The Moz 72 Posted January 12, 2007 Going to buy a watch and decided to treat myself to a nice brand . With a 2000 $$ max these are the grestest choices I have IMO. Just wondering what might be the " geek " watch of choice. Currently thinking of getting this Tag Heuer I saw on Amazon. Npt listed are the low ends casio , timex , etc or ultra high ends rolex , breitling or cartier.

Giants Fan 85 Posted January 12, 2007 With cell phones today ... a watch has become more of a piece of jewelry. I have a Movado SE ... I believe the first model of the SE, with the stainless band and the gold dots. The newer Movado SE's are much thicker. This is a fine, THIN mens watch. I need to have it repaired ... prolly cost me $50. Been lazy about it. Don't trust eBay ... lotta fakes out there. But the Movado SE ... yeah that's a fine watch. Mine is about the same width as the band itself. I picked up mine for like $110 (eBay), but it was an older (like 1993?) model that isn't perfect. A newer Movado SE is like $2,000 and up. Still, mine looks a lot like http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/P/B000...SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg But with a black face, and gold dots. I think it's worth a lot more than $110 ... but I really did my homework. Was searching for months for a good deal on an SE (Sports Edition) Movado. You can find better deals than retail ... but buying one new is not for everyone.

Electric Mayhem 35 Posted January 12, 2007 As much as it pains me and I shudder to think that I actually read a GF post - I did. And he's right (again - major shudders and sweats). A watch nowadays is basically a fashion statement as well as a tax bracket statement. The 'in' watches for my coworkers that want to make it instantly apparant they are loaded are friggin hyuuuje (I could never get away with wearing one like that as I have little bird wrists). My old boss collects watches (among other things) I think he has like 10 or so that he keeps in one of those 'self winding' thingies. I have been debating buying a nice watch for some time, but a number of things keep me from doing so: 1) I have pretty much never worn a watch due to losing a bunch, mainly from taking it off constantly to play sports etc, so I may not even wear it if I got it. 2) I would rather spend the $1-2K on other things 3) I usually dress casually and a nice watch would look silly 4) If I lost it I would be PISSED That said, I may still get one. I have been looking at this one for over a year now shouod I pull the trigger. Since I make a lot of calls to London during the workday I wanted a dual time zone watch, and I don't like metal bands (again, bird wrists). Buuuut... I think I would rather get a new subwoofer that a watch. As for what brand - at that level of watch it's all about looks and status. They will all tell time reliably. Get what you think looks best and 'represents' what you want the best (and has the features you want of course).
cmh6476 1,164 Posted January 12, 2007 Fossil exactly, why waste all that money on a stupid watch
davebg 0 Posted January 12, 2007 I chose Tag. That being said, a few things... First, including Swiss Army in that list is like a game of Where's Waldo...as in, find the watch that doesn't belong. Second, if you do decide to pony up $1-2k for a good watch for special occasions/when you get dressed nice, get one w/metal bands. It's much more formal and looks more classy (what's the point of dropping big money on a watch if it doesn't look like big money to the casual observer?) Finally, unless you wear a suit to work every day, this may be a little over the top. I wear jeans & a T to work, so my Tag pretty much sits at home unless I have a wedding or interview to go to. I was psyched when I got it...in retrospect it was kind of a waste IMO. I get much more use (and compliments) out of my Nixon watch that I wear on a daily basis. ETA: OK, maybe that prev one wasn't my "final" word. Another thing to consider if this will be a watch that you only wear occasionally is the battery. Last spring I took my Tag in to get a link taken out and to get it cleaned and buffed. They opened up my watch and discovered that the battery had started to leak. Luckily they caught it before any damage was done. It was by complete chance that I happend to have a wedding coming up, had lost some weight and needed to take it in for service. If not for that, the watch would likely still be sitting in my drawer and the battery would have rooned the inside of my Tag, costing me mucho dollars to repair. The Moz 72 Posted January 12, 2007 Fossil (Isnt Movado in the ultra expensice range like Rolex?) just askin actually Movados and Raymond Weil are in the 600 - 1000 range for most. Tag , Rado and Omega are like 1000 - 2000 for a decent one. Bvlagari - are like 2K in the really low end.

craphouse rats 0 Posted January 12, 2007 TAG watches are great. I have had the same one for 16 years. The 1000 series, it is not made anymore. I paid 600.00 for it. They back their product real well. I was diving with it and hit it on a rock and the bezel came off. I sent it in to TAG and they sent me a new watch. This was 10 years ago so I don't know how they are now as far as customer service. You can't go wrong with a TAG. You can wear it when dressed up or with casual clothes.

You can't go wrong with a TAG. You can wear it when dressed up or with casual clothes. i had a fake tag that i bought for $5 on the street in NYC. i dropped it on the bathroom floor and the little tag emblem inside came loose and got stuck in between the hand of the watch, stopping them from telling time. i couldn't find the guy i bought it from to get a replacement. Artist Formerly Known as Big O 0 Posted January 12, 2007 Tag Heuer, no doubt. I am not a jewlery guy. I hate having anything on my wrists or hands as I tend to break or damage rings and watches. That being said: I have had mine for 8 years (College grad present) and it has only had 1 battery replacement and no scratches to the crystal. Stainless band and face is easy to keep up, most stores will buff out the scratches Mine "Status" is a bonus if you are in to that sort of thing. Me, I wear it because it was a gift and looks good in the corporate world. At home or bumming around, I typically do not wear jewlery.

davebg 0 Posted January 12, 2007 If you wear a Tag you're a douche, no way around it. Douche. Don't get all p|ssy just b/c Tag doesn't make a children's line to fit your wrists. Patriotsfatboy1 1,433 Posted January 12, 2007 I have a Rado ($1850) that I only wear on special occassions. Most of the time, I wear a Pulsar that cost about $150. I have a couple of Tissot watches but my Frederique Constant is my favorite. Tissot is a nice watch. The only problem is that backwards, it spells, "Toss it"
SigEp316 0 Posted January 12, 2007 I'm a big watch guy...I have a few Tags, Movados, Rolex, Breitling, and Philip Stein. The only one that is a pain in the ass is the Rolex because I don't have a watch winder. If this is going to be your primary watch, it shouldn't matter if you're getting a battery or self-winding. Of the watches you're looking at, I'd suggest a Tag or maybe a cheaper Breitling. I hate my Movado, it's to hard to tell time on the focker and it has no date. you are I think i heard mid 30's and can afford a 25 K watch ? must be nice I guess they aren't 25K I bought my wife a nice mid-size stainless steel datejust w/ white gold bezel for $4500

My Breitling and one of my Tags is also automatic. I was looking for a winder that held 4 watches, they have them but the one's I've seen are obscene in price.
