sawilson 1 Posted May 5, 2006 My dad's been in AA for 30+ years, does a lot of leads. My mom does Al-Anon and they co-lead sometimes. Do you do that yet, or still too new? I do service work at my home group (make the coffee - a VERY important job) I chair some of the sub meetings at my home group I chair meetings every other week at an inpatient facility in Tacoma I assist in an out patient facility in Tacoma once a month for women when the topic is relapse prevention I co-chair meetings at detox facilities occationally in Tacoma Am thinking about co-chairing meetings at local prisons in Tacoma I don't think you are ever too new to help out in any way possible. Sometimes chairing meetings at places like I listed above when you are new helps others in there realize that there is light and everyone struggles, but if you do the right things right, you can survive. I love to see the light in people's eyes when I share my story and what I went through and I talk to them more about it and they believe. They believe that there is hope and if someone like me can stay sober and live a good life, they have a chance to. Nothing better than helping another person. I was helped by many, and if I can help just one person like I"ve been helped, I have served my purpose on this planet. That's my philosophy at least. BTW - been sober 17 months. McBokonon 1 Posted May 5, 2006 I wasn't even born yet during my dad's drinking days, but from what I hear, AA pretty much saved his ass. I'll resort to my normal smartass comments later, but AA really has done a lot of good for people. I went to meetings with them as a kid, and thought they subbed coffee and smokes for beer, but all-in-all, I liked the foxhole-type companionship they had. Giants Fan 85 Posted May 5, 2006 I have an AA father ... and he knows not to try and pressure me to quit drinkin'. I know this is a "sign of an alchoholic" but, I just drink beer. I really can't drink liquor anymore. I don't see a reason for it. I know I have a bing problem, but I never drink 2 days in a row. Dad never did say he was sorry to me ... for all the drunken lectures, and I told him I was expecting an apology, but he said he couldn't remember anything to apologize about. I was part of an intervention with him, when I was 15 ... and I think he felt like he hadn't fully developed his self medication yet. I am lucky because I can see it and understand it, and realize I am vulnerable ... and AA has finally done it for my Pops ... he's into it, and thank God for my Step Mom, because she's kept him alive. Not for me. Not yet ... anyway, but AA has done wonders for my Dad. When we found out he was hiding Vodka and taking too many pain pills ... it was time, again. So congrats on that, if it works for you ... stick with it. I'm gonna take another bong hit now. SHHHHHHHHLLUUUUUUUUUURP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (under held breath): Yeah ... shup ...yeah ... COFF COFF COFF ..... this ... COFFF ... is much ... COFF COFF COFF better than drinkin'!

squidfinger 0 Posted May 5, 2006 I've been sober for 8+ years now. AA saved my ass early on, and it's still a part of my life, though not to the same extent (1-2 a week, usually). My one knock on it is that I think it encourages people to insulate themselves from the world and non-AA people, which is necessary initially...but the whole point of it for me was to lead a relatively normal life, which I have been able to do for the past 6 years or so. Things are a helluva lot better Good luck to you!

Things are a helluva lot better Good luck to you! I surround myself with a great group of people, inside and out of AA. The difference today is I get the choice as to whom I want to associate with - it's a choice. I did get rid of some old relationships that weren't healthy and I didn't think ever would be, but I do have some amazing friends outside of AA too. I just get to look at those relationships different today. Thanks!!!
TommyGavin 790 Posted May 5, 2006 I'm happy to hear all of your succesful AA stories but for me, too many of my family and friends have turned into AA zombies. I'm glad for them to realize their problems and get help but every third word out of their mouths starts with A and ends in A. If I hear the history of AA or the importnace of AA in every community or how many languages the AA book is in or how many countries AA is in I think it might drive me to drink (too late I already do that) BUT you get my point. AGAIN - I'm happy for y'all that find solace, sobriety and happiness in it. I too will go back to being a wise a$$ poster.

I don't like them either and most of the time they are very judgemental of others in and out of the program. Those types are every where you go, I just chose to not hang with them a lot - except during meetings.

Giants Fan 85 Posted May 5, 2006 If someone was smart, they would have a AA donut van, with really good coffee, and they'd hit all the AA meetings with donuts and other fresh pastries. Sugar ... yummmmmm! I've honestly thought of joining AA (when I lived in the West Village) ... for the business contacts. There's a very famous .... AA meeting there. Anonymous location, but famous in AA. If I join AA it will be for the right reason. To quit drinking. Beer. No. Seriously. Ok ... prolly not.

Toro 1 Posted May 5, 2006 How do you know you are an alcoholic? I mean, there are so many different standards out there and I am wondering what the tell tale signs are. For example, I never black out. I rarely pass out. But when I drink, it's usually a lot (10 - 12 beers). I know some people who never get super drunk but come home every day and drink a sixer or a bottle of wine. Is it frequentcy or is it volume during the drinking? If you keep the drinking in the appropriate times and it doesn't cause issues with jobs or relationships, could you still be an alcoholic? I don't know. I just like to drink. Sometimes my favorite nights is coming home, cracking some beers and working in the garage or developing some side software projects. My wife rarely drinks and she is sometimes because I will come home and drink some beer. She tells me it's not right to drink alone, but then I tell her "hey, grab a beer then or do you want me to go to the bar?". BTW: I drink maybe 3 nights a week. Fri, Sat, and usually a sixer on Thursday or Weds. Some weeks none. Some weeks more. 36 C.
