Video- dood gets tased

Oops, guess I shouldn't have thrown that computer.....

Yet that retired police guy did not know why it became a police incident.

Yeah...throwing the computer at the airport is normal, no police needed.

He looks scared before security comes, not just angry. He had never flown before and waited a total of 10 hours for his mom in a foreign country. Interpreter >> taser. But since I wasn't there and to give security the benefit of the doubt that they needed to subdue him, still can't imagine a reason other than overreacting to have tasered him for that long :shocking:

I agree, watching the video now. Seems like unnecessary use of force to me, if they really needed to they could have just kicked his ass

"The following tasing is brought to you by Crest. Smile without worrying about how your teeth look!"

Poor dood. I couldn't imagine what was going through his head...besides the electricity. :headbanger:

Yea that is a lot better vid.

As pissed of as he was after 10 hours, the guy did create a dangerous environment by chucking stuff, at an airport nonetheless. Sounds like he got 2 short bursts with the tazer. I don't think he was getting shocked the whole time. For what it is worth you see people on COPS get tazed a lot longer. The knee in the neck is fairly typical for an uncooperative suspect. My guess is he had a underlying medical condition. Pretty unfortunate that the airport somehow did not have the means to handle the situation sooner. Most likely all from a simple misunderstanding.

Yeah, this is a real shame. A real needless tragedy. The Mom was just heartbroken. I'm not entirely sure this guy was all there. But, then again, stuck for 10 hours in an airport where I DO speak the language would make me a little pixxed off too.

I dunno what the answer is on this whole "Taser" thing. I mean, we freak the fock out if there's even a POSSIBILITY that someone might choke, ingest a molecule of lead, get the runs from possibly tainted food - and we recall the shiit outta all of that stuff. But, the occasional person dies from a Taser? No Big Deal. 156 people have died from Tasers over the past 5 years. That's what? 51 year? Better than 4 a month? - Just seems really inconsistent with the American mindset.

On a related note, seeing how people react when they're tased, I'm really surprised somebody hasn't challenged their use under the "Cruel and Unusual Punishment" clause. From the little bit of research I did, it seems like we may be the only country that allows our cops to use them. Ironic that we told stories of how Saddam used to use a car battery (12 Volts) to shock suspected 'criminals' who never got the benefit of court first, but now we brag about using 50,000 volts on people who haven't even been charged with a crime. - Kind of puts things into a wierd perspective.

I know we're spending a chitload on non-lethal restraint technology. I sure hope something better than the Taser comes along.

You have to look at amperage too.

Those cops are toast. There is absolutely no excuse for that behavior based on what I heard from a couple of security experts interviewed. I mean the guy had no weapon and they were 4 against one.

I also like how the PR guy says that the video only gives one man's view of the situation. Yeah, one clear, hi definition view of the whole thing.

The cops don't know if he has a weapon. All they know is he is agitated and destroying private property. I don't see anyone pat him down. They are most likely trying to when he keeps walking away. That is a big indication of trying to conceal something. For all they know he is on PCP and has a shank in his pocket. Really looks like standard procedure to me.

So they taser him TWICE including once when he's on the ground in severe pain?

May look like standard procedure to you but security experts seem to disagree.

The fact that they lied about him fighting them before the video came out also looks real bad. I still say these cops are toast.

A couple of things...

The 156 people, what percentage is that of the total population of tazed subjects?? I'm pretty sure that over a 5 year period, nationwide, the number of people tazed is pretty high, so that 156 number is actually a very small percentage. Also, of those 156, how many were DIRECTLY attributable to the Taser versus how many were due to other causes somehow LINKED to the subjects being tazed??

As for the 50,000 volts sensationalism, here's some real information on the Taser....linkage

50,000 Volts!!

Yes, it's true that TASERs have "50,000 volts," but media statements that TASERs shoot that voltage into your body are just not

true. Voltage is just the force that moves the electrons along the TASER wires. When you shoot someone with your TASER, the

wires reach out and the probes hit the target. Electricity flows down the wires and into the body. But, often there is no actual

contact between the probes and the skin; maybe clothing got in the way, or maybe the suspect is wearing a heavy coat. The

electrons have to "jump" that gap, and the higher the voltage, the farther they can jump. 50,000 volts gets you about two inches.

If the probe is four inches away, the electrons won't make the leap.

A good analogy is a common garden hose. Turn on the faucet, and water flows out the end of the hose. Stretch a piece of plastic

wrap over the end of the hose, and the water builds up pressure, and when the pressure gets high enough, the water bursts

through, and the pressure inside the hose immediately drops. Fire your TASER, and the energy flows. When it reaches the ends of the probes, it stops. Pressure builds behind it, until the

voltage reaches 50,000 volts. The electrons then make the two inch leap, and the voltage (pressure) drops.

