nikki2200 4 Posted April 28, 2011 Mike, that is an EXCELLENT question. That is pretty much the whole deal. We have an undefined term that was discussed a long time ago in a certain way, and historical precedent has been one foreign born is fine, but who knows. It brings up a relevant discussion that is being quashed due to race, which is ridic. Why do you care where someone's parents were born if the person in question was born in the US and has lived here their entire lives? Why is this even relevant at all? DankNuggs 305 Posted April 28, 2011 Herbert Clark Hoover (August 10, 1874 – October 20, 1964) was the 31st President of the United States (1929–1933). Hoover's mother, Hulda Minthorn Hoover, was born in Norwich, Ontario, Canada, of English and Irish (probably Scots-Irish) descent. if he was born in Canada he would have been disqualified, he was born in Iowa. Sizzle 0 Posted April 28, 2011 There were presidents who had neither a mother OR a father who was a citizen of the United States of America. As a matter of fact there were Presidents who were not even born in the United States of America. Van Buren was the 1st President born in the United States of America and he was the 8th President. Andrew Jackson's parents were immigrants from Ireland. Presidents with one immigrant parent are Thomas Jefferson, whose mother was born in England, James Buchanan and Chester Arthur both of whom had Irish fathers, and Woodrow Wilson and Herbert Hoover whose mothers were born respectively in England and Canada. I wasn't clear. I was referring to there not being a requirement that both parents be natural born citizens. Article 2 in the constitution is quite clear on this subject. Dr.Grimm 0 Posted April 28, 2011 Why can't the Governator be president if he wants to? If the will of the people want him to be why not? The natural-born citizen qualification continues to provide to the political system of the United States a certain level of protection against the influence of foreign nations. In addition to this safeguard, the requirement also secures the ability of the President to make decisions involving domestic and foreign policy that are in the best interests of the United States without an inherent emotional or familial attachment to another nation.

So to sum up...you have an undefinded term(that may have never meant what you claim), precedent that says the exact opposite of your claim (that two parents are needed)...and the 14th amendment that says if you are born in this country you are a citizen...Along with the accedotal evidence that not one person running against him, despite it being well known his Father wasn't a citizen of this country, making an issue of this. Dude, you are rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic.

Dude, you are rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic. And the band plays on. My claim was never that 2 parents were needed, only that the term was natural born, and not simply 'citizen', and there isn't a definition only historical precedent. And people think asking the question is ridiculous. If Obama was a conservative I bet you'd have a different tune. Kind of like all those candlelight vigils protests going on about the wars when bush was pres...How many candlelight vigils with Obama? And Libya got added to the mix. none... Its all politics, when it should just have been a very transparent issue from the begining.

Great point, they passed a resolution making him a natural born citizen, i suppose the defense was that he was born on an army base and thus didn't have any soverign allegience. but still, people should have made a huge stink about it. Maybe they would have if he won.

Voltaire 5,316 Posted April 28, 2011 im not sure you'd get much. Biden is a stiff. Biden would pull our troops out of the global toilets. On most issues I genarally agreed with McCain. It was McCain's horrible foreign policy that kept me on the fence long enough for Sarah Palin to push me off. That with Obama's blatant disregard for balanced budgets has be in a sour mood. As for Biden, I'm not sure on other issues he's any worse than Obama.

Your gyrations will not be forgotten come election time I heard yesterday that Obama spent a shitload of money fighting to keep this under wraps. Hadn't heard this before since I didn't pay much attention to this issue, but if that's the case exactly how did Obama come out on top? At the very least Obama backed down from Trump. It does look a bit weak. Almost Arizona-esque in being forced to show identification... If the goal was to further the advancement of undocumented people, then the strategy should have continued as feet-dragging and villify all who oppose... Obama comes out on top because the birthers are playing the race card for him. Sure, they say they aren't racially motivated, but the more they whine about this in the face of overwhelming evidence, the more it smells like racism. Obama can just sit back and enjoy as they fire up his base.

penultimatestraw 473 Posted April 28, 2011 Saw this on Facebook: The afterbirthers are now demanding to see Obama's Placenta So what is the debate about now? From what I've read, conservatives still dislike Obama, natural born is both explicit and vague, and liberals are poor and/or apologists. Presidential moms are really old, too. Anything I missed? JackARoot 2 Posted April 28, 2011 So Obama won cuz he can play the race card. He didn't play the race card, the birthers are doing it for him. Isn't it interesting that in the thread about "Why won't Obama releas his birth certificate?" thread, Mensa brings up the hair-brained idea of property ownership as a pre-requisite to voting. Think that would disproportionately effect blacks? Mensa's idea has nothing to do with the thread topic, other than it shows his true racist colors.

You right wing conservative dooshbags get confused at that notion that someone can believe that hard work is the way to get ahead in life as well as believe that some who are less fortunate than themselves might benefit from a helping hand.
