The problem I have with this is that the school made a policy after the fact and then applied that policy to something that already happened.

On top of that, this policy was put in place in March.  Massachusetts state law prohibits parades (Covid-related).  Guess what happened in April?  The hockey team won a championship and the school hosted a parade, without masks... violating this policy and the state's "no parade" law.

If the school wants to make them have to live off-campus and work remotely, fine.  If they want to force them to re-apply next semester, essentially removing them as future students, fine.  But to just kick them out, charge them $16k, and get no credits?  That's WAY over the top.

They have a student code of conduct and even a pandemic policy.   I’m sure there is justification for what they did in there.   But sure, maybe they settle because of the lawsuit.

It’s possible the hockey parade deserves penalties too, but that just screams of whataboutism. 

Also, it appears the school was at different covid risk levels during these 2 events.

They know the students are at little risk.  The risk is them spreading it elsewhere.    There is documented evidence of a nursing home outbreak in Wisconsin being linked to college students.

In addition, and maybe even moreso, the school cares about money.  Too many cases and they need to stop in-person learning.  As we saw when the pandemic started, if you stop in-person learning, people reconsider paying tens of thousands of dollars in tuition.
