Ignition Technition 0 Posted March 24, 2007 The Altman movie? I saw that recently. It was so-so. I am a massive Altman fan. I love it, its probably the most realistic portrayal of compulsive gambling ever, I much prefer it to crap like Rounders. And George Segal and Elliot Gould are amazing in it. The Scenes in Reno at the end are Priceless. Makes a great double bill with a movie called " Hard Eight"( AKA Sydney)
ArnieBragg 1 Posted March 24, 2007 Yeah Hard Eight is good stuff. I'm slowly making my way thru Altman's films - at times watching his movies seems like a bit of a chore what with his style, dialogue, etc but he has made some good ones!

Ignition Technition 0 Posted March 24, 2007 Yeah Hard Eight is good stuff. I'm slowly making my way thru Altman's films - at times watching his movies seems like a bit of a chore what with his style, dialogue, etc but he has made some good ones! I dont want to sound like a film nerd but I probably will. Watch California Split, or any Altman with HEADPHONES. not your regular dvd set up. You can catch multiple soundtracks, The opening scenes of CS in the poker rooms, you will catch 3 different sets of convos going on at once, its amazing. He was a master at mixing different dialogue tracks at once. It really makes you feel like you are there. Try it with " The Long Goodbye" as well, Another Classic Altman/Gould Collaberation, Its the movie The Coens always say inspired them to make " The Big Lebowski" The way he shoots "The Long Goodbye" is awesome as well, esp the reflection shots within windows... "He used a technique known as "flashing", this was an unpredictable method for eliminating contrast from the negative to give a pastel look to the show and to bring out subtle shadows in the nighttime scenes by exposing the already-exposed negative to more light in the lab during processing. But on "McCabe", it was used in moderation, but on "The Long Goodbye", Altman and Skip Nicholson at Technicolor all worked together to more or less use varying degrees of flashing for the WHOLE picture! It was a big risk, but it paid off - the movie has a look all of it's own. The camera constantly keeps moving in this film and gives a the viewer a great sense of voyeurism and keeps you studying the frame for details" There is soo much to see in his movies that makes multiple viewings worthwhile. Movie NERD mode OFF

Ignition Technition 0 Posted March 24, 2007 Just added to my queue. Thanks. Sounds pretty good - I know the Coens are big fans of Raymond Chandler and that pulpy genre. You seem to have excellent taste in movies, make sure you add "Seconds" to your list as well. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0060955/ A modern remake is supposed to be happening soon, they bought the rights to remake it, with Nicolas Cage instead of Hudson. Its erm shall I say " An Experience" The last 2 minutes will leave you thinking about the movie for weeks. You can bet the remake will suck, watch the Original. Its a Little known classic, and its the best movie of its decade IMHO. Probably the best movie about " Paranoia" ever made. Aronofsky always mentions it as his major influence for " Requiem for a Dream" He said he watched it 30-40 times while making "Requiem"

ADD1CT36 1 Posted April 18, 2007 the movies i saw: 1. Motorcycle Diaries - very good movie. the story was very faithful to the events and reflections of two very influential men. and roderigo de la serna who played granado was brilliant. it was his first acting job ever! 2. The New World - inane piece of tripe. i was so disappointed. not that i was expecting much but it should have been more interesting. it was moody and the pace was slower than a dead worm. 3. The Illusionist - awful accents and the story was a bit predictable. i knew the ending about 1/2 way through and thats rare for me. 4. Hotel Rwanda - absolutely heartbreaking and gut wrenching. i was surprised by nick nolte's performance. it was very moving. don cheadle was perfect in it. 5. Vanity Fair - the end was a terrible change to the original story. completely effed it up in my opinion. 6. Chopper - hilarious in a very twisted way. the interviews with the mark read, the subject of the movie, in the special features section were awesome. you just wouldnt believe someone could be that way until you see it. what a psycho. 7. Find me Guilty - with vin diesel. i was pleasantly surprised by his range. it wasnt half bad. although i got a little tired toward the end. funny story though and most of it based on court transcripts word for word. 8. Sideways - it was decent. i liked how the plot twists like it does. i think paul giamatti is such a great actor. and thomas haden church (aka lowell) was ok too. it did make me want to go to wine country. 9. The Departed - yuck. i wrote about it in another post. so overrated. --- currently in queue Oz: Season 2 (just finished season 1 and it made me want to punch stuff. hard.) Amores Perros Gangs of New York Down in the Valley Lonesome Jim The Devil and Daniel Johnston The Machinist The Painted Veil

Funny, smart writing, well worth the time. i loved TYFS! funny and brought up alot of good "serious" stuff surrounding the debate. the alternate scenes were really good too. aaron eckhart is great in it. but i cant stand katie holmes. she doesnt act ever in anything. she just memorizes lines and spews them out. boooo. i'm adding new york doll. thanks. ArnieBragg 1 Posted June 6, 2007 The Long Goodbye" as well, Another Classic Altman/Gould Collaberation, Its the movie The Coens always say inspired them to make " The Big Lebowski" Just watched The Long Goodbye - it was very enjoyable. Didn't really remind me of an Altman movie but then again I haven't seen all of his 70's flicks. Notably absent is the overlapping dialogue. I can see how the Coens were influenced by this. With the "smart guy" dialogue, Gould walking out with his laundry (which were his whites or "the ringer Dude" in Lebowski ), and Marty saying he shouldn't be out on the eve of Shabbos I may have to visit the public library and check out some Chandler.
