Voltaire 5,203 Posted September 25, 2015 I'm pretty bitter about your Cleopatra pick. I felt my picks needed a more scholarly bent, so I went Hemingway first. I would have picked Cleo next fur sure. Nice work. I figured people would get to that category really soon so I had to prioritize it. Here's the thing about Seductress category... there's a lot of them. Plug in any king and you've got 80% if not more chance of finding some illicit lover. With some effort you find names. But the thing is, I know jack sh*t about any of them and fock all if I'm going to put that much work into it to figure out if this king's mistress is more seductive than that ones. Then there's chicks that are legendary for their mind-blowing hotness but don't really do much seducing. There are wives that are loyal. There are chicks that you think were seducing but you don't know the juicy bits. Two of my favorites aren't real. Scheherazade is a work of fiction, not a real woman. Devastating. It's a tough category and there's not a lot of details unless you are inclined to dig through dead guys' bedrooms which isn't my thing. You know how I've been throwing TBBOM under the bus for choosing to draft in this polluted environment... yeah... well this is his category.
shotsup 832 Posted September 25, 2015 Yeah, this place sucks. I mean I like it, Anyways, this draft isn't one of them. I've known all along the Geek Club wasn't cut out for this sort of thing. It was TBBOM's idea to recruit here. I thought he was nuts. I've known all along this place is a toilet. . Tell me about it. I tried to start a thread about reading a book and got shot down. You're one away. We're still waiting on Vudu. Generals come in two flavors: Strategic and Tactical. Lee ranks better in tactical IMO but you can switch him. Also this is kind of unofficial. vuduchile 1,945 Posted September 26, 2015 Explorer - Neil Armstrong. Fock Columbus, Magellan, Lewis and Clark and all the rest. Those guys explored places here on earth that the "civilized" world hadn't previously known. But, there were already human inhabitants in all those places. On the other hand, Neil Armstrong flew in a goddamned rocket ship to another PLANET! Did you hear what I said? A different planet. As in, NOT this one you're sitting on. When he got there, he got out of the rocket and took a little stroll just to see what he could see. Who gives a sh!t if we learned anything useful from his exploration. And don't gimme any lip about all the NASA guys running the show from the ground. This guy set foot in a place where no human had ever gone before. The entire world was captivated by his trip and his success opened the floodgates for space exploration beyond mankind's wildest dreams. This guy was brave, adventurous, and as cool as a cucumber. Vasco De Gama couldn't carry his jock.

Voltaire 5,203 Posted September 26, 2015 I select Homer - poet The Iliad and the oddesey are probably the most influential poems ever written in western culture. They weren't written they were memorized and recited orally for 800 years before an alphabet became available to which they could be written down. That the story line up so well with archaeological finding is really a testament to the quality and professionalism of the bards who kept the story going all those many generations. And not just the Illiad but King Minos, lots of stories from pre-history, pre-writing survived.
titans&bucs&bearsohmy! 2,745 Posted September 26, 2015 You mother focker. One of those two was gonna be my next pick. Otto Von Bismark, advisor. Standing behind the Hohenzollern throne, he turned Prussia from a second rate power into the core of the strongest country in Europe.

Voltaire 5,203 Posted September 26, 2015 This was more the way I was thinking when I set up the category but I gotta say I really loved Vudu's decision to plug Nelson Mandela in as 'Criminal' rather than 'Reformer' because a light went on in my head. I thought of some other great people with great causes who were incarcerated so I plan to mix in -shall we call them- good criminals with bad ones.

