team agrees to terms with Griese

Tue, 21 Mar 2006 18:06:56 -0800

John Mullin and K.C. Johnson, of the Chicago Tribune, report the Chicago Bears have agreed to a five-year contract with free agent QB Brian Griese (Buccaneers), according to a source close to the player. Financial details weren't yet immediately available. Griese is expected to supplant QB Kyle Orton as QB Rex Grossman's primary backup.

5 years seems like a long contract for someone who's coming in to be a backup. :shocking:

Does sound curiosly like Griese is there to start sooner than later.

Great pickup for the Bears.

I still like Grossman, but if he falters going into next season I think they will be really quick to pull the trigger and put Griese in.

Good pickup.

Until Grossman proves he can start 8 games (much less 16), the Bears need to ensure they have a solid/experienced backup at quarterback.

I iamgine the contract is heavily backloaded or loaded with incentives for him if he starts an X amount of games or something to that effect.

I think this was a great signing. For the past couple of years, everyone knows the Bears' QB situation was terrible. Now, it becomes solid.

Just hope Orton doesn't "learn" too much from Griese since we already knows he likes the sauce.

Bears | More on Griese's contract

Tue, 21 Mar 2006 21:18:50 -0800

The Chicago Tribune reports Chicago Bears QB Brian Griese's contract is worth $6 million in the first year, including a $5 million signing bonus, and contains incentives based on playing time that escalate the value if he becomes the starter. "This is a deal designed to have him in Chicago," said his agent, Ralph Cindrich.

Good pickup. QB depth for the Bears is obviously a need. With grossman's injury history and Orton perhaps not being ready to step in, this is a nice insurance pickup.

Priorities now:

1. Sign Briggs long term

2. Improve WR/TE situation and depth

3. CB depth

4. Youth at G or T

$6 mill the first year??!!!

man, the lions got BOTH kitna and mccown for that combined.

yikes...

but it's all moot if they don't address that aging o-line

Really given Griese's proven record as nothing more than BU material, this is a non-event.

bingo...not a bad signing...I had said if Favre retired he would not be bad to have in case Rodgers sucked bad...but as you said...he is nothing but a backup.

I agree that it is a good pickup but can Grossman or Griese stay healthy for an entire season? The Bucs were 5-1 with Griese last year before he got injured. The Bears will benefit if they make the QB position an open competition instead of handing Grossman the job.

If healthy griese will be the starter

Grossman will start as long as he's healthy. Griese is 2A and orton 2B.

Yea that should be right, Grossman should be able to keep griese on the bench. I am little surprised at the cash he is getting the first couple years especially the way orton held down the fort last year as a rookie.

You made the incorrect assumption that the entire signing bonus will be paid up front, and that is not the case. Besides, both Grossman and Orton will be making less than $1 million COMBINED this season.

The only 2 aging components of the offensive line are Ruben Brown and Fred Miller. The Bears locked up both Garza and Metcalf for several years a piece, and whichever one isn't starting will take over for Brown when he's done. The only thing that's needed is a young tackle to take over for Miller.

I know you like to get your digs in when you can, but please limit them to intelligent ones.

Grossman is #1. This just shows that after how many years now the Bears figured out you need a decent starter on your team.

Also shows how bad a move it was, when they moved that #3 pick for Grossman and Haynes. Neither has proven to be worth anything.

I guess the good news is we don't have to worry about them trying to go after Harrington now.

Bears | Grossman has starting role

Wed, 22 Mar 2006 18:25:05 -0800

The Associated Press reports Chicago Bears QB Rex Grossman is the starting quarterback for the Bears. QB Brian Griese hopes to become the team's starting quarterback, but head coach Lovie Smith is sticking with Grossman for now. Smith said, "That's the way we're going to start up our football team, and we'll go from there. It's that way at every position. The person that's at the top of the depth chart knows he has to play a certain way or you give the second guy an opportunity to play. ... It's good to have these type of players at the quarterback position."

Why weren't the Bears involved at all in trying to get Drew Bree's?

I think Grossman, Orton, and Griese have all proven they are average at best.

Bree's could have brought this team to a whole new level.

A FA is going to go where they either want to go or are adequately courted to go to.

Besides, he may not have wanted to get into this kind of mess.

Who is the starter in Chicago?

Grossman until he is injured again or will it be an open competition.

I am really nervous that I might get cut. I am not a very good QB AT ALL. I am glad Brian signed with us cause he is a really nice guy, but I was hoping to make the team again this year. Being an NFL QB is fun and I dont want ot have to sell cars or something like that. Well, its not very fun when Mr. Urlacher ties me to a bench in teh lockerroom and the defensive lineman take turns teabagging me, but otherwise its great.
