naomi 360 Posted October 10, 2014 tanatastic, if you're at a loss for what strikes passion in you, envision doing a "giving back" type of job...it's cliche but do you think that could oddly make you happy? Something like an instructional assistant (IA) at a public school where you're tasked with guiding kids. It's more one-on-one than teaching and usually requires going from class to class, catching kids in between class, etc. IA levels go from 'normal' kids, to behavioral and/or minor learning problems, to heavily challenged but still at a regular public school. MTSkiBum 1,626 Posted October 10, 2014 Can you sum up the oilfield worker personality? There is quite a bit of pressure, oil rigs are very expensive to operate, anywhere between 50,000 dollars a day for a land drilling rig to over 1 million dollars a day to operate a deepwater rig in the gulf of mexico. There can be lots of stress when things go wrong because of the money at stake. There can also be incredibly long hours, a normal workshift is working 12 hours a day every day for 2 weeks in a row. But it can be longer, I worked as a "fluids engineer" when I worked on the rig, and since I was the only one, if they were problems with the fluid systems I was expected to work however long it took to get the problem fixed, even if that means working 30 hours with only a nap here or there. The benefit is everyone is paid pretty well. Even someone starting out with only a highschool education can start at 70,000 a year and can hit 150,000 a year when they get some experience. There are not many jobs that can give a highschool grad 6 figure pay and 26 weeks of vacation a year.

Giants Fan 85 Posted October 10, 2014 Go to three different colleges, get three different degrees, and get yourself into debt with the federal government, even after bankruptcy to the tune of about $65k, then find out you have spinal stenosis, which pretty much prevents you from being able to work full time, but not enough for disability. Move back in with your parents, then come back here, and I will listen to your story of woe.

naomi 360 Posted October 10, 2014 I take it you didn't find this to be constructive criticism? ...If you were serious, IA's are not guidance counselors. They try to help kids focus and to an extent they deal with their school related baggage. Tanatastic seems to have a personality where he could flow with that. Not sure if you've read his posts on this subject, but he doesn't want to put in any substantive work to make money. What about his personality makes you think he would put in such work to not make much money?

What about his personality makes you think he would put in such work to not make much money? Yeah, it's a bad job if good money is the goal. I was thinking about his statements about being accustomed to making due with a modest income. Maybe he's always written off the idea of altruistic seeming jobs like that, but he would wind up enjoying it. He likes to share his insights to see people practically succeed. A job where you're doing that almost all the time, that doesn't take beyond a H.S. diploma..

By the way, you have the right personality for those mining jobs. I worked with a guy who had a mine in Alaska and was looking for people to run that type of equipment. You would be a perfect fit. Giants Fan 85 Posted October 10, 2014 I apologize for the rambling, but this is a great story. My Dad and I took a trip, to old Vermont one summer. We had a name and a birthday. The family history that had spawned from one civil war vet was lost ... i had a copy of his memoirs. Different people had tried over the years, so,e paid to come up with foregone conclusions, my father said. He always said we were secret Jews, prolly sounds good for my step-mom who is full on Russian Jew. Anyway, we are in Rutland, VT for one night, after our tour of Canada and known relatives there, and we've pretty much given up. Says right there in the memoirs, "died of consumption" which is TB when I was 9 years old and I never knew anything about my Dad's family. So, anyway, we are at the historical society, weather has been perfect the whole time, summer ... Ad these old guys are trying to show me how to use ancestry.com ... We have some leads. This place is open 2 nights a week for like 4 hours at a time, we happen to be there that night on our way back. They are closing up, and there is only one old guy left there to lock up. It starts to pour rain, only time the whole trip. And the old guy asks us if we found anything, and then he asks if we knew his religion, and I didn't know but my Dad said "Congregational". Well, there's two copies of the minutes of the Congrgational Church of Rutland VT ... the one in the New England Historical society in Boston, and this one here in Rutland, and this old guy went and got it. I almost cried when we found it. A baptism record .... And his father was a deacon in the church, over the next couple years, by process of elimination ... 1635. Long ass time ago. Didn't make me any money, but it gave me a greater understanding of who I was. Just a pinmaker from London. Also, despite all the money the wealthy side of this family has spent, over hundreds of years.... I also felt pretty awesome about being the one that broke the code. No amount of money, ever woulda done it ... Took boots on the ground. I'm proud of that. And for me, finally when someone asks about my heritage ... I'm English. But that was so long ago ... I'm an American now. English, Dutch, Canadian ... after 400 years ... 'merican damnit.

Giants Fan 85 Posted October 10, 2014 I remember it like it was yesterday. Guy says to me, "Do you have a birthday? " and i gave him the date, and about 3 months after that, same name, baptism record, different page listed parents names. Yer gonna be shocked but ... you ever read Ralph Waldo Emerson? I'm related to the Emersons. Directly descended from William Bradford .... that get's difficult to prove but ... according to one University that's true. My great grandmother, who's maiden name was Davis. She was also a writer. Published even, which was rare for women back then. Then Poe on my Mom's side, my uncle Mark looks exactly like him. They all say it's proven, they have seen proof .... can't show me proof. Poe, and that family is very hard to prove. I need to look into it more, but Emerson ... i am about 90% sure. Giants Fan 85 Posted October 10, 2014 Silence Emerson. Emerson's sister. Great x 3 grandma. Nobody knew that. I remember as a kid in grade school getting really jealous when one girl explained she had ancestors on the Mayflower .... and I didn't know anything. Came home and asked my parents, and they didn't know much. I've learned a lot since then. One of my relatives contacted me recently and mentioned she was applying for the Mayflower Society and if I had any proof, such as the William Bradford claim, but that is fairly recent. I was named after my great grandfather and we are talking about his wife. So, I regretfully informed my distant relative of what I knew would not apply to her, and she said, if that was true, i had 6 ancestors on the Mayflower. SIX? Merican bro ... Prolly most white dudes have at least 1.

Giants Fan 85 Posted October 10, 2014 My point is ... do cool shiat. Do whatever it is that makes you happy. If you want to learn about your ancestors, travel to where they are from. Walk the same streets they walked. If you are into that "finding yourself" kind of thing. Enjoy life by doing whatever it is that makes you happy.
