The Departed

I gotta believe that the only reason this movie won best picture is because Marty HAD to win an Oscar at some point. I'm not saying this wasn't a decent flick but it had plenty of flaws and the ending was  . ***spoilers*** there was way too much build up in that movie for everyone to just get shot and die. what happened to the envelope? was the baby leo's? where the FOCK did the second mole come from (lame btw)?? and how the hell didn't jack figure out that leo was the cop?***

anyways, i'm glad that marty won but he SHOULD have won for Good Fellas but whateva...

1) I kind of like the envelope question. Not that it is major, but everything doesn't have to be explained. (think Pulp fiction and the briefcase)

2) The kid was Matt Damon's. It was not Leo's and it is said so in the movie, a few times.

Yes. She told Matt it was his kid. And he said "What about the baby" when she was walking away after Leo's funeral.

the fact that she walked away led me to belive it was Leo's

as for the movie, I thought it was great, a modern day goodfella's, but I saw it before the hype.

first of all, they made it clear that damon had a "hard" time getting it up. later, damon finds out that his girlfriend is pregnant. she never says IT'S YOURS. of course damon thinks it's his but she never tells him she was focking around either.

Not to mention he had "issues" with getting it up. WHich they made it a point to show during the movie. personally, I think he was the gay, but that's another conversation.

the child was 100% leo's

Agreed. It was a down year for movies and they figured Marty was due. The ending killed it for me. It seemed like they went "oops, man this movie is getting focking long" and basically decapitated it. Still a good movie but not great by any stretch.

The envelope obvioulsy contained all the info to ID Damon as a rat and was instructed to be turned over to Wahlberg. Jack did know Leo was a cop, but remember Jack was an undercover rat for the FBI. They were both rats inside a criminal organization- that was their common bond and exactly why Jack took to Leo so quickly IMO.

James "whitey" Bulger , a boston mobster, did the same thing. this is how he stays ahead of the game, he squeels and the cops arrest people making them look good.

The informant

Shortly thereafter, Whitey became partners with Stephen Flemmi, a longtime FBI informant. Although it is a documented fact that Bulger soon followed Flemmi's example, exactly how and why he became an informant remains controversial.

Special Agent John Connolly frequently boasted to his fellow agents about how he had recruited Bulger at a late night beachfront meeting inside Connolly's car. Author Howie Carr writes that Bulger had been an off the books informant since his teenaged years and that, like Flemmi, he had been recruited by Special Agent H. Paul Rico. However, Kevin Weeks—Bulger's surrogate son—considers it more likely that Stephen Flemmi had helped build a Federal case against him. He writes of his belief that Bulger was offered a choice between supplying information and returning to prison.

Whatever the truth, Bulger used his charisma in order to turn his status with the FBI to his own advantage. Special Agent Connolly, who was assigned to monitor him, soon grew to revere Bulger and viewed him like an older brother. According to Federal prosecutors, Connolly became, for all intents and purposes, a member of Bulger's organization, supplying him with information about investigations and even funneling bribes to at least one other agent.

Well obviously he is giving up Italian and Asian gangsters. Like another poster menioned, based on a true story. Look at the frickin sting operation Nicholson pulled off with the Asians. He sold them a bunch of broken light bulbs and knew he had FBI protection.

I liked the departed. Very thrilling and suspenseful. The acting was also top notch although the plot was a little muddled there near the end.

I think it's the kind of movie that needs to be watched twice.

I'd definitely recommend it.

Correct answer. I didnt figure it out until the second time watching. Which made the first time watching it very anticlimactic, now its definately a top notch flick.

It seems like the type of movie that will get better with a second viewing.

I thought it was pretty good. I was especially impressed by all the main actors, and the way they didn't totally botch the Boston accents.

That said, the use of instant messaging to advance the plot line really annoyed the crap out of me. It just smacks of a lack of creativity, IMO.

I like how everyone died in the end for the simple fact I didn't expect it, mainly Leo's character. It challenged the expectation that things go some ideal way when you have some upstanding person really fighting for it. The movie was gritty and that aspect was harsh, it matched. Justice in the form of Whalberg's character knocking Damon off was satisfying (movie wise).

Instant messaging to advance the plot didn't bother me, in real life it would become a good resource. I see how it could be seen cheaply convienent on the director/screen writers part, but personally saw it more as a legit plot advancer but also tension builder.

The movie was good, but there was one huge flaw, in my opinion, that pissed me off. Jack was a known mob boss who the cops/fbi/everyone knew everything about. So, how did they not know Damom was associated with him for years, even met with him at his police academy graduation???? Oh well, anyone else think this?

Yeah, that bothered me a little bit. That and the fact that Sullivan kept calling Costello "Dad" when he talked to him on the phone in public. Doesn't anyone know that his father is supposed to be dead?

While I very much enjoyed the movie it really does illustrate the stupidity of the Academy. Scoresese loses to Eastwood and Million Dollar Baby with the Aviator, a superior film in all aspects.

Then Eastwood loses to The Departed and Scorsese after directing Letters from Iwo Jima, a superior film in all aspects. Buncha of clowns.

I don't think I could possibly agree with you more.

That was my big question about the plot as well.

Otherwise great movie, loved it.

Theatre. Usually it's just special effects heavy movies I'd reccomend the theatre for, but there's something about this one too.

Now I don't know what to do...wife and kids are away, but my pennydoodle has been alone all day long. Not sure if I want to let her have the run of the house for another 2.5+ hours. :D
