Post game show - how much credit can we give to God?

Recommended Posts

anyone watch this?

The owner gave all the credit to God, then Dungy answered the "how's it feel to be the 1st african american to win the SB, and Dungy said he was more proud of being the 1st one to win it in a Christain manner...uh, yeah.

First off, weren't there other Christain/Catholic/Protestant/etc HC's who've won before? And 2nd off, who the fock cares if Dungy prays to Buddah or God or worships snakes - what a load of crap.

Just saying.

I am quite confident that when Oprah wins an award, she will give all her thanks and love to Satan.

speaking of which, did you catch the proposal nathan vasher made to oprah through the media last night: "marry me, biatch!"

and he was serious, apparently. hilarity.

I can't wait for the day when it would be acceptable for a coach/player to say, "Frankly, there is no GOD we accomplished this all by ourselves with hard work and determination."

Praise God and give him the glory for without his help in life we would have nothing. :headbanger:

To be honest though it drives me a little batty too. I doubt that God is a Colts fan. But He does give talent, and He does give opportunities. I like it when people acknowledge this in public. Sports and country music are the two places left in our culture where it's still relatively safe to openly love God.

I think talent and opportunities are not given -- they're earned. Not to bash the God-lovin' in sports, but God had nothing to do with what these guys achieved in sports, unless it was just to give them some inspiration to keep on doing what they're doing.

Someone could say this now. It would draw criticism from some to be sure, but it can be said.

As for the statements, Dungy is very consistent with his convictions. I agree that God is not a Colts fan. I believe that God is interested primarily in a relationship with people and also interested in people doing his work. I believe He provides strength, courage, and peace in times of trial and difficulty....but that's about it. I don't think He cares who wins games and who loses. Dungy acknowledged God's role in his life and in the minds of the players, but He didn't say that God wins football games per se. Big difference.

FWIW, his players don't seem to mind that he gives God credit for stuff. They seem to really love him and love playing for him.

I LOOOOOOVE that he said that about it being more important that he and Lovie are Christian. Now, all of the Athiest, ACLU loving waste products can spend this morning getting the serious knot out of their cololective panties. :dunno:

Way to piss off the Commie-Pinkos..... GO Dungy!

I always find it funny when people make it a point to capitalize every "he" when referring to God. I don't think God would mind if you skipped a couple.

I've just done it for a long time....so it's a habit. I do it out of respect, but agree with what you're saying. I'm not worried about skipping it....just a sign of respect, that's all.

I'm amazed that it bothers you so much. Who cares who someone thanks in a moment of joy or after winning an award or anytime? Would it have made you feel better if he had thanked his uncle Tom or his sister Sussy? I don't get it.

Oh sure, you CAN say whatever you want but it wouldn't be "acceptable" by any stretch. If someone said this in today's society, they would be ostracized more than Mel Gibson in Hollywood for his rant against Jews. It would be career suicide!

Career suicide for a politician- yes. For a football coach?- no. If he keeps winning football games, they're not going to fire him just because of his beliefs or lack thereof.

Especially since Irsay brought up God in his post game comments before Dungy ever did.

Funny that God apparently likes the Colts better than the Bears. I didn't think God took sides in NFL games. ;)

I'm not even a Church-goer. I dont even consider myself very religious. My thing is more with the focking obnoxious, pissed off ACLU-loving dooshbags that get angry when employees at stores for saying Merry Christmas. What does it have to with self confidence? Is that a pre-canned ACLU response? Did you pick that out of your handbook?

Just tired of the fact that I'm expected to accept moslem terrorism as a valid religion and have it rammed down my throat or my kids throats at school due to "tolerance" but I cant go to a Shopping Mall and say Merry Christmas...we have to say Happy Holidays.

Dungy had a HUGE audience and I just know it freaked out the PC correct / bedwetting liberal crowd. Thats why I liked it. Nancy Pelosi prolly aged another 10 years with that comment..... hehehehehe

I actually hate the fact that you can't say Merry Christmas anymore as well. PC has run amok and needs to be derailed...fast! But I hate that our government put the words "under God" in the pledge of allegiance and "in God we Trust" on our money even more!!! Even with that, though, I don't believe that those people are "waste products" for doing/saying what they believe to be the "right" thing.

Disclaimer: I don't follow the ACLU and have heard of Pelosi but really don't know who she is or what she does. So...no handbooks here.

Great post. I get a kick out of the "non-religious" even celebrating Christmas. What a contradiction. Anyone that does not believe in God/religion should go about their day on December 25th each year the same as they go about all other day. What is even crazier is the fact that the Government gives their employees December 24th and December 25th off of work as a "holiday". Then the listen to people claim the seperation of state/religion. So backwards. I had a roommate and good friend (no longer a roommate but still a good friend). I respected the fact that December 25th ment nothing to him and he went about his day the same as any other day. That makes sense.

