KSB2424 3,173 Posted May 7, 2009 http://jama.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/full/297/11/1216 Manufacture the need. Get people thinking they need this sh!t or they're going to die. Doc scratches a scrip. Pockets a few bucks from Pfizer. And Pfizer's sales increase. Everybody's happy.....well, except for that certain percentage of patients who might have received the same benefits from a placebo....but that's for the Doc to figure out...... When did the debate change from should Pharma be allowed to show commercials to "There should be a rule/law against Pharma giving kickbacks to Docs." Two seperate issues. And this type of relationship isn't just Pharma. You do know how sales and marketing works right?
surferskin 31 Posted May 7, 2009 Also, the American Medical Association needs to get a better web address. JamaAmaAssn.org????

Two seperate issues. And this type of relationship isn't just Pharma. You do know how sales and marketing works right? I think it was sidetracked when both MTSkiBum and I made offhand comments about pharm ads. You then ranted about how unAmerican this would be. You tell me where it went awry. Besides, threads evolve. Either discuss it or don't. It's not like the thread devolved into a flame fest like half the other threads eventually do. The only reason I brought it up is because you seem to think all doctors have their patients' welfare in mind when it comes to prescribing medication: So if there is no need for a drug (for which you are alluding Pharma tries to persuade people) then your doctor should not write you a prescription The link indicates this isn't always the case. And how does this have anything to do with sales and marketing? Talk about tangents.....
Patriotsfatboy1 1,433 Posted May 7, 2009 Does this also apply to tampons and douches? If so, then I might actually consider it.

I agree that there may need to be a clarification/rule/law whatever on monetary kickbacks that Doctors may or may not recieve from Pharma comanies. I'm trying to figure out how that somehow 'proves' or even argues that Pharma should be dis-allowed to market their product via commercials. Are you saying that since only some states have laws on kickbacks that instead of tackling the root problem we should jump to banning commercials? That is what I don't get. Thornton Melon 648 Posted May 7, 2009 Most of this "decency" problem would be avoided if the drug companies weren't required to list all the side effects in their ads. Why the hell do side effects need to be mentioned anyway? Your doctor/pharmacist/pamphlets will tell you that when you get the meds. "Can't get it up? Ask your doctor about Viagra!" There, I just reduced a 30 second ad to 5 seconds, saving both advertising costs and the innocence of 6 year olds everywhere.

That is the "No Lifeguard on Duty" sign so if some teenager jumps the fence and drowns in your pool his parents can't sue you.

VIAGRA SHOULD NOT BE TAKEN IF YOU ARE TAKING NITRATES OR YOUR HEART WILL EXPLODE. I think that's rather important to mention, don't you?

I'm guessing your doctor won't prescribe it to you if you are taking nitrates for chest pain. Sorry, ed.

IGotWorms 4,063 Posted May 7, 2009 OMG....who cares???!!! Maybe we should ban tampon and maxi pad commercials too.....because what if your 4 yo daughter asks you what 'heavy flow' and 'periods' are? Jesus tapdancing Christ we have become a nation of fuckin pansies. It's real simple....when I asked something I didn't need to know, either I got ignored, or told 'It's for grown ups'.
