still freezing here but i'm tearing up the living room carpet working on my putting!

Ha, I do this way too much too. I promised I would stop, prolly not going to happen. I can't believe the fairways at our place - the winter has been so mild that the grass thinks it is March, already greening up all over the place. We played in shorts y-day. B)

Stuck in freezing New Jersey. I cannot wait to play. Gotta get a 64 degree for my flop shot. I take big swings like Phil and shoot it straight up in the air. It only goes about a foot and serves no purpose but I look cool doing it, so I got that going for me...which is nice.

Any of you guys walk when playing? I normally ride but I have decided I want to start walking. I'm hardly overweight and not something I need to do - just want to. We're lucky in that our course is an old style golf course, very walker friendly. Picked up a new push cart last night, going to give it a whirl this weekend.

p.s. Nice job Nike boys - Tiger and Rory both sent packing after day 1 of the WGC Accenture.

What course are you calling the home course right now?

I haven't walked a course in 15 years. Honestly, I have no interest. I am in pretty good shape, but I hit the gym for my workouts. Golf is about relaxing and having fun. That said, if you want to walk, this is the time to do it.

I'm a member at Diamond Oaks..... Me personally, there's no better way to relax on a golf course than to walk. Before we got here we belonged to Champions Circle - terrible track to walk, so I rode. Ha, but yes, summer may change my mind when it gets here. Our normal standing t-times start at 8:45, so maybe it won't be so bad then, and we have tons and tons of trees and shade.

I finallt broke the 30s last year for nine, and won't be playing this year......sucks. My left arm still has a fracture at the elbow that hasn't healed yet. I think I'm going to set this year out. It really sucks balls, I live less then two minutes walk well in my case hobble time from my course. I can see hole 18 and the driving range from my front porch. Talk about torture!

I usually walk on our Saturday morning rounds. We are not really drinking and are just trying to get some exercise on a very walkable course. I like it. I have a push cart, but I went to just carrying recently. I found that I played a little better and got more exercise. I changed my bag to a very lightweight one.

For the afternoon rounds, I usually ride as I like to drink.

I mostly walk. To me, it's the way the game is supposed to be played. if the course is cart path only or 90 Degree Rule, I get to my ball before the riders do which gives me extra time to size up the next shot or putt. And it's a lot more relaxing.

What kind of pull cart did you get?

I got the one above - and yea, I think walking adds something to it you just can't get riding. Unfortunately too many courses now are not built for walking, or they ban it altogether up front.

Banning walking is BS. There's a course here we used to play before the storm. The greens were nice and they had twenty seven holes. The course has since gone to sh!t and it's mostly played by the old guys who buy monthly passes. We decided to give it another chance last month. We played on a Sunday around twilight time. They charged me thirty dollars to walk that dump..It was thirty five to ride. I understand that they make their money from riders but don't screw walkers. I'll never play there again.

The only thing bad about walking is when it's one hundred and ten degrees with the heat index, your thirsty, and the cart girl is sitting in the A/C because it's to hot.

Definitely, its a different feel walking the length of each hole. Most the courses i play aren't ideal walking courses so the cart is really key. Makes it a breeze. I even bought the cooler attachment to bring along beer on ice.. I considered buying the seat attachment, but being super expensive and bordering on ridiculous I've held off.

Play at one club with a friend that doesn't allow you to bring your own cart. WTF???? Have to rent one of their crappy ones which blows.

The clicgear folds down into a relatively tiny space, has a cover to keep dirt out of your trunk. Light, sturdy and rolls awesome. Umbrella attachment works really well also.

Nice when walking downhill to just let the thing go.

That would be nice. All the courses here are flatter than pancakes. If there is a hill, it was built into the course design. I don't think I could play a really hilly course well but it would make the game more fun.

hilly course can be annoying as fock... i, for one, hate blind tee shots, especially if it is a course that i have not played before.

