I've Fallen and I Can't Get Up

Great news on my foot$#@!

It's cracked, but not bad. No surgery indicated. I get to walk in a walking boot for 4-6 weeks with some crutch assistance if necessary the first week.

Most doctors cannot stand fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, irritable bowel and related disorders. Many think it is psychosomatic and related to underlying psychiatric illness, as Nikki suggested.

Personally I think there are legitimate differences in pain perception. Some people are so sensitive even "normal" stimuli are painful - this can be shown in a controlled setting using devices called dolorimeters. There are other experiments where air is insufflated into the rectum and IBSers nerve responses are measured versus normal controls. It turns out their colons are more likely to spasm than those without the disease, so it's no surprise they experience chronic abdominal cramps.

It's hard to separate the physical from mental, as the everything we experience can be distilled to chemical reactions and the brain's interpretation of them. That being said, a lot of people with chronic pain are crazy, though its hard to determine if the pain is the chicken or the egg. Can you imagine you mental state if you suffered debilitating pain your entire life?

Malingering isn't that common, but I've seen it from time to time. Drug dependence and drug-seeking behavior are much more prevalent.

All this is off the top of my head; I won't fact check anything to see if all my studying has paid off.

I've never been diagnosed with fibromyalgia (haven't been to a doctor since I was 5, except for a blood test several years ago). What I predictably, menstrual cycle wise, experience every month definitely sounds like it, and it's at the points associated with FM. My brother does give me flack..."made up myalgia"...yeah. I'm not totally against the idea it's psychosomatic to an extent, however it baffles me why it would be going on. Right now I have heightened chemical sensitivity, FM pain, fatigue, and what always seems like a result of haywired signaling when it's going on- I'm thirsty, can't quench it, drink a little more than usual, pee a little more than usual. It's not "that time" but it happens at regular junctures in the overall 28 day long cycle. Meanwhile, mentally/emotionally I feel fine.

Doctors who experience fibromyalgia themselves are passionate about figuring it out.

That just made me crack up. I'm going to be honest here though... I really question that penultimatestraw is who he says he is sometimes. I really do. I'll leave it at that.

Do tell. And are you younger or older than my reported age?

Dunno what to tell you. PMS can cause a lot of physical symptoms before your period, or endometriosis during your cycle.

I don't know any doctors with fibromyalgia, but they probably exist.

So I found out today that I probably have vertigo. That's right, vertigo! I didn't even know that was a real thing.

Well anyway, I've been feeling like sh!t all week. Dizziness, nausea, feeling a little faint, wondering if I might pass out at any moment. Not fun. Not fun at all.

So I finally got in to the see the doc today. First thing they do is freak me out bigtime that I might be having some sort of cardiac episode. I was actually a little worried about that myself, but fock, I'm 32 years old. How could I be having a heart attack or something? Well anyway, they scared me pretty good. But then the EKG and other tests turned out fine. Phew.

A few more tests and the doc tells me: we're pretty sure you're having a problem with the fluid in your inner ear. When something's not right with the fluid it knocks of your balance, which is why you feel dizzy and nauseous.

Me: what the hell? Are you telling me I have vertigo?

Doc: yes, I think so. It can just happen sometimes and usually works itself out in a week or two.

Just thought I'd add to the medical complaints thread. <---- me, literally
