What to Expect From Game of Thrones Season Two: More Direwolves, Dragons and Death!

Recommended Posts

Loved the first 3 books but I think a aFFC, and aDWD were a little overrated. Still I'm a big fan of the series. Hopefully Martin doesn't make us wait for book 6 the way he did for aDwD. HBO did a really nice job with book 1

Season 2 should be fantastic, but ten episode seasons in bullspit. They should be 13 or so.

The ONLY flaw with season 1 was that one of the early episodes (EP 3 or 4?) was basically an information dump - the lead characters pretty much took turns standing around and telling us stories... those stories were ladened with information that viewers needed to know.

I guess they didn't have anough time/episodes to get in all in otherwise and were forced to handle it that way.

Point being, there are too many characters and too much info to squeeze into 10 episodes.

That's the one bad thing...just being 10 episodes long. Before you know it, it's over. Another 3-5 episodes would be cool, but I guess they are sticking with the 10 episode format.

I just rewatched S1

I have read book 1.

I'm telling you that no casual fan (ie watches each ep. once) has a clue who half the characters are. And it gets even more complicated in S2.

I'm glad to hear that their production budget is bigger. I'm glad the show is successful. But they need more episodes each season.

Overrated by who? Most fans were fairly disappointed in both those books I think, especially after the waits involved.

Even at 10 episodes the budget demands are only going to increase. They have just scratched the surface as far as the number of characters and different locales. Armies need to be raised, battles need to be fought, and it's going to be really tough to keep the bar where they set it in season 1. Hopefully HBO recognizes what they have and are willing to keep pouring in the money.

I think the main problem with those two books was with how they split them up. I didn't like how certain characters were missing from AFFC only to have them show up at the beginning of ADWD to double back and repeat the timeline. It favored too much of one storyline and then the other, that left it feeling bulky and weird. I feel if they had be written like the others, they would have been just as good.

My major complaint is that the story just seems to become continually more spread out and complex, with new characters and new places being introduced almost constantly, and nothing ever getting resolved. It reminds me of Lost. I know he still has a couple books to go, but he really needs to start pulling things together. :dunno:

He stated in some interview that I read somewhere (sorry, I don't remember or I would link it) that he is finished introducing new POV characters, as the storylines start to converge.

He also stated that it will be a 2-3yr. wait for The Winds of Winter.

Grrrrrr.

That will P!ss ME OFF!

I'm tired of shows that open and create such great stories and then leave them "unresolved" - then they try to pretend that this failure somehow validates the work as a higher level of art/vision/and creation -they use some lame-ass defense like, "real life isn't nice and tidy, our plots are much more authentic this way" and it's rubbish.

I don't want to say too much more because you haven't read the books TD, but just know that Martin does have a bit of this streak in him. It's a great story, but he can be a frustrating bastage.

I read an interview sometime back with the guy who write the Game of a thrones books and he ripped the writers of Lost for how it ended...so hopefully he brings it for his own work.

I saw that too. I hope he takes his own criticisms to heart. Of course he has an out in that he's going to die before he every comes close to concluding the story. <_<

I'd be interested to hear what you think he has left unanswered, besides some of the bigger plot points, which I've always figured we would have to wait 'til the end for.

PM me please.

Nah, no reason to get too much into it. I feel like too much of the story has just been treading water and not really getting anywhere. You don't agree with me, that's cool.

it's all character driven.

Here are the MAIN unanswered questions from S1:

**note - tons of subplots, I'm just focusing on the main cliff hangers with S1**

1. John Snow / The Wall

what's beyond the wall? are all these stories about Winter and scary monsters true? How crazy and insane does beyond the Wall Get? Is John Snow the next commander of the Watch? Is what's happening beyond the Wall bigger/more important than all the Kings Landing squabbles?

2. Arya / Gendry

do they make it back to Winterfell? Is the kid recognized by anyone as the "true heir"? Does Arya become a bad ass?

3. Tyrion

how does it work out with him as Hand? is he the link that ties everyone together, the one that can broker peace?

4. Lannisters

are they punished? Does Joffrey get a well deserved deathing (i.e. a beating that leads to death). How about his mother? and Jamie? Do the Starks get revenge on the Lannisters?

5. Danaery

OK - so now what? How long until her pets are full grown? Is Ser Jorah a father figure or a romantic interest - i.e. can Jorah replace Kal Drogo? If it's Danaery vs. Starks or Gendry for the throne, who do you root for?

5. Baratheons

Do the brothers band together? Does everyone band together against the rotten Lannisters? Do I even really care about Baratheons at this point - they meant very little in S1 but previews suggest their role will increase.

It's not so much that I disagree, just wondering if there were things I might have overlooked.

TD

I'll just say your questions will eventually be answered.

I don't think things go unresolved as much as just dropped. I won't go into specifics so that I don't spoil anything, but there are times when something seems important and then it just doesn't matter or we never hear about it again.

Martin really needs to edit more. The books are great but there is just too much in there.

too bad they stay so close to the books :( it sucks watching the show knowing exactly what happens.

Dude, don't you think you are spoiling by saying that.

Before I saw Usual Suspects, someone told me there is a huge plot twist, I was looking for it and realized early on it was Spacey who was Kaiser Sose. Movie stunk for me. I think I said it earlier in this thread. People lovvvvvveee knowing something others don't and feel the need to prove it to them, really interesting psychological behavior Ive noticed through my life.

I just finished the book and the show. I was doing them almost simultaneously. I would read 100 pages and see an episode. I had it timed almost perfectly and rarely had the show ruin anything for me.

I am still stunned at what happened to Ned. :shocking:

Outstanding book and outstanding show. Can't wait to start the 2nd book.

My friend had me watch Usual Suspects and he said i'd love it, but he didn't ruin it for me by saying anything else.

Similar to the 1st time he said to pull my pants down and close my eyes, that i'd like it.

I trusted him that time, why not this time?