I played a course in Mississippi that had a bling tee shot once. They had a twenty foot tall periscope so you could see if the fairway was clear. That was a fun hole.

i walk 90% of the time.... and i carry. my bag is a ping hoofer circa 1999. I'd love to get a lighter bag, i just hate how cheaply they are made these days. don't like the nylon material and the strap systems mostly suck.

in terms of pull/push carts, i never liked the three wheelers. some of them are too damn big. Give me the simplest 2 wheel cart (which you can still push if not retarded) . If i have to pull out the front wheel in order to collapse the monstrosity, its not worth it.

There are a few courses where they set up platforms you walk up to see. Blind tee shots are the mark of poor course design

The clicgear front wheel turns 90 degrees and it folds down into a pretty tiny square brick. Slick engineering, YouTube it. Takes well under a minute to set it up or collapse it. So much better than 2 wheel pull carts

I had a big day today. 1st off, with the help of a knee brace, I was able to play pain free.

More importantly, I took some big steps with all these swing changes. Shot an 85 at Cross Timbers. My driver was simply terrible. I couldn't find a fairway to save my life. I somehow hit 6 of 14, but had i not been writing it down, id have sworn i didnt hit more than 3...and even those 6 were lacking in distance.

But my irons were very solid. I found a swing. While I wasn't necessarily knocking down pins, I was making great contact, seeing a nice ball flight, and putting everything on or within chipping distance. I need to square the face a bit better as I was missing right too often, but I felt really good about it.

It was also the best I've felt putting in a few months. The hole looked bigger, and it showed as I managed six one-putts to only one three-putt.

9 pars on the day, which means I was playing well for a large portion of the round. I had a triple (focking hole #3) but otherwise scored really well considering how poorly I was at getting off the tee box. More importantly, today was one of those days that got me fired up. It was fun.

I'm close. If my knee holds up, I think I'll be in the 70's quite a bit this year.

Well all went great, walked 27 both Saturday and Sunday - really enjoyed it. Saturday we played 5 with 3 walkers in the group - never got out of position. In fact, we waited twice on the fourseome with carts ahead of us. I think if you have players who hit it pretty well and are always advancing the ball forward - walking is just as fast, if not faster, than riding 2 to a cart...... Unfortunately my putting and short game sucked ass. This time of year you have to forget about traditional chipping methods and just get the ball rolling on the ground - I didn't do that. Oh well, least those scores will help get the index up.

And congrats falcon - well done.

This time of year you have to forget about traditional chipping methods and just get the ball rolling on the ground

A few years ago when I was really at my peak, my go to shot around the green was the bump and run. I felt as good chipping with an 8 or 9 iron as I did putting from a similar distance.

Then I got my 60 degree wedge and started mastering the shot that hops once and spins. It was a great shot when I had less green to work with, but I've fallen too in love with it. I've gotten to the point that I use it even when a bump and run would be much safer.

The problem is you have to hit the spinner so hard, then when I try the bump and run I knock it off the green. It's simply a matter of having gotten away from it for too long, thus losing the touch. But I've decided in the past few weeks that one of my goals is to start trying to get the ball on the ground as quickly as possible again.

Yea I was pretty mad at myself. I am all for getting the ball on the ground as fast as possible, but I simply haven't worked on it much this winter. My 2 favorite clubs to go to are my 7 iron and my 4 hybrid - need to get back to that. I turned 74 into 80 Sunday and got killed. Still hurts to sit down.

Still a lot of white stuff on the ground here in Iowa, but reading all this golf talk has me foaming at the mouth. I recently just got fitted for a new set of clubs for the first time in my life. My last was a set of forged cleveland TA3 Gunmetals(off the rack). Long story short, i have a buddy who is a club fitter, and he got me a deal on a set of mizuno mp 64s. He moved me away from my dynamic gold s300 shafts to some dynalite xp s300 and soft stepped them. I'm a little nervous about the jump back to an enhancement iron that is more muscle back than cavity (the TA3 were a forged cavity... and were slightly more forgiving), but the mp64s were singing when i demoed them. Because of the price i left the 3 and 4 iron in the set, but if they give me any shite i'll probably just snag a hybrid or two. I can't wait to get these stick out on the course

