NFL Draft Weekend Team Thread: Detroit Lions

Recommended Posts

You are going to tell me that this guy was next on the list? We are desparate for OL and there weren't any left after Justice? Kitna and McCown won't have any more of a chance than Harrington.

they were also desperate for safety help. you can't fill every hole on the team in one day of drafting. there simply aren't enough picks. bullocks is a great pick.

i think they'll most likely go o-line in the third, which would make their comments about addressing secondary, lb, and o-line on day 1 to be pretty accurate.

I think there will be a better OL left in the 3rd then a CB or a Saftey so yes it was next on the list once Justice went off the board.

Still a ton of OL left.

Marcus McNeill, 6-8, 336, Auburn

Eric Winston, 6-7, 310, Miami

Daryn Colledge, 6-5, 299, Boise State

Max Jean-Gilles, 6-4, 355, Georgia

Charles Spencer, 6-5, 352, Pittsburgh

Rob Sims, 6-3, 307, Ohio State

Greg Eslinger, 6-3, 292, Minnesota

In the DB-S only Ashton Youboty, 6-0, Simpson and Bing are left and would all be gone by 3rd round.

I like the pick. He is a late first-round talent. A 4.38 time for a safety. A player with this kind of speed can change a game. He was the third safety on the board on draft day. The other 2 went before the Lions picked in the first round. Sure, we need another OL, but I feel the problem with our offense over the last few years was play calling and QB play. I just couldn't understand how a QB fails to hit a RB on a screen. These type of drive-killing plays made the Lions offense look worse than it is.

Spencer or Giles for sure.

Only one of the two remains.

I guess I misread Chester as Spencer - nevermind.

what does everybody think about Calhoun? It doesn't make much sense...wasn't max-jean giles still on the board?

Why did the Lions take a RB in the 3rd round? Nothing against Brian Calhoun, but we don't need more RB's, QB's or WR's right now!! We need a new offensive line!!

Calhoun is a poor man's Marshall Faulk. Very quick and a good receiver. Watched him for a couple years here at CU before he transfered to Wisconsin. I was really sorry to see him go, I liked him a lot. Got even better when given the full load at Wisconsin. He split time here at CU.

I love Calhoun, Martz probably wanted him here beause of his Faulk like abilties. I really wonder what the future for KJ is.

i'm not sure of what was on the board as far other o-lineman, but i'm not a gilles fan. at this point in the draft a lot of us recognize his name and understand the lions need to upgrade the o-line, but gilles is lazy and has a weight problem. you'd think lion fans would remember the likes of gibson and mcdougal.

kiper compared calhoun to tiki barber. i think initially, he's part of the equation--a situational player. he has shifty moves and great hands. not sure it means anything other than that for right now.

Congrats on the Calhoun pick.

The kid is a gamer. Plays hard...runs hard...catches the ball well...as others said...a poor man's Marshall Faulk. should be fast on that surface in Detroit.

Calhoun is a tremendous fit for Martz's offense. I still think KJ has great upside, but he needs to get his head screwed on straight and stay healthy. It hurts his fantasy value, but I don't think it changes his real postion as the primary runner. Calhoun should primarily be a third down back and even split out in some 4-WR packages.

sho, gotta give props to the packers draft so far. loved the hodge pick in particular. your linebacker corps is shaping up nicely.

Yup...little bit of a reach on Colledge...and Jennings too a bit...but overall filling some needs.

I like that they have Colledge and now Spitz to work out at guard....the LBs are definately going to be strong with Barnett, Hawk, Hodge, Taylor...and so on.

I suspect they will go another WR before it is over...DE and DBs to come pretty heavy too.

i saw colledge's name mentioned in detroit circles at one point...not sure if he was considered a reach or not where the packers got him. probably about right. i think at this point in the draft players are routinely had at +/- a full round or so of where their draft values have been computed by the kipers of the world.

so when do the lions trade joey? it'd be nice to ditch him for a 4th tomorrow morning, but alas that's probably a pipe dream.

I really like the Calhoun pick...maybe it will push KJ some.

