Before I make my next pick I need a little clarification. For the General category, are we talking 1 star and up or 4 star minimum?

I don't want to hold things up but it's getting late and I'm heading to bed soon. Anybody care if I make my picks in the morning after people have had a chance to weigh in?

One star and up I suppose or whatever the equivent rank in Navy, Air Force, or Marines.

If you have a controversial pick, make your pick anyway and ask and we can get pissed off about it later. That's how I've handled it when I've brushed with the line.

Also, I'm not the final authority. I'd told TBBOM that Aldren and Armstrong were a fine pairing and the group said "no".

Also, where did we come down on the foreigners in the wild card category?

I think we said no. We need unaanimous consent. Vudu kinda deflated the balloon when he pointed out that Christopher Columbus would qualify, then I moved on from the de La Salle pick as you did with de Soto.

They have to have been a US citizen at one time.

As for "event" and "hero" although we didn't get any 'no's' we never reached agreement on them and the conversation around them just sort of died.

With the draft so deep now, we'd need unanimous consent from all eight people to add categories. I am open to it. I pulled each one of these categories out of my ass when this started. It was my intetion to be all inclusive. I threw everything in I could think of into the mix.

Now that we're actually doing the draft, rather than me just thinking of doing it and brainstorming categories, I'm seeing now the things I missed or screwed up.

The world history draft was a nice trial run so I had a good template but it's still 30% different and I can see things I'd do differently if I were to do it again.

47.8 Chesty Puller - General (If he doesn't qualify here, move him to the Badass category with Carlos Hathcock)

Lewis Burwell "Chesty" Puller (June 26, 1898 – October 11, 1971) was a United States Marine Corps lieutenant general who, early in his military career, fought guerrillas in Haiti and Nicaragua. He later went on to serve with distinction in World War II and the Korean War.

Puller is the most decorated Marine in American history. He is one of two U.S. servicemen awarded five Navy Crosses and one Army Distinguished Service Cross. Puller's five Crosses are next in number to the eight times XXXXXXXXXXXX received the nation's second-highest military award for valor.[1]

In 1955 (after 37 years of service), Puller retired from the Marine Corps. He lived in Virginia and died in 1971, at age 73.

Puller received the second-highest U.S. military award six times (one of only two persons so honored): five Navy Crosses and one U.S. Army Distinguished Service Cross. He was the second of two U.S. servicemen to ever receive five Navy Crosses.

47.8 Chesty Puller - General (If he doesn't qualify here, move him to the Badass category with Carlos Hathcock)

I don't know how the Marines do it but in the Army "Be My Little General" B=1 M=2 L=3 G= 4

In the Army, Lieutentant General is three stars. That's pretty damn high.

We don't have a Badass category, but we should.

48.3 - Buffalo Bill - Old West

William Frederick "Buffalo Bill" Cody (February 26, 1846 – January 10, 1917) was an American scout, bison hunter, and showman. He was born in Le Claire, Iowa Territory (now the U.S. state of Iowa), but he lived for several years in his father's hometown in Toronto Township, Ontario, Canada, before the family returned to the Midwest and settled in the Kansas Territory.

Buffalo Bill started working at the age of eleven, after his father's death, and became a rider for the Pony Express at age 14. During the American Civil War, he served the Union from 1863 to the end of the war in 1865. Later he served as a civilian scout for the US Army during the Indian Wars, receiving the Medal of Honor in 1872.

One of the most colorful figures of the American Old West, Buffalo Bill's legend began to spread when he was only twenty-three. Shortly thereafter he started performing in shows that displayed cowboy themes and episodes from the frontier and Indian Wars. He founded Buffalo Bill's Wild West in 1883, taking his large company on tours in the United States and, beginning in 1887, in Great Britain and continental Europe.

The Marines are the same way. Lieutenant General is 3 stars. One rank below "General", which is 4 stars. The category is "General/Admiral", so I wanted to make sure Lt.Gen. or Vice Admiral and the like were acceptable.

48.2 Jerry Rice - Football

To say Jerry Rice had a great career would be an understatement. The Hall of Fame wide receiver made 13 Pro Bowls, won three Super Bowls, and is widely regarded as the greatest football player to ever live.

Jerry Rice has set the record for career NFL receptions, receiving yards, touchdown catches, all-purpose yards, seasons with at least 1,000 receiving yards, consecutive games with at least one reception, shoud we keep going or do you get the idea?

And if all those regular season and career records weren't enough, Rice also has his name in the record books plenty of times for his work in his four Super Bowl appearances, such as total receptions, receiving yards, all-purpose yards, catches in a Super Bowl game, etc.

