Pat's and Geno's are tourist traps. No self respecting Philadelphian eats those crappy cheesesteaks. Go to any local pizza place. Odds are they have a much better tasting and a larger portion steak. And don't get cheese wiz on it. American, Provolone, Mozzarella, or just defer to whatever cheese they normally put on it. Cheese wiz is simply horrifying.

HOW TO ORDER A CHEESESTEAK IN PHILLY:

When in Philly, expect your order-taker to have the manners of "The Soup Nazi". Be prepared when you place your order. Cheesesteak shops are not known for their patience and customer service. Act like you know what you're ordering, and don't hesitate while making your choices. Know your order BEFORE you approach the counter, and try and keep special requests to a minimum (but still make sure you get what you want). Ordering a cheesesteak can be traumatic in some places. So make your decisions, and be assertive. Some guys can smell a tourist a mile away. Act like you've been there a million times, talk Philly sports, and say "Yo" a lot to try and blend in with the natives. If the menu is numbered, use the number of your selection. And always specify whether or not you want fried onions by saying "Wit" or "Wit-out", this is the Philly way. If you are at Pat's or Geno's, and you want to try your steak with Cheez Whiz and onions, just say "Whiz, Wit"-- now that's the proper lingo!

 

One word of advice to visitors: Never, and I mean NEVER attend an Eagles game at The Linc wearing the opponents jersey, or you'll be in for a long day. It's okay to come and root for your team, but keep it low key and show respect. "When in Rome, do as the Romans do" applies here. Also, beware of the cheesesteaks they serve at The Linc, as of 2004 they were pathetic. But you're in good shape at Phillies games, they have the real thing out in Ashburn Alley. In all seriousness, Philly natives appear rough on the outside (especially Eagles fans on game day!). But underneath it all, most Philadelphians are friendly and proud of their roots. Philadelphians work hard and play hard. A little respect goes a long way, and you're sure to meet some really good people when you visit the Liberty Town. Just drink Yuengling Lager and eat cheesesteaks... you'll fit right in before you know it! After all, Philadelphia really is The City of Brotherly Love!

I agree - but everyone has to eat there once. No different than hitting Gino's East in Chicago, Legal Seafood in Boston, or Tavern on the Green in New York. Some places you have to go to simply to "check the box". Besides, everyone you know will ask if you ate there.

I have no car. I am still figuring out what the schedule is, but it is looking like Thursday might be the only possbility. I didn't ask for any comedy spots because I didn't know what the schedule was like.

We went walking towards Independence Hall but didn't see any between the convention center and IH. We ended up hitting one of thos street venders. It was OK, but not enough meat to fill the bun. I stopped her before she could put on the cheeze whiz. That just seems wrong. She asked if I wanted mayo, mustard and ketchup. Is that normal?

The unofficial rules are don't get food from vendors, because that food is reheated 15 times in a week. Cheeze whiz is faggity. American cheese is the default cheese, but you can ask for provolone and mozzarella without looking stupid. Mayo only works on a cheese steak hoagie. Mustard and ketchup suck. You could ask for a pizza steak, where you get sauce and cheese on the steak with fried onions.

 

Basically, avoid vendors and Pat's/Geno's. And you will be fine. Unfortunately, you went to a filthy vendor. Most Philadelphians avoid the philthy vendors because of health code violations. Sorry that you fell into their tempting trap.

Last night we just went to an Irish place on Walnut. Decent food and it had Harp beer.

 

Today, I didn't get lunch until 4, so I went to some dive of a pizza place between Walnut and Market for a Steak and Cheese. It was pretty good. I still can't get used to being asked if I want Mayo on my sub.

 

Not sure where to go tonight. My boss has a meeting until at least 7 and our Sales guy lands around now. I left him a message saying I need him to help me set up the booth tonight (which is a lie, but he hates to work).

True 'nuff. Most of my trips to one, or both, of these places has been late night after many beers, I've always thought they were good. Would have one, then walk across the street for one at the other. It is an experience.