Here's something you probably didn't know: When that voltage hits your body, it's dropped to about 5,000 volts (for the M26

TASER), or 1,200 volts (for the X26). Then as the energy enters your body, it drops even lower, to an almost negligible level.

In fact 50,000 volts means nothing in respect to the incapacitating power of the TASER.

"It's not the voltage that gets you, it's the amps!"

One more quick one. The above statement is true, but actually illustrates the safety of the TASER technology. The amperage

delivered in a hit from an X26 TASER is about 2.1 milliamps. That's 0.0021 amps. A bulb on a string of Christmas tree lights

uses about 1 amp.

We could go on, but we're out of space and time. The fact is that nothing in life is risk free, including TASERs. Everything in life

is a balancing act, a cost-benefit analysis.

The data, from many sources, clearly shows that, while not risk free, the TASER is one of the safest (for both the officer and the

suspect), most reliable, and cost effective options when it's time to forcibly control someone. Do your research, rely on legitimate

sources of information, and make up your own mind

Would you rather that we get into a "knockdown-dragout" fight with the suspect to take him into custody???? If I have to fight with someone, there is a much, much greater chance that they will get hurt while I'm trying to get them controlled and handcuffed. Plus the injury risk to me.

And, FWIW, I've been tased so that I could be certified to carry a Taser. It sux, but the cycle only lasts for 5 seconds and then stops automatically unless the trigger is continuously pulled, at which point the cycle rate slows down after the 5 seconds so that the Taser is not as strong as when initially deployed. And I didn't flop around on the ground like a fish out of water. It locked the muscles in my back up, and hurt like a biatch, but when it was over, it was over.

Oh, and BTW, if I taze you, you ARE going to jail, period. There's absolutely no question about whether or not you're going to be charged with a crime.

Yeah, that's wierd. 'Cause supposedly, the makers of these things don't ship o/s of the US. Dunno. Doesn't much change my overall point though. (Course my math sucked on that one) But still, the whole point (instead of cherry picking) is:

Yet, 156 people DIE over a 5 year period (okay 31 a year, almost 3 a month) and everybody's like  "Meh" :dunno:

Seems a little hypocritical at worst / incongruous at least, no?

Second point is the whole "Cruel and Unusual" deal. Again, we recounted with horror how Saddam used a car battery (12 volts) against guys who hadn't even been tried or convicted, but then we throw 50,000 volts (Marketers Hype - not mine) into a guy who hasn't had ANY Due Process served. - And nobody gets the hypocrisy / incongruity??

Thorough post. Let me respond:

1) Your statement about "what percentage of the population?" That's irrelevant in the context of my post, no? 300 MILLION focking people in this country, 2 get sick from bad peanut butter, toothpaste, spinach - what the fock ever - and we recall the whole kit and kaboodle like it's nuclear material.

2) Most of that didn't make a hell of a lot of sense. It's all based on this dumb-axx premise that the probes don't actually get to touch the body. "From 4 inches away...." (WTF? You ever see a dart levitate in mid-air?) Yet, pretty much every GD case I've seen, people are showing the damn bleeding from the probe marks penetrating their SKIN.

2a) I'm not physcist (can't even spell it!) But to my knowledge, Electricty doesn't just wander off or fade away like a fart in a windstorm. This nonsense that somehow air is a natural transformer than reduces 50KV to 5KV doesn't quite make sense. By this logic, standing next to an outlet should get you some kind of shock. - I'm not going to debate the science, it just doesn't pass the smell test very easily. And bear in mind, it ain't about Media hype, the damn manufacturers BRAG about the 50,000 Volts!

3) That's some bass-ackward, banana republic circular justification, no? If I shoot you, you ARE a criminal, trust me. I decided it. :ninja: That may work in some jerkwater dictatorship, but not so much generally the way we do things in any place with due process and rule of law. :D

The bottom line to me is that if this is standard operation procedure and all OK, then why did the cops lie about what had happened before the video came out and made them out to be the liars they are?

Four well-protected guys surround him and don't feel they have a shot at restraining him without a taser?

The "knee on back of throat" thing isn't kosher either according to security experts. It can result too easily in choking.

But what do security experts know anyway...

Yeah, the fact that they lied about what happened, THEN when the video (they confiscated) became public, they totally changed their story. That's pretty damning.

I don't really care about the 156 who died. With rare exceptions, such as this one, you've got people acting irrationally and resisting arrest. If a cop wants to cuff you put your hands behind your back and STFU. Don't flail around, pretend you have a weapon, and not comply. I don't have sympathy for those who do all those things and then b!tch when bad things happen like a Rodney King beatdown or a tasering. Cops take their life in to their hands everyday, and it's worse today than it was 20 years ago. I have a lot of problems with cops but bad things happening when subduing combative people isn't one of them. Noone intends for people to die from a tasering but these are unfortunate accidents brought on by those who choose not to comply. Nothing more.

