football_scooter 0 Posted March 21, 2007 Steal of the draft: The Allman Brothers Band - Eat A Peach 1. Ain't Wastin' Time No More 2. Les Brers In A Minor 3. Melissa 4. Mountain Jam 5. One Way Out 6. Trouble No More 7. Stand Back 8. Blue Sky 9. Little Martha Having firmly established themselves as "The Grateful Dead of the South" via their enormously successful 1971 Live at the Fillmore East double album, the Allman Brothers had just begun work on a new studio collection when slide guitarist Duane Allman died in a motorcycle accident. Undaunted, the group rallied together and completed Eat a Peach, which, via inclusion of the 34-minute-plus "Mountain Jam," blossomed into a double LP. While keyboardist-singer Gregg Allman shone on tracks like Sonny Boy Williamson's "One Way Out" and his own "Melissa," it was second guitarist Dickey Betts who came out from under the departed Allman's shadow with his lead vocal on "Blue Sky" and his incendiary playing throughout. --Billy Altman How does one introduce an album one has had to replace twice before finally getting it on CD? Byu admitting that it provided a constant accompaniment to his life for more than two decades, that he remembers hearing the echoes of "Blue Sky" wafting into the rafters at his wedding reception in an expansive old mansion beloinging to a friend's parents, or that he felt more at home when listening to it on a Sony Walkman in strange motel rooms all over the country when traveling on business? It seems to be a permanent part of my life, like Sgt Pepper or Bookends. This is the album released at the apex of their rise to fame and fortune, a studio album completed after lead singer and slide guitar magician Duane Allman died in a motorcycle accident. This is s spellbindingly good collection of an under appreciated band at their very best. You will find most of the songs included here on their various "best of the Allman Brothers" collections, and for good reason. Whether it is for the matchless "Blue Sky', or for the blockbuster sound of "Ain't Wasting Time No More", this is an album so terrific, you will play it again and again. I especially like their guitar instrumentals. Gregg Allman and Dicky Betts perform absolutely magically here, and it is all captured for your endless amusement and entertainment. Enjoy! Big Blue 06 195 Posted March 21, 2007 Christ. Sorry gents, had to work today. My picks: 4.12 - Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness 5.01 - Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here IMO, the Pink Floyd album is their best. Only 5 songs on the whole CD, but it is absolutely awesome. Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness is vastly underrated IMO. 2 discs and there's hardly a bad song on them. Disc one: Dawn to Dusk"Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness" – 2:52 "Tonight, Tonight" – 4:14 "Jellybelly" – 3:01 "Zero" – 2:41 "Here Is No Why" – 3:45 "Bullet with Butterfly Wings" – 4:18 "To Forgive" – 4:17 "###### You (An Ode To No One)" – 4:51 "Love" – 4:21 "Cupid de Locke" – 2:50 "Galapogos" – 4:47 "Muzzle" – 3:44 "Porcelina of the Vast Oceans" – 9:21 "Take Me Down" – 2:52 [edit] Disc two: Twilight to Starlight "Where Boys Fear to Tread" – 4:22 "Bodies" – 4:12 "Thirty-Three" – 4:10 "In the Arms of Sleep" – 4:12 "1979" – 4:25 "Tales of a Scorched Earth" – 3:46 "Thru the Eyes of Ruby" – 7:38 "Stumbleine" – 2:54 "X.Y.U." – 7:07 "We Only Come Out at Night" – 4:05 "Beautiful" – 4:18 "Lily (My One and Only)" – 3:31 "By Starlight" – 4:48 "Farewell and Goodnight" – 4:22 1. I'm another "Wish You Were Here" fan. How the hell did "Animals" go higher?!? YIKES! There are another half dozen Floyd albums between "Wish You Were Here" and "Animals". And "Animals" is on the wrong side of that half dozen. Two Smashing Pumpkins albums in the first 5 rounds? The album equivalent of David Carr and Wali Lundy. JT 137 Posted March 22, 2007 Personal preference. Personally, I would not take a Pink Floyd album in the first 500 rounds of this draft. The kind of irrational bias that people use to steal productive dallas players from me in ff drafts. Truthfully, nothing much against the Smashing Pumkins. But two before any number of albums by bands I'm not allowed to mention out of respect for your draft rules?
phillybear 366 Posted March 22, 2007 The kind of irrational bias that people use to steal productive dallas players from me in ff drafts. Truthfully, nothing much against the Smashing Pumkins. But two before any number of albums by bands I'm not allowed to mention out of respect for your draft rules? It's a tricky balancing act. Taking some somewhat popular albums that I really like, which I did with my first 3 picks, then finishing off with other albums that I would take with me to a desert island. And get voted on for my efforts. I don't want to simply take best selling, mainstream albums. I wouldn't respect myself for my choices based on popular opinion based on average draft position. And growing up exposed to many different types of rock and music in general, I really dislike most of the dinosaur rock bands. While Led Zep, Beattles, Pink Floyd, Pearl Jam, Guns & Roses sold tons of albums, I would much rather have a Smashing Pumpkins albums. Still popular, sold many millions of albums, yet not as popular as Led Zep.
football_scooter 0 Posted March 22, 2007 another aspect is trying to judge where others will grab what, and how you feel about the dropoff at a given "position". Floyd was my 1.04 pick with Dark Side of the Moon. I felt strongly that it is their best and most popular work. Could I have waited, let someone else take it and grab Animals in the 2nd or 3rd rounds? Absolutely - but I wanted this one so I grabbed for it. Likewise with any artist. There are other albums which will be taken by bands who've already had works selected - it a preference thing and a popularity thing. Wait and see - I have plenty of more obscure picks to flesh out my roster in rounds 7-15 (we are doing 15, right?) - but for now a lot of the selections have to do with who we see that we're drafting with. I had Thriller and Smashing pumpkins on my list, but thought I'd be able to slide on them for a few rounds with all these metal heads and 80s rockers. Little did I know they were diverse as well. Regardless, it's all in fun, so if you don't like it go fock a duck.
Big_Pete 0 Posted March 22, 2007 Garth Brooks - Ropin' The Wind I was gonna do "no fences", but besides BB taking it, Ropin the Wind has more hits on it, and it has WAY less songs that if you had it on a CD, you'd skip over. Half of no fences songs, you'd hit skip on the cd player. Ropin' only has 1 song you'd ever skip over. Much higher quality in my opinion.
