NFL Draft Weekend Team Thread: Dallas Cowboys

Recommended Posts

Except McNeill just went off the board to San Diego. I'm kind of hoping for Eric Winston now at our pick, assuming Minnesota and GB don't pick him.

I agree. I'm guessing that's ammo to help move back into the 4th.

Minnesota has to be looking QB I would think.

EDITED to ADD:

Green Bay went OT earlier in the round. Winston is assured.

Gonna play two TE's with Witten?

I don't get it.

It wasn't a terrible pick per say for draft value, but not sure what they're thinking unless they don't expect to bring Witten back to the fold next year. I would've rather had Eric Winston or Ko Simpson here instead.

Dallas isn't in bad shape here. I'm looking at this from the standpoint that maybe they think they won't be able to resign Witten next year, thus in case, get this guy Fasano, who had a great year at Notre Dame last season.

Yeah, an OT or S would've been nice.

Here's another thought. Maybe Dallas can move the 3rd-rounder and one of those 6th- or 7th-rounder in the Jets' trade to move up and grab one of these other guys at OT or S. We'll see.

Per DallasCowboys.com, Dallas plans to use the extra 6th- and 7th-rounders from the Jets to move up. Most likely to recoup 4th rounder dealt in Chris Canty deal last year.

Also, I get the feeling the reason they didn't go for Eric Winston here is the fear of being burnt like they were two years ago on OL so early in the draft.

Dallas Cowboys radio just interviewed Jones. Jones says they are planning on running a two tight end set next year so they don't have to compromise their running game on third downs. This will also leave Witten on his strong side.

Makes sense. I just don't see this as being a team that has the luxury of using premium draft selections on filling future needs. TO is a ticking time bomb. I was hoping that everything was being set up to make a run this year.

I have very little faith in Fabini at RT. We've already been down the path of an injured ex-Jet O-Lineman who was a "Parcells Guy" with Ryan Young. I would love to be wrong about it, but to me RT is a position where there is no starter today.

A second round pick needs to be a starter, and I don't that being the case here.

Jason Witten

Ryan Hannam

Sean Ryan

Brett Pierce

Tony Curtis

and now, Anthony Fasano.

If 2 starting TEs was so important, Dan Campbell should have been re-signed.

I certainly hope Jerry isn't gun shy about making selections at a certain position in a certain round because of busted picks in the past...

Very disappointed in drafting a TE. I just don't see how that can be justified at this point. Any ideas on where they go now? OL? WR? That's what I'd like to see.

No point in going WR until tomorrow, if at all. There's no value there. I still think they might go OL or S in Round 3 and there is value there, as of now.

I don't mind the TE pick so much. If they use him to help protect, maybe set him up there to double-block with Fabini.

More from the interview:

Fasano will play on TO's side and Witten will be matched with Terry Glenn. The fullback will be used very infrequently. Reading Jones' comments it sounded as if they are leaning toward the O-Line in the third round (but he talks in riddles so who knows). Apparantly a number of guys they were targeting are still on the board...

I'll admit I know nothing about Fasaso. Why let Jason Campbell go and then draft this kid? Is it a matter of just trying to get someone younger, better catching ability? Why sign Ryan Hannam then? I'm just trying to figure this out.

their explanation was they wanted two weapons. jason campbell is a blocking te. hannam was a safety net in case they didn't get a te in the draft.

Fasano was a wasted 2nd round pick. The last thing Dallas needs on their roster is another TE. This pick is the dumbest pick yet in the Parcells era.

So who else on the roster would you choose to be the 2nd TE in a 2 TE set? All of the other TEs are blockers.

I think Fasano is a bit of a reach, but he will work out.

Nowhere near the worst pick. Consider the two OL we drafted two years ago. They worked out REALLLLLLLLL WELLLLLL. Keep in mind, Jason Witten could be gone in '07, as well.

OK, here we go. All of those guys are still left with just Cincinnati to pick. Not sure why they are all falling but I would still like one of these three: FS Ko Simpson, DT Gabe Watson, OT Jonathan Scott.

Agreed. Rogers and Peterman didn't work out. I don't see how anyone can say Fasano is a worse pick than those two wastes of roster space.

It's just really, really frustrating because I didn't think TE was a need at all. This kid may work out and be great news, although I hope that doesn't mean we're not gonna make the effort to resign Witten. I just think we had greater needs than at TE right now.

Interested to see where we go here at 92. Jason Hatcher DE. I don't know anything about him. Has Ko Simpson been taken?

Dallas drafted those OL guys because they needed major help on their OL. Dallas did not need major help at the TE position so Fasano is more of a wasted pick. Will Fasano be any better at TE than Rogers and Peterman are at OL, who knows?

Hatcher is a player that nothing was known about when grading started on Grambling, but based on his measureables, he warranted a close look and it only took him a few plays before he made a very big hit on the quarterback to grab attention. He is somewhat of a "teweener" in that he is 6-foot-6 and 280-plus pounds, which is excellent for a strong-side defensive end, but he lacks the explosiveness and burst to threaten the corner as a speed/edge rusher, which is why about half the teams are looking at him as a defensive end and half as a defensive tackle. His tendency to play upright and without leverage so often is what hinders his play at defensive tackle. Overall, Hatcher has the ability to become a good starting strong-side defensive end for a team that plays a 4-3 defense or a defensive end for a team that plays the 3-4 defense. He is a raw, developmental prospect that will need a season to improve his play with leverage and become more consistently aggressive with his hands vs. blocks in order to play up to his natural strength, but he should develop into this player if he goes to a team that is patient with him and gives him time to develop. He will most likely need to go to NFL Europe in 2007 to gain playing experience to become the good starting defensive lineman he will eventually be.

Not sure about this. We'll see; I guess it depends on how he develops and learns.

Here's to hoping that the other 3 are still around when Dallas picks again. :wall:

Rivals.com has Hatcher listed at 6-foot-8 and 270 lbs.

Not bad at all. Last to first.

Hatcher is going to be a run stopper. Maybe a bit small, but stong at the point once he learns the position. He should play some snaps this year, and be fully in the rotation next, eventually replacing Ellis. This could be a Leon Lett type project.

Fasano is a good value pick, and is NOT a waste. Tony Gonzalez has Jason Dunn to compliment him. Fasano will never be the downfield threat that Witten is, but Witten will never be a great blocker. With Campbell gone, they needed a blocker, and Fasano will do both. He's also a Tough nut and durable, and Parcells looks hard for both. The Cowboys seem to have targeted him, in fact, considering the trade.

Parcells has to be delighted Carpenter was still on the board when Dallas came up. The family connection is big in this pick. I was always a bit leary of the Wimberly/Lawson talk for the Cowboys. Carpenter is much more the normal strong side OLB for the 3-4. This does not bode well for Kevin Burnett, who seems to have dropped off the face of the Earth.
