I would like to give my girlfriend a pearl necklace

Recommended Posts

Hello.

I would like to give my girlfriend a pearl necklace

Anyone have any experience giving their significant other a pearl necklace?

How much does it usually cost for me to give a quality pearl necklace to my gf?

Is this something I need to discuss with her beforehand to make sure I give her the necklace the way she wants it? Or should I just surprise her and just throw it on her neck with her eyes closed. Maybe when she's sleeping?

But seriously. I just DJed for a good friend's wedding, her parents are pretty well off, he gave me a nice tip at the end (nohomo) and since the gf's bday is coming up, I'm just wondering if anyone had any experience with buying pearl? Anything I need to specifically look for? Any brands that are better than others? TIA

Also...... get small ones. Bigger pearls look like they are for old ladies. a small choker length one is always nice.

Your GF has had more pearl necklaces than Custer had Indians.

Just blow it on her face and move on.

I have purchased some real pearls for the Mrs., but I have no clue if they were that good.

Yes to the smaller size pearl, but no to the choker length. Classic pearls hang just below the neck, usually 18" or 16 depending on how thick her c0ck is. I mean her neck.

mine are lovely and about 20 yrs old. $200ish at the time. Totally worth it. Get a good cleaning solution too so they don't get too pink.

I assume you are looking for white, rather than pink or tahitian? And you can get the strand that can either be worn long, or wrapped around twice for a choker look. I think its called opera length or something.

Two scams to look out for...

Be sure to look around the holes where the string goes through. The usually drill there to hide flaws. It will give you an idea how good the quality is overall.

And if you go colored, look closely at the holes. Often, they sell colored beads and call them pink or tahitian pearls. You will see white on the inside where the hole is drilled.

Or... just look in the paper any Saturday for an estate sell where some old lady died, and go buy her pears.

Thanks, good advice.

I'm guessing white. 18 or 20 inch.

Fock the pearls you idiot. Find out what her birth stone is and go with that. Then the next couple of times out are stuck for what to get her, you can go with the ring (promise), necklace and bracelet. Then use pearls when you are clueless.

Hello.

It is good advice. But she doesn't like her birthstone. She doesn't wear bracelets. I've given her a few necklaces already.

And honestly, I am not really big on buying "promise" rings.

Focking bunch of internet gemologists now are we? My mother is a jewelry designer. I know a little bit about pearls.

There's 3 types of pearls. Natural, cultured, and fake. Natural pearls are of course the most expensive and often sold by reputable shops. You are paying on the quality, size, color. Good pearls are hand knotted in silk between each pearl, a process which by itself takes some time.

Cultured pearls are very much like natural pearls but often have more flaws. Could be Tahitian ... could be Chinese.

I've got this necklace:

For $50 if you want it. It doesn't look as good as the picture. Genuine, cultured pearls. Hand knotted. Black pearls look hot on chicks with dark hair. I just have this one necklace. Found it on the street and was like ... "This is focking real!"

ETA: Here's a tip ... if all the pearls on a strand are the exact same size and perfectly round, they are fake. Chicks know this ... so at least get cultured. Counts as real. Grew in an oyster.

ETA2: The teeth test is 2 fold. A real pearl will feel different when you click it against your tooth than a fake ceramic or glass pearl will ... also you can scrape off the enamel on a fake pearl ... and just kinda scratch a real one, if you bite it.

At $50 a pop, you're going to have to hock a lot of necklaces before you can pay off Fannie Mae. :nono:

Sallie Mae.

Hafta find a lot more in the street, too. I will ebay it soon. Sell it for whatever it sells for. There's so many fakes on eBay though ... they drive the price of real ones down.

I'm sure gfiafp has gotten plenty of "pearl necklaces" hanging out in the meat packing district.

It's more about the presentation than the actual gift. She needs to wake up to you sitting on top of her, furiously jerking it. Then let loose with a verbal 'SPLADOOSH!', or some other sound effect of your choosing, then toss the necklace at her.

I usually go with the Karate Kid soundtrack.......with the track "Youre the best.....around....nothings ever gonna keep ya down!"

Or if im being playful......Yackety Sacks does the trick as well.