48.5 - Alfred Thayer Mahan- Non Fiction Writer

Alfred Thayer Mahan [məˈhæn] (September 27, 1840 December 1, 1914) was a United States naval officer and historian, whom John Keegan called "the most important American strategist of the nineteenth century."[1] His book The Influence of Sea Power Upon History, 16601783 (1890) won immediate recognition, especially in Europe, and with its successor, The Influence of Sea Power Upon the French Revolution and Empire, 17931812 (1892), made him world-famous and perhaps the most influential American author of the nineteenth century.[2]

Me and him were tied tgether at the hip in FF each year when I was new. Towards the end of his career, I always got him in the 3rd round. He would still be putting up low end WR1 #s. Everybody expected a dropoff like Irving Fryar who went from Pro Bowl to toilet bowl in one offseason. Rice never had the dropoff. His dropoff was from godly to excellent and it always seemed those half dozen year of excellent were always spent on my roster. He was still in the Pro Bowl in his last year.

Here's my roster in the first year of the IBL: http://www98.myfantasyleague.com/2001/options?L=6368&O=07

At that time MFL cannibalized the previous year for updating the next year, so it lists Bill Shroeder as a Lion. That was the next year. Shroeder had been a Packer.

I wasnt playing ff during that era, but I assume he was absolutely dominant in his prime.

I started playing when the greatest show on turf came along and like a rookie idiot, drafted Troy Aikman as my first round pick. I was a Cowboys fan and figured I had to have a good QB to win. Right?

I think I picked up Culpepper as a starter after a couple of games.

48.8 Dean Acheson - Cabinet

Dean Gooderham Acheson (pronounced /ˈæɪsən/;[1] April 11, 1893 – October 12, 1971) was an American statesman and lawyer. As United States Secretary of State in the administration of President Harry S. Truman from 1949 to 1953, he played a central role in defining American foreign policy during the Cold War.[2] Acheson helped design the Marshall Plan and was a key player in the development of the Truman Doctrine and creation of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.[3]

Acheson's most famous decision was convincing President Truman to intervene in the Korean War in June 1950. He also persuaded Truman to dispatch aid and advisors to French forces in Indochina, though in 1968 he finally counseled President Lyndon B. Johnson to negotiate for peace with North Vietnam. During the Cuban Missile Crisis, President John F. Kennedy called upon Acheson for advice, bringing him into the executive committee (ExComm), a strategic advisory group.

49.1 - NHL Team

Need a ruling on the Montreal Canadiens. This pick is the Detroit Red Wings if the Montreal Canadiens do not qualify. If you think Canadian franchises in the NHL, NBA, and MLB qualify, I'll take Montreal.

I'll go with whatever the majority of you think it should be.

We can continue on while we discuss Montreal's eligibility. I would think not since they are a Canadian team but I'm fine either way.

is the NHL an American corporation like MLB and NFL? If so the Canadiens are fine imo

The Board of Governors is the ruling and governing body of the National Hockey League. In this context, each team is a member of the league, and each member appoints a Governor (usually the owner of the club), and two alternates to the Board. The current chairman of the Board is Boston Bruins owner, Jeremy Jacobs. The Board of Governors exists to establish the policies of the league, and to uphold its constitution. Some of the responsibilities of the Board of Governors include:[69]

  • review and approve any rule changes to the game.
  • hiring and firing of the commissioner.
  • review and approve the purchase, sale, or relocation of any member club.
  • review and approve the salary caps for member clubs.
  • review and approve any changes to the structure of the game schedule.

The Board of Governors meets twice per year, in the months of June and December, with the exact date and place to be fixed by the Commissioner.

The chief executive of the league is Commissioner Gary Bettman. Some of the principal decision makers who serve under the authority of the commissioner include:

  • Deputy Commissioner & Chief Legal Officer: Bill Daly
  • Executive VP & CFO: Craig Harnett
  • Chief Operating Officer: John Collins
  • Executive VP & Director of Hockey Operations: Colin Campbell
  • NHL Enterprises: Ed Horne
  • Senior Vice-President of Player Safety: Stephane Quintal

That's good reasoning. Yes they are and the home offices have been in NYC for thirty years.

Keep this going until TBBOM wakes up. Well, I have a cult leader who ordered the suicide of almost 1000 followers, might as well pick another strong religious role model.

49.6 - Elijah Muhammad - Religious Leader

During his time as leader of the Nation of Islam, Muhammad had developed the Nation of Islam from a small movement in Detroit to an empire consisting of banks, schools, restaurants, and stores across 46 cities in America. The Nation also owned over 15,000 acres of farmland, their own truck- and air- transport systems, as well as a publishing company that printed the country's largest Black newspaper.[18] As a leader, Muhammad served as a mentor to many notable members, such as Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, Louis Farrakhan and his son Warith Deen Mohammed. The Nation of Islam is estimated to have between 20,000 and 50,000 members,[19] and 130 mosques offering numerous social programs.[20] Upon his death, his son Warith Deen Mohammed succeeded him. Warith disbanded the Nation of Islam in 1976 and founded an orthodox mainstream Islamic organization, that came to be known as the American Society of Muslims. The organization would dissolve, change names and reorganize many times. In 1977, Louis Farrakhan resigned from Warith Deen's reformed organization and reinstituted the original Nation of Islam upon the foundation established by Wallace Fard Muhammad and Elijah Muhammad. Farrakhan regained many of the Nation of Islam's original properties including the National Headquarters Mosque #2 (Mosque Maryam) and Muhammad University of Islam in Chicago.
