Natalia Veselnitskaya, a Russian attorney who has lobbied in the U.S. for the repeal of the anti-oligarch Magnitsky Act, brought a colleague to her meeting with Donald Trump Jr., Paul Manafort, and Jared Kushner: Ex-Soviet counter-intelligence agent Rinat Akhmetshin, the Daily Beast reports.

Akhmetshin was working in the capacity of a lobbyist at the time of the meeting and has denied current connections to Russian intelligence, according to NBC News. He was, however, part of a cadre of lobbyists from the Human Rights Accountability Global Initiative Foundation tasked with overturning sanctions such as the Magnitsky Act.

Also lobbying for the repeal of the Magnitsky Act was a handful of other associates, including Glenn Simpson of Fusion GPS, according to a U.S. Department of Justice complaint. If that lobbying firm seems familiar, that's because Fusion GPS was behind the salacious Steele dossier, a document containing unreliable anti-Trump “raw intelligence” dumped prior to the election.

The Steele dossier was less intelligence than “opposition research” that was originally requested from the anti-Trump wing of the Republican Party, and particularly, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ). The opposition research would later be requested and leaked by Democratic Party operatives.

The legal team for President Donald Trump has argued that Fusion GPS played a role in arranging the meeting with Veselnitskaya and Akhmetshin.

“We have learned from both our own investigation and public reports that the participants in the meeting misrepresented who they were and who they worked for,” said Mark Corallo, a Trump legal spokesman. “Specifically, we have learned that the person who sought the meeting is associated with Fusion GPS, a firm which according to public reports, was retained by Democratic operatives to develop opposition research on the president and which commissioned the phony Steele dossier.”
