murf74 461 Posted January 20, 2013 http://m.nbcsports.com/content/nfl-considering-expanding-rooney-rule-coordinators I think Tomlin has a job for life and its pretty obvious he was always gonna be hired over Whiz at the time. This crap is stupid. If you are good enough you will get an interview and hire. If I were a black coach, I would hate this rule....how would you ever know if you have serious chance or you are only being interviewed because of the color of your skin
MDC 7,652 Posted January 20, 2013 I get that the NFL thinks black people are underrepresented as coaches and they have an incentive to encourage minority hires but this rule is ridiculous and it encourages teams to interview candidates they have no intention of hiring. Dumb.

Dumb. Yep it does nothing to help a hire unless you are Rooney doing the hiring. The more I hear Rooney on this rule the more obvious it is that he did not hire Whiz cause he is white

tanatastic 2,062 Posted January 20, 2013 Yea Iv been on the fence about this rule. On one hand I love the spirit and intentions of it. But if I were a minority coach I would HATE feeling like my interview was BS just cuz they had to. I might be wrong, but I feel the nfl has come far enough that the rule isn't needed. I wonder how many black coaches have their job because the rule forced an interview. It's prob 1 or none, they got the job fair and square.

The more I hear Rooney on this rule the more obvious it is that he did not hire Whiz cause he is white I wouldn't go that far. I think teams should be open to hiring minority coaches too. I just think the rule as constructed now encourages a lot of tokenism.
Joey Gladstone 33 Posted January 20, 2013 Shouldn't passing on a great minority candidate because of race be a team's self-imposed penalty?

Yep which is exactly why it is not needed. Its a business and to think an owner wouldn't hire the best coach cause he is black is absurd. Still waiting to see that all white football team and coaching staff. There isn't one and there never will be with or without Rooney
RLLD 4,275 Posted January 21, 2013 Shouldn't passing on a great minority candidate because of race be a team's self-imposed penalty? Of course, but you have to at least interview a lesser-qualified candidate, and hire them too
IGotWorms 4,060 Posted January 21, 2013 Tomlin has won a Superbowl, dummy. Maybe you just don't like black people? That would explain your avatar
RoadLizard 73 Posted January 21, 2013 Why don't they just make a rule that says all coaches must be black. Then, make a new rule that all owners must be black. Then, finish it off with all fans must be black. Done. Im sure Obama will support it. No sense is having merit and credentials be the reason for hiring someone. As long as its politically correct and makes the libtards happy.
murf74 461 Posted January 21, 2013 D. Tomlin has won a Superbowl, dummy. Maybe you just don't like black people? That would explain your avatar So what exactly about my avatar says I don't like black people? Yes nothing screams racist like Obama in a Santa hat. You of course dont follow politics more than what Jon Stewart spews, but that avatar represents how your current president won the election....promise a bunch of lazy bums like you free stuff and you will never lose an election again. I mean Santa is awesome he will give you free stuff for doing nothing. Who pays for it...oh that's magic just like Santa sleigh

SuaveSr 0 Posted January 21, 2013 It's about time for league to recognize the same issue at running back and institute the Riggins Rule and require each team to have at least one white running back on active roster or practice squad.

IGotWorms 4,060 Posted January 21, 2013 Why is it stupid? The reasons for his hiring and his success after the fact are two different things. You generally hire a coach to field a competitive team, right? Maybe even win a Superbowl now and then. Well Tomlin has done just that. So why not assume that they hired him because they thought he would be successful?

So why not assume that they hired him because they thought he would be successful? I'll let murf defend his reasons; he is a Steelers fan and follows the team more closely than I do. My point is that thinking Rooney hired him because he is black doesn't make you a racist. It's kinda like when Limbaugh said that McNabb gets a pass from the media because he is black -- that statement is not racist. Hopefully you can see the logic behind my point. I do, but I still suspect Murf is a racist. It's not too hard to read between the lines with him. Oh, and BTW, Limbaugh either is a racist or was engaging in dog whistle racism with his comments. I think a better example would be to say that maybe a guy like Romeo Crennel possibly keeps getting jobs mainly because of his race, since his track record stinks. As opposed to Tomlin, who has been very successful, and McNabb, who was generally one of the better QBs in the league for a decent portion of his career. Come on now; you're listening comprehension should be better than that. But for the fact that we are in such a sensitive, conservative-hating, society that looks for any reason to lash out at someone, anyone of average intelligence listening to Rush's comments recognize that he was clearly bashing the MEDIA. And what's more, he was RIGHT.

IGotWorms 4,060 Posted January 22, 2013 So racism is reserved for those who voted against Obama . . . Thanks for clarifying. No, it doesn't. That's just another example where Murf is a racist. There are plenty of people who are conservatives, who do not like Obama, did not vote for Obama, and are not racists. Murf isn't one of them though. P.S. The avatar I was objecting to is the one on the mobile version, which I now see is not the same as the one on the full version. The avatar on the mobile version is plainly racist. GreenTD 56 Posted January 22, 2013 Not sure how Murf's avatar is racist but back to the Rooney rule topic. While the idea of the Rooney rule has good intentions, I'm not sure what good it's doing. Like others have said, when a black coach is brought in for an HC interview & is the only one, how does he feel that it's possibly just lip service because of the Rooney Rule? Especially if he's the only black coach interviewed. I think if an owner is interviewing for someone to make his team/product successful, it wouldn't matter what color his skin is. The person's work ethic, knowledge of the game of football & people skills would have the likely edge over his ethnicity if I was the owner but I guess I'm naive to think that right?