vuduchile 1,945 Posted September 27, 2015 Great Woman I'd like to see Rhonda Rousey in the cage with this dyke. Joan of Arc Joan of Arc, in French, Jeanne d'Arc, also called the Maid of Orleans, a patron saint of France and a national heroine, led the resistance to the English invasion of France in the Hundred Years War. When Joan was about 12 years old, she began hearing "voices" of St. Michael, St. Catherine, and St. Margaret believing them to have been sent by God. These voices told her that it was her divine mission to free her country from the English and help the dauphin gain the French throne. They told her to cut her hair, dress in man's uniform and to pick up the arms. Joan convinced the captain of the dauphin's forces, and then the dauphin himself of her calling. After passing an examination by a board of theologians, she was given troops to command and the rank of captain. At the battle of Orleans in May 1429, Joan led the troops to a miraculous victory over the English. She continued fighting the enemy in other locations along the Loire. Fear of troops under her leadership was so formidable that when she approached Lord Talbot's army at Patay, most of the English troops and Commander Sir John Fastolfe fled the battlefield. Fastolfe was later stripped of his Order of the Garter for this act of cowardice. Although Lord Talbot stood his ground, he lost the battle and was captured along with a hundred English noblemen and lost 1800 of his soldiers. Charles VII was crowned king of France on July 17, 1429 in Reims Cathedral. At the coronation, Joan was given a place of honor next to the king. Later, she was ennobled for her services to the country. In 1430 she was captured by the Burgundians while defending Compiegne near Paris and was sold to the English. The English, in turn, handed her over to the ecclesiastical court at Rouen led by Pierre Cauchon, a pro-English Bishop of Beauvais, to be tried for witchcraft and heresy. Much was made of her insistence on wearing male clothing. She was told that for a woman to wear men's clothing was a crime against God. Her determination to continue wearing it (because her voices hadn't yet told her to change, as well as for protection from sexual abuse by her jailors) was seen as defiance and finally sealed her fate. Joan was convicted after a fourteen-month interrogation and on May 30, 1431 she was burned at the stake in the Rouen marketplace. She was nineteen years old. Charles VII made no attempt to come to her rescue. In 1456 a second trial was held and she was pronounced innocent of the charges against her. She was beatified in 1909 and canonized in 1920 by Pope Benedict XV

titans&bucs&bearsohmy! 2,745 Posted September 27, 2015 I will take the first off the board in the Doctor category. Hippocrates of Kos (/hɪˈpɒkrəˌtiːz/; Greek: Ἱπποκράτης; Hippokrátēs; c. 460 c. 370 BC) was a Greek physician of the Age of Pericles (Classical Greece), and is considered one of the most outstanding figures in the history of medicine. He is referred to as the "Father of Western Medicine"[1][2][3] in recognition of his lasting contributions to the field as the founder of the Hippocratic School of Medicine. This intellectual school revolutionized medicine in ancient Greece, establishing it as a discipline distinct from other fields with which it had traditionally been associated (theurgy and philosophy), thus establishing medicine as a profession.[4][5] However, the achievements of the writers of the Corpus, the practitioners of Hippocratic medicine, and the actions of Hippocrates himself were often commingled; thus very little is known about what Hippocrates actually thought, wrote, and did. Hippocrates is commonly portrayed as the paragon of the ancient physician, and credited with coining the Hippocratic Oath, still relevant and in use today. He is also credited with greatly advancing the systematic study of clinical medicine, summing up the medical knowledge of previous schools, and prescribing practices for physicians through the Hippocratic Corpus and other works.[4][6]
Voltaire 5,203 Posted September 27, 2015 10.3 for Bipolarbear is Robin Williams - Talk Show Guest My picks on the corner are 10.5 Augustus Caesar - Administrator - Bringer of Pax Romana, former of the Roman Empire, the height of Roman prestige, power and economic might reigned for 40 years. The Roman Empire of popular imagination is the Rome run by Augustus. 11.1 Subotai - General (Strategical) If you're not familiar with him here's a cut and paste of the first paragraph from his wikipedia entry. Wiki does a terrible job on some of the people I will want to draft but they do him justice and I'm feeling lazy. Subutai (Classical Mongolian: Sübügätäi or Sübü'ätäi; Modern Mongolian: Сүбэдэй, Sübedei; Chinese: 速不台 1175–1248) was a Tuva Turkic general, and the primary military strategist of Genghis Khan and Ögedei Khan. He directed more than twenty campaigns in which he conquered thirty-two nations and won sixty-five pitched battles, during which he conquered or overran more territory than any other commander in history.[1] He gained victory by means of imaginative and sophisticated strategies and routinely coordinated movements of armies that were hundreds of kilometers away from each other. He is also remembered for devising the campaign that destroyed the armies of Hungary and Poland within two days of each other, by forces over five hundred kilometers apart. Lots more.
