The Best Ten Songs of All Time

Recommended Posts

So, sometimes, while completing my mindless tasks at work, I daydream. I like to play music ranking games. So lets play one...

You are going to prison for five years, solitary confinement. You get one CD, with space for ten songs. That's it.

What songs are you putting on your disk? Specify version or cover if you wish.

Here's mine.

Hotel California - The Eagles (The live version off of Hell Freezes Over)

The Barricades of Heaven - Jackson Brown

Hallelujah - The Jeff Buckley Cover on Grace

The Sound of Silence - Simon and Garfunkel

Let's Stay Together - Al Green

Texas Country Feedback - R.E.M.

Crash - Dave Matthews Band

Visions of Johanna - Bob Dylan (The live version on Biograph)

Waterloo Sunset - The Kinks

Helplessly Hoping - Crosby, Stills, & Nash

Whatcha got?

I've seen just about all of of those bands play at Jazz Fest. Haven't seen The Kinks or JBCBand. Saw REM at a different venue though.

Al Green is the fawking man. Lets Stay Together is me and the wifeys song. When times are good or bad or happy or sad, we stay together.

I've scene hundreds of bands over the years at Jazz Fest and he was my favorite. Good choice.

Help Me Through The Night is a Joe Walsh (maybe even James Gang?)song from the early 70s, before his involvement with the Eagles.

A surprising absence of any Terrence Trent Darby songs so far.

He was going to be bigger than the Beatles. All you had to do was ask him and he'd tell you.

Most self-absrobed doosh I ever interviewed, and in the music/entertainment biz that's really saying something.

Best interview? Randy Bachman. Was still living the rock star life in the 90s long after he'd been a rock star. Played a local gig, stayed up all night partying, showed up at the radio station in-person, on-time at 7:30 am carrying an acoustic guitar. Proceeded to hang out, tell stories and play the fock out of anything I asked him to play for over an hour.

A highlight of my life is playing the Guess Who's "Undun" on acoustic guitar with Randy Bachman. Some jazz chords I'd never even seen before.

Yeah, I remember the big media crush on Darby. They were promoting the hell out of him. He had it all. Except the songs. lol I did lie one of his songs though.."If You Let Me Stay". That was a great song. Wishing Well was his big hit, but I thought it was average, at best.

Over an hour late for his phone-in, then cut it short by half. Had he cut it by another 99% I'd have been grateful.

Big fan of Allison, Positively 4th Street and especially Sweet Virginia. Saw some of an old Stones concert doc the other night (Maybe "Ladies and Gentlemen...). They absolutely crushed that song.

Surprised not to see "The Beat Goes On".

I saw the Stones S.T.P. Tour 1972 , Bobby Keys nailed that song on Sax.

When I hear Lets Stay Together, I instantly think of Pulp Fiction. Great song though, one of those timeless tunes that will be listen to forever. I formulated a top 10 list a while back based on a number of factors, such as popularity, influential-ness, overall song quality, song structure(good intro/outro, well formed verses, hooks, ect). It wasn't necessarily my personal favorite ten songs, but trying to create an unbiased, broad, consensus list. I forget what the list was exactly, and I'm sure I will delete/add some songs, but it went something like :

Stairway to Heaven- Led Zepplin

Comfortably Numb- Pink Floyd

One- Metallica

One- U2

The Thunder Rolls- Garth Brooks

The Wind of Change- Scorpions

Layla- Clapton

Walk The Line- Johnny Cash

Sound of Silence- S&G

Free Bird- Skynyrd

Really, past the top 3, you can argue any of about 500 songs. I have come to the conclusion that there is only one song that, say if you were to poll 100,00 people on their top 5 or 10 songs, that would easily be the most picked song in the top 10 list, and that song is Stairway to Heaven. Stairway is the greatest song ever recorded, looking at it from many angles, not just based on opinion. Whenever someone in a movie or just in general write/hear/play a song that is decent, it's usually compared to Stairway, by saying something like,"Well, it's not exactly Stairway to Heaven, but it's pretty good." I have made this argument before on here, but it's the only song that you can say is the greatest of all time. Honestly, it's far from my favorite song, my personal top 10 list would be a lot different.

One(Metallica) and Comfortably Numb, though aren't quite on the same level as Stairway, are both incredible songs top to bottom, and should be included in most top ten lists. I found those 3 songs to be, more or less, a clear cut top 3.

And of course people will argue Stairway isn't even Zeps best song! Okay, fair point, but no song of theirs is on the same level as far as being influential and timeless. Even dumb kids my age know Stairway, but most don't know Kashmir or Black Dog off the top of their head at least. I think the biggest factor in a truly great song(or band for that matter) is how it transcends through the generations and decades. For example, Metallica is incredibly popular with my generation, despite their peak being well before our teenage and early adult years. Most of Led's stuff is dated, still great, but doesn't translate well to kids nowadays. Except for Stairway, that song will be listened to until the end of time.

Recheck your data Trebeck. It was released as a single and on the Urban Cowboy soundtrack by Walsh.

Aside from Nirvana, that's a pretty damn good list

I hate Nirvana with a passion.

Let me correct the above...I hate Cobain with a passion. Spineless

I was kinda suprised that you left Morrisey / The Smiths "How soon is now" off your list
