Peter King offered to resign after false deflategate report, still ‘Totally ashamed’

Recommended Posts

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen still draws the ire of New England Patriots fans after his false report in January 2015 helped turn Deflategate into a national NFL scandal. Many forget, however, that Peter King confirmed Mortensen’s report, which stated that 11 of the Patriots’ 12 footballs in the 2014 AFC Championship Game had been more than two pounds per square inch below the league-mandated limit. King, who buried an apology deep inside one of his trademark Monday Morning Quarterback columns after the report had been proven false, has not forgotten. Speaking with The Athletic’s Richard Deitch on Deitch’s sports media podcast, the longtime NFL reporter said he remains “totally ashamed” of his Deflategate reporting, calling it and another erroneous report about the Ray Rice domestic violence case the two biggest mistakes he’s made in his 29-year career at Sports Illustrated. King, who announced earlier this week he will be leaving SI for a job at NBC, also revealed he offered to resign in the wake of his Deflategate mishap. “I got a significant fact in the Ray Rice story wrong when he visited the league office and had his hearing, and then I got a significant fact wrong when I confirmed Chris Mortensen’s story about the (Patriots’) footballs being more than two pounds under pressure,” King said on the podcast. “And in both cases, I admitted it. In one case — the Patriots case — I offered my resignation to Chris Stone, and they said no. But I would have resigned, because that is something that you cannot get wrong. “I got it wrong, and I deserve all the criticism for that that comes my way. I don’t shy away from it. And when I think of my career at SI, those are two things I’m ashamed of — totally ashamed — because that can’t happen. You can’t get facts like that wrong. Was I told something by someone who I trusted that turned out to be wrong? Yes. It’s not their fault. It’s my fault. No one cares why you got something wrong. I got it wrong. If the source that I talked to was wrong, it doesn’t matter. I got it wrong.” The Patriots were fined $1 million and lost two draft picks (a first-rounder in 2016 and a fourth in 2017) as a result of Deflategate, and quarterback Tom Brady was suspended for the first four games of the 2017 season.

As they say, it takes a big man to admit when he’s wrong. And as I say, it takes an even bigger man to have been right all along. Which I was. From Minute One I called bullshit on Deflategate. And I think the grand total of writers who can say that is me, Dave and Feitelberg. And that’s it. Everyone else to some extent bought into the lies from the most carefully orchestrated witch hunt of our times. And despite all the evidence to the contrary, there are still plenty of anti-science Deflategate Flat Earthers out there clinging to the falsehoods they gobbled down like so many Spaghetti-Os.

Remember when Tommy Pigtails dropped that pass but BDN caught his and then Tommy got strip sacked in crunch time to lose the game and ran off the field crying like a b1tch?

That was the best. :first:

Deflate gate was an embarrassment to everyone involved trying to crucify the Patriots. What a sad excuse to try to stop them from winning more. To treat the most important team and player like that without actual evidence? Good to see people coming to their senses

It's the sad dynasty. Imagine being one of the dregs of the NFL for years and years, nobody going to the games, basically ignored. Then you end up doing all this winning, having on paper the goat coach and QB, and it's not respected like the other dynasties. ''Tis a cruel fate"

This what is so odd about the Patriots. The jealousy is disturbing and blatantly obvious

Why on earth would a Giants fan be jealous?

Because no one thinks the Giants teams who won were all that special.

solid point, especially the latest ones. No different than the ravens really.

Good team good defense, got lucky. Certainly not great or dynasty material.

There's never been a rule change to slow down those teams. With the patriots there's been at least a dozen.

Lol. Weak.

It's the truth :dunno:

I see it and hear it constantly in the way Gisnts fans respond. They dont like that people think their championships were more fluky than because they were that good. Hey, they won, they get credit for that. Giants fans should just be satisfied with the outcome, not the perception people have of those teams

I don't really care about perceptions. They were the best team in football from 2007-2011. Fact.

the real loser in this whole thing was Bill Nye, The Actor Playing A Science Guy... his complete failure to understand the ideal gas law... ouch!

Peter King... and even Mort just had bad sources that they trusted.

Bill Nye didn't understand science.
