torridjoe 48 Posted April 29, 2006 Well, OK, it's pretty obvious--Pujols. But who's right behind him? Would you believe Jason Giambi? 8 HR 24 RBI .330 AVG .545 OBP .800 SLG 23 BB that's 1 HR every 7 AB.
Thin Spirit 0 Posted April 29, 2006 Uh... Would you believe Vernon Wells? 9 HR 27 RBI .400 AVG .443 OBP .767 SLG 3 SB
torridjoe 48 Posted April 29, 2006 Uh... Would you believe Vernon Wells? 9 HR 27 RBI .400 AVG .443 OBP .767 SLG 3 SB great, but clearly not as good. He's got 50 more AB than Giambi.

What about I think it was Mench hitting his 7th straight home run in as many games!

What about I think it was Mench hitting his 7th straight home run in as many games! They're totally different. Giambi is getting on base 100 points better, and slugging 40 points better. I don't get the steroid comment at all--surely you don't think he's STILL juicing. HR's are indeed overrated...but OBP isn't, and he leads the league in OBP. What's definitely overrated is BA. Since a players batting average accounts for 75%-80% of the obp, you cannot say that an obp is significantly more relevant than a players average.

BA only accounts for 75-80% of OBP, whereas OBP accounts for 100% of OBP. See how it's better?

You missed the word significantly. My point is you can't say batting average is overrated then say obp is underrated because batting average is what makes up 75-80% of obp. See how that's impossible? Batting average is a good measurement of a batters hitting. On base percentage is a little better measurement of a batters hitting.
