Why can nobody from high school step right into the NFL?

Recommended Posts

So if you are aware other sports like hockey, basketball, golf, baseball, tennis, etc, etc. have players that have the talent to come right in and start playing. I know the NFL has a rule you have to be 20 or so to play but don't some players that are right out of high school have the immediate talent to compete in the NFL?

Isn't it possible?

You can't in basketball anymore

and it's my understanding you have to be two years removed from high school football... Age doesn't matter

Those sports are not football. They do not require the physical toughness and maturity. The speed and violence in the difference from high school to the NFL is staggering. You would only be getting what could possibly be a good player hurt.

Not to mention the mental aspects. Hockey, basketball, and baseball are all team sports, but they are much more individualistic that football. You need every player on the field to be in sync, or you've got a potential disaster. You can't get by on pure talent as much as in other sports.

Rookies have a very hard time adjusting to the speed of the game, and the team's offensive/defensive scheme. And that's for players who have 3/4 years of college play under their belts. Take a guy who is used to playing against high school players, and throw him up against NFL players? Not a chance.

Well physical maturity is the most obvious reason i guess.

Baseball and basketball you need physical maturity but if you have a skill set such as as jumper, great vision, etc or great eye hand cooridination to hit a ball you can succeed early on.

Football you cant really get away with that as much. Now occassionally you get physical freaks of nature like Lebron, Dwight Howard that physcially can do it....but those are extremely rare.

I think another reason is the uptick in physical violence football has compared to high school ball. Speed upgrades from level to level are drastic enough....but in basketball and football the physical toll isnt nearly as great as in football. The velocity one player hits another is markedly higher in the NFL as to high school in comparison to other sports.

So when you combine a lack of physical maturity and add in a steep upgrade in physical violence on a smaller body.....thats why you get few or no kids that can make the jump like they do in other sports.

You won't have a high school baseball player coming right out and playing in the pros... They would be so overmatched...

Alex Rodriguez? Only 30 something games in the minors before getting the MLB nod.

Strasburg probably to make opening day rotation for the Nationals this coming year...

Bryce Harper to skip the final two years of high school to enter next year's draft?

I seem to remember a scouting report on Peterson coming into college. The author basically said he was one of the only players he'd ever seen coming out of high school that potentially had the natural ability/strength/vision to make it at the pro level.

absolutely not

I'll tell you the biggest reason it doesn't happen in football or why it wouldn't happen even if the rules allowed it.

Individuals don't dominate football like they do in other sports. You can put Lebron James (the basketball player) on an absolutely terrible NBA team, right out of HS, and he can fill it up on a nightly basis. His team would still suck but he would make the All-Star game. If you have the size and the skill in the NBA, you can shine on your own.

Even HS football players who are men amongst boys wouldn't be able to flourish in the NFL without knowing how to play alongside 10 other NFL quality men. Thats where college ball plays a big role. Its not exactly the same, but its a big help in their maturity.

As far as individual sports.. golf, tennis.... there is no comparison. Collegiate level golf and tennis is really no huge benefit when you consider the amount of torunaments world-wide for young players to compete in and probably gain much more valuable experience.
