UPDATE: If Cobb moves... - Cobb Re-Signs with Packers

Recommended Posts

Packers won't overpay. Hopefully, Cobb is having regular conversations with his old buddies Jennings and Jones on what it's like busting up your body to play for crappy teams, being fantasy football irrelevant, and losing your endorsements.

Hopefully, Cobb is talking with James Jones - who is a pretty self-fulfilled dude these days. He has returned to his home turf and has extensive involvement with the community. Apparently he has discovered something more personally valuable (and longterm) than commercial endorsements.

P.S. I doubt that he gives a flying f*ck about 'being fantasy football irrelevant'. : )

Hey... I'm all about community work. Kudos to JJ.... But he only has a tiny portion of time in his life to completely beat up his body for personal football glory... which he's dedicated his life to... and he's wasting it.

So, he's went from leading the NFL in TD catches... being a STUD... to averaging 9 yards a catch and having scrub-type numbers on a sh!tty team that loses every week.. He's went from playing for Super Bowls and putting up amazing number to losing every week on a crappy team..

NFL careers are short. Especially for wide receivers.... Maximize while you can.

Great QBs make WRs. JJ focked up. He can do community work wherever for the 50 years after he retires... that shouldn't be part of the equation.

If your whole life is eat, drink, sleep, breathing football, I doubt that Jones enjoys being football irrelevant ....much like Jennings.

Yes, I hope Cobb is watching Jones and Jennings. Those are some sad stories.

ETA: Donald Driver ran his own Foundation out of Green Bay.... and two inner-city centers in hometown Houston.... all while playing for GB! You can have self-fulfillment from anywhere in the country!

I want the Pack to keep Cobb, but I wouldn't fault him - nor did I fault Jennings or Jones - for hunting down a pay check for him and his family. Whether your goals in life are money or rings, it doesn't matter to me. To each their own.

That said, if he thinks he is going to continue his stud status if he picks a team with no QB, then he is mistaken.

Cobb is going where the $$$ is right now. When he signs his next deal at say age 29, he may go where the rings are then.

Contenders dont typically opt for 30 year old fa wrs.

So my point is a 29 year old like Cobb could sign a team friendly one year deal to grab a ring. You're going to say that's improbable? If he's performing at a high level at that age, some contender may pick him up. Like a Wes Welker signing with Denver.

Cobb is 24. He's signing his next contract at 27 or 28. It's either mega..... or it's non-existent..... Cobb as a Packer will be mega....he will put up monster numbers... Cobb with Oak/Jax..... will be minimum.... A 5'10" receiver with crapasss QB and no rapport is getting no money.

Cobb can grab maybe a million now from some crappy team but lose millions in the long run... pretty simple

Cobb is coming to Oakland, where he'll play flanker opposite of Kevin White or Amari Cooper. On passing downs he'll move inside to the slot, and James Jones will move to Y receiver.

Obviously it's a black hole, no pun intended, but he'll be fantasy relevant,

What about andre holmes?

i'm confused. i thought GB had exclusive negotitating rights until Tuesday? isnt that tampering?

I think they can give prelim numbers...and negotiate. GB had exclusive signing rights til tuesday.

Man... Green Bay has a great WR corps locked down for years. This draft is going to be interesting.

Yeah obviously a bad call on my part I thought he was gone. Said all along they were crazy to let him go. He's a much different case than Jennings, Jones et al and looks like the Pack saw that.

There is a 3-day negotiating period prior to free agency actually beginning where teams can have contact with players set to become unrestricted free agents (their agents only) and negotiate a deal, however a deal can't be finalized and a player can't actually visit a club until Tuesday.

It's kind of silly, but basically free agency has already begun.

nice to see cobb take less to stay connected to a successful situation

So the Packers have Rodgers locked up for 5 more years, Cobb/Nelson for 4 years, and Adams/Janis/R Rodgers/Abbrederis for 3 years.... I guess TT isn't going to draft many skill players this year or next.

This signing might make it harder to sign Bulaga, but at least they have a lot of flexibility in the draft now. Plus, the teams offering Bulaga 7-8 million are WAS, JAX, and TB. I bet most players would take a discount to stay in GB.

For All the crazy stuff in Football.... Ray Rice, Greg Hardy, AP, etc.

There are still guys like Randall Cobb. Hes a different cat. He went to my alma mater (UK) and STILL comes back to do work in the community. Hes a humble, well-spoken, intelligent athlete. Hes always put TEAM and WINNING first. This move did not surprise me.

This is a win for Him and for Green Bay and really for the NFL (its always better for traditional teams to be strong...especially on offense)

Would love to keep Bulaga, but I think he's gone

Smart move by Cobb. Stay where you not only get paid a good bit but also have a chance at a ring

I think Cobb was HUGE for them down the stretch and in the playoffs. Dallas couldn't guard him really. With all the talk of him leaving, and Oakland beat writers were already giving him a uniform number, was amazed they'd let him go. I thought he was a Raider, and haven't been that wrong on something in a long time.

Of the two I thought they'd keep Bulaga first. But having said that, this years draft has plenty of quality OT's at the bottom of round one. Didn't think the Pack would take a chance with Rodgers protection, especially in light of his injuries last season.

Bulaga might be gone. Or he might do similar to Cobb...leave a little on the table to stay with the same group of guys and contend for titles.

I didn't think TT would pay 10 mil for Cibb...but he did. So won't surprise me to see him pony up for Bulaga.

- agreed

solid move all around, those guys left some unfinished biz on the table up in Seattle.

can't see that team falling short of at least the NFC 'chip in '15 -

I really dont think this was a good move. The packers had plenty of young talent at wr. I think having a good offensive line is much more important than keeping cobb.

- seeing as how Rodgers is THE one indidpensible part, you're correct in opinion of bolstering/solidifying the o-line ... but does the Cobb signing really portend that Bulaga walks?

The Packers have 33 million in cap space (I do not know if that was pre- or post-Cobb contact). I believe they can still sign Bulaga and have plenty of room for their rookies. 2016 and 2017 might be harder, but since the Packers rarely chase FAs, they should be good in the long run.

I really dont know if it impacts bulaga specifically. I think overall it takes away from other more important positions.

Lol... They've been leaving 'unfinished biz' on the table for years, starting in 2010 when Ted Thompson arrogantly passed up on a trade for Marshawn Lynch. That team should have two or three super bowl trophies right now.

But I'm just a dumb Raider fan so what the fock do I know...

If you're satisfied with that one lone super bowl as a Packer fan that's your right. You pays your money you takes your choice. I wish I could go back and find the thread from five years ago, where Pack fans were defending Thompson for not spending a Four on Lynch and staying within the organization with Brandon Jackson.

Agreed. I think green bay overpaid. Why lock up so much $ in the receiver position when you have a QB who can make anyone look good?

You guys act like having a HoF passer AND probowl receivers locked in for the long term is a bad thing. As long as they can afford it, why not? The Packers are very stingy in the FA market and they are smart with the draft and keeping a young team. They can splurge every so often on key players.

Who said I was satisfied.

But if you want to claim unfinished business...you might want to start in a year where they didn't win it all.

I don't think many were that fond of Jackson.

Lynch would have been nice...giving a 4...but the guy is not a great fit for GB (McCarthy and Thompson). Types like him get shipped out quick.

Oh, and adding Lynch does not mean they would have won anymore titles at this point either.

Because they work well together.

Because the cap is rising and they had plenty of money to do it.

Because the cap will likely rise again in the next few years and it won't seem like such a high price.
