mmmmm...beer

So I decided I'm saving my pennies and buying a '66 mustang

Recommended Posts

But not a really fixed up one... I see lots of them out there... where these moterheads get all fancy schmansy with the engine... change the exhaust.. suspension... brakes.... update it all...

then they seem to lose interest and are selling it for 3-5 thouh.... sweet... that's what I'm going for.... I'm practically illiterate when it comes to engines so I want it to be pretty much done internally.... I can do the interior and paint the way I want it.. but I need that uber mechanical stuff taken care of...

But... I have to save up the cash to even do that.... so for now... I'm :bench:

but in a year or two I'll be

So.... late night posting at it's bes.. uhhh.... late night posting in general.

But it's gotta have the V8 289 in it....

And very little rust... nothing rusted through..

That would be sweet. I've always been fond of the '67/'68s, but googled '66 pics, nice

Uhhhh ... bump!

Since the fast and the furious, you can't find a fastback of any year cheap ... I think the 65 and 66 Shelby's (or modern clones) look cooler anyway, and it's easier to do. So yeah ... get one, do it ... 8 grand for the beater, 5 grand in parts, 2 grand in paint and you've got a car worth 25 grand. Lotta work though.

From a mechanics point of view, the front ends on the 65-66 are a bieotch to align, and we get upwards of $150.00 to do that...Plus 4 wheel drum brakes = :bandana:

On the other hand, though....They do look pretty cool :(

I know they've become expensive... but I think they're ugly as hell.... I'd love a 'vert but I'll be just as happy with a coupe.

Something about the '66 I dig... I used to own a '67 when I was in high school.... old crappy ass 5 colored car.. just didn't have the cash to fix it up... not really sorry I sold it... but now I'd like a 66...

They're all over craigslist.. I'll just have to wait till I save up enough from my allowance... heh

Ok... so I've been looking for a few weeks now.. and I found this close to home. I think it's pretty hot for the price... and the guys on the mustang forearms say it's a pretty good deal..

I may have to take a loan for it.... we'll see what rates they have. I figure I could get a vehicle for about 4-5k that I'd have to put a hell of a lot of work into... Or..

I could just be happy that this guy worked really really hard and put 8k into this car.... just so he could sell it to me for 6800... I can always change whatever I want.

I'm actually more of a dark blue man myself.... though with a rig like this... I'd wait a few years till this thing may need a new paint job before I changed the color... the guy put some cash into this paintjob... it's pretty nice.. even though I'm not super partial to white...

Dark blue would be sweet too. I agree with you on the white, but with the stripes too...alltogether it works and looks good. Solid white however, would have taken the magic away.

Looks nice. I'd  it in dark red.

Hey beer!!! There is a Mustang for sale down the road. It looks sweet.

Call me. Gary

That's a weak Shelby clone. Never will be a good Shelby clone, unless you made it into a convertible, and that's a PIA. Looks like a lot of paint to maybe cover up some rust too. I'd stay away.

I had a '69 coupe in HS. 3 speed, 250 cu inline 6. I got that car up to 120 once on the way to Mexico. She was such a beater. Factory hood scoop, with the turn signal indicators. I paid $500 for it, in 1986. Sold it for a grand, about 1989. I miss that car.

My brother has an absolutely sick fast 97 convertible. He races it, it's supercharged and he bought this crazy motor for it, he's already destroyed 2 clutches. He runs like 11 second quarter miles right now, but he wants it faster.

maybe instead of having a goal of getting a car you probably don't need and can't afford...

your goal should be to get a better job and buy the car you don't need without problem.

just an observation

I own my Jeep free and clear. Almost just sold it for $6500, but really a bad deal on both sides. I was adding up all I have in it, it's over $4,000 in repairs and upgrades and I paid $4,600 for it a little over a year ago. 1995 Jeep Wrangler is a classic. Last year of the YJ. Rio Grande package, but so much better now than it was in 1995. I'm still not done with it though. May never sell it.

See, Jeep people have no problem putting a Jeep together exactly like they want it, but taking a 60's Mustang, particularly any V8 1960's Mustang (or even a 70) and not restoring it to original condition ... is frowned upon.

My Mom has a 1989 Miata (well, they called it a 1990, but she bought it in 1989 for like $22 grand). Supposed to be the next classic, right? She has taken real good care of it, but painted it an ugly green. Was white (the most sought after color in 1989) with white Enke rims, she painted those too. I think she has like 70k miles on it. It's just about like it was new. Almost perfect ... besides the paint. Quick little car. Been 120 MPH in that car too. Little small for me though. Was fun to have access to one of the first ones in town though.

There's no denying, that design cause a resurgence of the Roadster that we still see today. It's a future classic, like a 1964 1/2 Mustang.

If I get this mustang... I'll probably keep it until I'm old and give it to my son. So in the long run... the stang will be a few bucks a year.

I like my job, but I'll never get rich. Between my wife and I we make in the 80-90 range... so we're comfortable enough.... really... how much money will make you happy Gettin? I know people who make scads more than we do... who are freakin miserable....