I found this quote on Ernie Sims todday...i like it

"People talk about my height and everything, but when I tackle a person they don't ask me how tall I am," Sims said.

marinelli promised the lions would draft football players. they did that in day 1. sims and bullocks will bust their azzes from day 1 and have take-no-prisoners-attitudes. there isn't any of these guys that's a worry as far as drive and determination.

good finally OL, any scouting report on Scott?

per NFL.com:

SUMMARY

Scott was an extremely frustrating player to grade because despite his natural size and athleticism, his man ends up involved in and making way too many plays. For a 6-foot-6 offensive tackle, he has surprisingly quick feet, and when he bends his knees, blocks with a wide base and uses his hands/arms to his advantage, he can jolt and control his man on the line of scrimmage consistently. He has the natural strength to be a force at the point of attack when he plays aggressively, pushing the defensive end down the line of scrimmage and standing up bull rushers in their tracks. He can get through to the second level to seal block linebackers quickly and has the speed to pull and lead block on outside runs. He has a bad habit of getting to the man and delivering a good initial blow, but tends to stop his feet after making contact and ends up leaning and reaching to maintain contact and eventually falling off the block. In pass protection, he does not consistently move his feet to adjust and often tries to just reach and push his man, leading to him getting beaten too often. Overall, Scott has the talent to be a very good starting tackle in the NFL, but in order to become the player he is capable of, he needs to use better technique, must block more aggressively and needs to stay after and finish his blocks. In the end, Scott may never develop into the player he is capable of and will always frustrate his coaches with his inconsistent play.

Pros:Scott is a quick pass blocker and displays the footwork to slide well. In pass protection, he rarely has been bull-rushed and protects the outside very well using his long wingspan and strong hands to force rushers wide. He bends his knees well and has the flexibility to adjust to secondary moves. He has a huge, bulky frame with very long arms and displays power, agility and quick hands. He could easily start at right tackle early in the NFL. He has a strong lower body and he shows good movement at the point of contact with the strong leg drive. At the Senior Bowl, he showed pass protection skills and the ability to force rushers wide of the pocket.

Cons:At times he will be beaten off the edge by speed rushers, but graded out better in pass protection than as a drive blocker. He needs to flash better pop at the point of contact as well as finish stronger. He can get a powerful push at times, but he needs to show consistency in that area. He could show more nastiness and finish stronger. He will play high at times, which negates his power and athletic ability.

Numbers:At the Combine he ran the 40-yard dash in 5.35 seconds with a 24.5” vertical jump and an 8’5” broad jump.

Skinny: Some inconsistencies have hindered his final grade and likely put him behind the top four or five tackles. He starts a second tier of tackles in this deep class. He will probably go in the first 75 selections and is a good mid-first day pick with the Texans and Bills interested.

scott's a good pick at this point in the draft. frank coyle said he could have gone in the 3rd. fills a need and is a good quality for round 5.

A couple months ago people were saying he could of been the second tackle taken after D'Brick.

matua was a nice value in the 7th. nfl.com had him gone by the 4th.

overall, the lions got good value all weekend. not as many picks as some teams, but they made each of the picks count. you can definitely see marinelli's fingerprints all over this draft.

so....is DeMulling really our starting RG again :P

don't forget the lions signed about a bazillion guards in free agency (tucker types). they'll be some competition there this summer.

defense is looking solid. shaun cody will becoming into his own this year, and sims and bullocks just got added to shaun rogers, bly, hall, lehman, boss. health is an issue. but i like the overall unit. not too shabby.

i really like the 2 late round lineman... scott is inconsistant, but great value for a 5th rounder.... I thought he would have gone a lot higher... and matua was listed as one of the best values left for the second day by ESPN, so to get him in the 7th makes me very happy....

So adding solidly to the D in the first day, and then picking up the OL in the second day... I grade it out a B overall... maybe a B+.... hit a lot of the need... really like bullocks and sims... hope they pan out...

Calhoun is the lone question mark... he was solid at Wisky.... not really sure what they have planned for him... if he pushes KJ and the other RBs though, that can only be seen as a good thing... think he could be a good change of pace back... would love it if it puts a chip on KJ's shoulder...

Henderson should be pretty dang happy with the draft, and Martz already had his offense put together....

I have to admit I am excited... if we can get a solid OLine together, and I think we should be able to with all the competition we have there plus our draft picks, then we could push to get over the .500 mark IMO...

Thought the same about Calhoun, but Killer's blog on mlive says that Pinner isn't happy with his role, has been skipping work-outs, and that the team was shopping him during the draft.

calhoun has great hands (100 passes the past two years) and is a perfect fit for martz's offense. they were talking in detroit media today of him lining up in the slot on certain plays and both he and kj being in the game at the same time. plus, he's good insurance for kj. i thought it was a very solid pick where they got him.

all 3 day one picks should be significant contributors this year.