I decided it. :ninja: That may work in some jerkwater dictatorship, but not so much generally the way we do things in any place with due process and rule of law. :music_guitarred:

1) I understand where you're coming from with this one, but I would still like to see how many of those are DIRECTLY attributable to the Taser as that does have everything to do with your post. Oh, and as of a few months ago, Taser had NEVER been successfully sued and I haven't seen anything since I was first given that information to change that. If even one death had been directly attributable to the Taser, at least one family would have a basis for a lawsuit (of course that totally discounts the possibility of the subject being a total d0ushe and causing himself to get tazed).

2) There are a lot of instances where the probes don't actually penetrate the subject's clothing. The Taser has to be designed so that it will be effective if the probes get close enough to the skin without actually penetrating, otherwise every bad guy would the planet would soon know that all you have to do to defeat the thing is to wear a heavy jacket. We already have enough problems dealing with the idiots that we have to taze that wear really baggy clothing. Again, this type of thing is a necessity in law enforcement, or the tool would be useless. And there's very little, if any, bleeding from the probes penetrating the skin. Again, I know because I took the probes during certification and didn't bleed at all. Because electricity is passing from the probes to the body, it basically cauterizes the wounds from the probes and prevents any serious bleeding.

2a) Actually, the diffusion of the voltage occurs more often than you think in other areas. It's one of the things that make those plasma balls do what they do. And it is media hype. I just checked the box my Taser came in, nowhere on it does it say anything about 50,000 volts. I just checked the Taser International website (Rink) did a quick browse through all of the press releases issued by the company and look at the marketing pages for both law enforcement and civilian, and nowhere there did I see anything about 50,000 volts. I'm not saying that number has never been put out by the company, but it's FAR from bragging about it. The media has totally latched ahold of that number and run with it.

3) In America we have this neat little thing called "Probable Cause." Before I use my Taser, I have established probable cause that said subject has committed a crime. It's not "Beyond a Reasonable Doubt" nor an absolute, but it is the standard that I must meet to make an arrest. It's not bass-ackward, banana republic justification, it is a standard set by the US Supreme Court and used throughout the land. When I have established Probable Cause and determined an arrest should be made, if you resist that arrest, I am authorized (again supported by the US Supreme Court) to meet that resistance with the next greater level of force. Oh, and I DON'T say anyone is, or is not, a criminal. The FACTS determine that, I'm just the person responsible for looking at those and saying "it looks that way to me." Then, it's up to the courts to make the final determination if that person is or is not a criminal.

Listen, I'm not saying that the Canadians were or were not justified in tasing that guy. I don't have enough information and I certainly won't make that determination simply by watching a short video. If you want to know about that case, request the reports, read what's been written down and watch the video, and then you might have a little better understanding of all of the information needed to make that determination. Videos, particularly from that far away, can miss a lot of things that the officers right there see. It happens. And, I will admit that if they lied about anything prior to the video coming out, that is a major red flag. Just don't rely on the media to provide you the sole information that the cops focked up because you'll only be getting a very narrow portion of the story.

The cops sensationalized the story on their own by lying about what had happened. They're the dumbasses.

Even the right-wing Globe and Mail newspaper is condemning the cops.

They were 4 trained cops against one likely unarmed confused guy who couldn't speak english. They could have surrounded him and restrained him. Do you need four dozen trained cops to reel in a lone baddy without a taser? What are good enough odds? Why did they taser him again when he was on the ground writhing in pain? Couldn't they have jumped him then?

So, if the four cops "jump" on him and the guy ends up with a broken arm because they have to force his arms behind his back to get him handcuffed, that's ok but tazing him to get voluntary compliance isn't??? ;)

You can't use the fact in this specific case that the guy died in upholding or denying the use of the Taser in this situation. NOBODY expected that he would end up dead. And most of the Taser deployments I have seen have been on unarmed subjects. We use the Taser so that we DON'T HAVE TO FIGHT WITH THE BAD GUY. It's safer for him and safer for us. Every fight I get into is an armed confrontation because there is at least one gun there, MINE. It's not easy to fight with someone and protect yourself and your gun while still trying to control him and take him into custody. It's a biatch. And four isn't necessarily any better than two until he's on the ground and the opportunity presents itself to grab a limb and try to subdue him by everyone holding on to a body part.

And if you're armed, you better hope you get tazed 'cuz you just as easily could get shot.

And, again, if they lied that's a major red flag that needs to be looked into. And, I agree, if they did lie, they're dumbasses. But, out of curiosity, what EXACTLY did he die from?? What did the Medical Examiner's report say??? I don't know, but I am curious.

But, Wiff used this story specifically to air a beef about Tasers in general. They prevent far, far more injuries and deaths than they cause.

Don't get me wrong - I think it's better than cops shooting some retard, I'm not opposed to it, I'm just pointing out some observations. Seems really incongrous to me.

Some people are having a really hard time with the whole "compare / contrast" concept, aren't they?