Why comment from a standpoint of ignorance? The guy said what he said. Back up the TiVo, watch it again.

And he distinctly said a "CHRISTAIN" manner. It bothered me because I happen to be of a non-christain faith, and of the personal opinion that if there is a God, he could give a rat's ass about you, me, Dungy or the Colts in general. All Gods creatures are beautiful, eh? So why would the Colts get any more love than the Polar Bears drifting away to extinction on their melting ice caps or the wars being waged around the globe? I'd much rather God cared about preserving his creations than something retared as a football game.

But that's ok - I started this topic with the full expectation that some of you would "get it" and some wouldn't. You clearly fall into the latter catagory. Funny thing about Christains - they'll defend something like this to the ends of the Earth even though Dungy made what could be considered an exclusionary statement. But in this uber PC society, if Dungy had instead said, "and we nearly didn't make it this far because of the Jews!" not one Christain would have blinked an eyelash.

I guess I don't understand what is to get and not to get, so maybe I don't "get it". An individual states how he as an individual feels in a time of joy. I don't think he stated that everyone watching should be Christian, feel as he does, or believe as he does. He purely made a statement directly involving himself and his beliefs. Not sure what more can be taken from the statements.

I like you better in the geek club.

Here's what he said exactly:

"I'm proud to be the first African-American coach to win this," Dungy said during the trophy ceremony. "But again, more than anything, Lovie Smith and I are not only African-American but also Christian coaches, showing you can do it the Lord's way. We're more proud of that."

They're proud of the role God played in their success. What's so sinister about that. You seem to be the one who's overly PC sensitive here. Was he supposed to refer to God in the generic or not mention God at all for fear of offending non Christians?

And there's nothing in his quote to suggest he thinks he was the FIRST Christian coach, or the first to win in a "christian manner." Certainly Joe Gibbs and other salso fit the description. You're reading WAY too much into this.

Praise God - ok, that's pushing it a little, but it's fairly cliche. No, Dungy had to go on a tangent about Christianity.

How you think Muslims felt about that? You do realize that the Superbowl is among the most widely broadcasted television event, right? What if some Muslim sees that, gets offended and uses it as an excuse to blow up a schoolbus. How you feel about Dungy's right to say whatever he wants in a time of joy now?

Ironic that as PC as Christains are, they cannot help but to step on the toes of others when it comes to pimping their religion. I have no problem with Dungy being a man of faith. The issue I take is when people pimp their specific faith as the reason for their success, because it implies that those of other faiths cannot achieve at that level.

Easy. Christmas stopped being about Jesus many years ago. It's become Consumersmas, the most holy holiday of Capitalism.

Saying he won it as a Christain is just as retarded as saying he won it as a black man. He won it because he's a good coach. If he truly believes that being black or christain helped him win this game, then he's an idiot.

If anything he should join the Church of Bob Sanders and Peyton Manning - they're the biggest reasons Dungy has a ring right now.

Funny thing about non-believers...they simply cannot stand hearing a Christian profess his faith.

Your last statement is one of the more idiotic things I have heard you say...because Dungy did not say that...and yes, Christians would have blinked and had something to say had Dungy said something like that about the Jews.

Nice try though...

I think he does believe being a Christian helped him get to that point and gave him his talents to coach that game and win. Not that it had a thing to do with the outcome of the game beyond that...and he said as much.

The issue I take is when people pimp their specific faith as the reason for their success, because it implies that those of other faiths cannot achieve at that level.

I agree, it would be preferable for all to leave their beliefs at home where they belong (or bring it up in church when you go or at a Christian rally or something). But, devout Christians believe it is their duty to "spread" the word and their faith, so....

Funny thing about non-believers...they simply cannot stand hearing a Christian profess his faith.

As would "believers" tire quite quickly if atheists went around professing that there is no God everytime they had a captive audience.

I had a roommate and good friend (no longer a roommate but still a good friend). I respected the fact that December 25th ment nothing to him and he went about his day the same as any other day. That makes sense.

Easy to criticize when you haven't lived it. What would you think of your friend if he happened to fall in love with a Christian woman who insisted that their children had to attend a Christian school, so he acquiesced to her demands?

Easy to do as you would like when only making the choice for yourself, quite another thing when you have to decide with other people for other people.

I kind of stopped reading this response when you mentioned blowing up a school bus. If a simple comment by an individual about his/her personal beleifs led another person to blow up a school bus, I kind of think the individual who blew up the school bus has a lot of "issues". Not sure his/her faith being different then another person's individual faith is the main issue.