The next purchase will be a new 56* wedge. The current one is a cleveland 588 circa 2003... i've regrooved it more times than i can count, but it is time to retire it. What are you guys playing? Everyone has been telling me to switch over to the vokey, but the cleveland RTX looks interesting.

can't wait to share some golf stories this year... i'm pretty jealous over here you southern focks

The Vokey is a super wedge for sure, but I've never personally cared for them. They are a bit more heavy than what I like in a wedge - but no doubt you can't go wrong with one. I play a 54* CG 15 (gunmetal) and a 58* Cleveland REG. 588. Both have standard bounce and both have Zip Grooves. I absolutely love my 588 - it has allowed me to do all kinds of things around the green that I just wasn't comfortable doing with my old 60*. I also have mine bent 2 degrees flat.

i was leaning to just getting another forged 588 with 10* bounce, but the blade RTX hype has me intrigued. It appears as though it is cast as the don't champion it as a forged club, but all the reviews have been singing it's praises... especially on open faced shots out of the bunker. You have any buddies endorsing the RTX? or read any good reviews?

To be honest, I do not have any buddies (that I know of) playing the RTX wedge. It looks pretty sharp - would love to hit it........ But like I mentioned - the REG 588 is incredible. It's forged and it's like butter.

I have a mizuno 56/8 that i really like... almost went with a vokey but the mizuno felt a little better... Think it has square grooves in it too...

Yep, same for me... Open stance, ball towards the back of your stance. slightly closed face, little bump and run almost a putting stroke.... Not as sexy as a 60 degree wedge flop shot, but risk/reward its much better choice if you have green to work with.

Not that I'm interested in cheating, but I just heard Craig Ludwig on The Ticket claim that he putts vasoline on his driver and that no matter how bad his swing is, he hits it long and straight.

Did some googling, and I guess it's a common hustlers trick. Apparently Trevino admitted on Feherty's show that he used to do it in his hustling days. He would lather up his towel, and when it looked like he was wiping the driver clean, he was really lathering it up. I guess it reduces all side spin. The ball will come out lower, like a knuckle ball, and while it may not fly as far, it'll roll forever.

I thought it was interesting. Sounds like something Edjr would try, that bastard.

Well, you are half right on edjr. He does Vaseline up his driver. However, it is the shaft that he puts the Vaseline on right before he shoves it up his ass. :o

I wouldn't mind walking on a golf course more than I do, but with working during the week I pretty much only play on weekends. And the courses I play they don't even allow you to walk on Saturday or Sundays.

I can't believe you talked about this. Fock yeah its a hustlers trick. Its called 'greasing'.

You know how you have 'groups' of friends? Your old school high school buddies, your college buddies, your work buddies, your neighbor buddies, your golf buddies, etc. And of cours sometimes a few of them cross pollenate. But anyway, I have one group of buddies. These are my bookie/golf/gambling/drinking buddies. They play for big money on the golf course, book ball games, go to strip clubs you know have a good time but most are either single or divorced (or about to be). Anyway I got caught up in a big money match somehow as one of these fockers when making a gambling match said he'd take me agaainst so and so for X amount of cash. Dude called me that night and said we had a big game in the morning and to be ther at 10:00am to hit balls before we tee'd off. Well as we put our bags on the cart he looked at me and said "make sure nobody is lookin'" I said "ummmm...okay" and meanwhile I see him pull out my driver, take off the cover, pull out a Chapstick out his pocket and 'grease' my driver.

About 12 holes later, after we started partaking in the firewarter and after I had been striping my driver down broadway like nobodys business for 12 holes I said to my partner "I really appreaciate you greasing my driver!" There was a pause and then we both busted out laughing and he said to never say that to him ever again.

Hit four 320 yard drives today with my new TM Burner 2.0 driver. It's the lightest driver I've ever hit but it works. Crazy long. Had three of the approach shots inside of 150 playing from the backs. Birdie par Birdie. Easiest club I have ever hit.