We've not much debt besides the house... so a little measly loan of 6800 wouldn't be anything for us... just something else to add to the credit rating

Yeah.. he is trying to copy the shelby look...

I've scoped out the rig pretty decently... and next time around I'll magnet it... for the price it's not a bad deal and I'm pretty sure the guys being straight with me. It's not like I'm looking for a show car... more of a daily/weekend driver. I'm a pretty good judge of character after meeting someone... and I didn't get a dishonest vibe off him at all.

I'd cut off that aftermarket fiberglass valance on the front.... and probably paint her a nice dark blue... Throw on a blue/white pony interior kit... and I've a nice car for me and my son to mess around with when he gets older. That's really all I'm getting it for... a hobby outside of this frickin computer...

Those boreds and such are wasting my life.... heh..

The NICE thing is.. the engine is fixed up.. suspension is redone... disc brakes all around... power steering... So I'd really not have to mess with that.. I'm not very freakin mechanically inclined..

And the other stuff I mentioned... the interior kit the way I want it... the paint... it's not like I'm gonna be chomping at the bit.... I have years to do that stuff... I'm looking at this thing in the long term if I get it I think... something tangible to waste my time on other than the focking cyberworld.

I guess that makes sense. Mention it in the price, that he could have the ground effects. And if he can't prove it as numbers matching ... act like that's really bad, because it is.

FYI. The good 65/66 Shelby clones with a front valance, have the big center opening ... for more cooling to the radiator ... you could buy one for $350, and some fog lights ... make the front end look right, but it's still a coupe. Never look right on the back end.

Yeah but see I really don't want the mods.... I'd like to get rid of the mods and have a standard body..... with the only really thing different is some bigger tires on the back for that nice slanty look.

This was my first vehicle only mine was in Ford Blue.

72 Mustang

Had the Boss 351 engine in it- the sticker package was nearly identical, but the boss stickers were actually in the built into stripe on the side.

Will never forget the day my step dad brought it home. I saved the $ up and he brings home this POS with rusted out wheel wells and I was disgusted. When he told me he had a mustang lined up I was juiced up, but the thing he brought home was not what a kid at the time would really get excited about. THe only saving grace it had was that it was simply untouchable in a race and the interior was perfect.

I ended up buying a new frame and body, since that was a once piece bady stlye back then. Only the fenders and hood were removable. I cherry picked the engine and transferrred the whole electrical package and interior into the new body. Ended up selling it in college after it sat in storage for a few years because I couldn't afford to finish the exterior.

I am a huge mustang fan, but what they've done to the car from 76-2003 was a disgrace. I do like some of the new retro cars thay have if they have the nice ground package and decent rims.

Heh... cops are focking broke... that's the truf.

Dunno why... I honestly believe after being in law enforcement for almost a decade... cops and robbers have the same type of personalities... they've just made different choices in life for the most part.

Not saying that cops have nor morality... nor saying that robbers don't *they have their own code*, it's just... we both have the same mentality alot of the time.. it's weird and hard to explain...

But wait... I have a line on a different mustang... pretty much ALL original 1965... burgandy color.. going to look at it tomorrow.

You know, if the numbers don't all match up anyway that a nice fuel injected 5.0 or 4.6 will be just as valuable as that carbed 289 while getting a whole lot more power and better gas mileage right? That and they are mated up to 5 and 6 speed manuals a lot of the time, you knew that right? That and there is an old saying that still holds true: Mopar or no Car. Seriously, it sounds like you aren't getting this as an investment, get some nice improvements on it when you buy it, it won't cost as much as you think. Things like fuel injection, electronic ignition and overdrive transmission will make the car A) a lot more fun 2) need a lot less maintenance III) more streetable. These investments don't hold their value and you can get $30K of work for 9-12K if you shop around.

Trust me, I have learned the hard way, if you save the money and get the lesser car you are just going to sink in more than a nice car in over the next few years.

Yeah... I was feelin ya about the mod'ed stang...

I have a line on this other mustang....

My brother called me tonight. He said that his buddy knows of a guy who has a mustang for sale and he gave me a number.

I call and talk to an old man. This mustang is original color (vintage burgundy) .. original interior (he said beige, but I'm assuming parchment)... original engine (rebuilt around 1000 miles ago), original trans (rebuilt with engine)... sounds like original everything.. it's got 140226 miles on it. All gauges and lights work.

The vehicle was garaged for 20 years... and hasn't been driven daily in quite a while... years.... the guy said he does go start it every few weeks and rolls it back and forth, but it hasn't had tags on it in quite awhile.

VIN: 6R07A <-- nice

The old man is the his wife's second husband. Well apparently the 1st husband who passed away was the original purchaser for the wife. So... esentially it's original owner.

Had a fender bender when the owners daughter slid off the road a few years back and they had to replace the left front fender.. but had it all done professionally.

This may be more my style than the '66 that has been mod'ed. I'm going to take a look at it tomorrow and I'll take a pile of pics and post them...
