Sleepiest rookie sleepers for dynasty

It's still way too early to tell.

Wouldn't be the first time teams passed on a great player.

Aaron Rodgers fell to what? 24?

I be there's 23 teams or however many, that wishes they would have made a better pick, and I'm sure some of them even needed a QB.

Look back at the famous 83 draft. Dan Marino was the last of like 6 QBs taken in the 1st round. two were Elway and Jim Kelly, but the other 3? Who knows?

dont forget Brady who was drafted I think 199 overall?

that means every team passed on him at least 5 or 6 times depending on how many draft picks they owned that year.

In my dynasty I traded Tony Pollard for 3.9 and 3.10

Then drafted Kylin Hill and Jaret Patterson. I'm not sure if it was a mistake or not, but those 2 were my favorite sleeper guys. And with them both playing well, they're not really that sleepy anymore. I hope I won't regret it. But it did make me happy.

Jaret Patterson totaled over 800 rushing yards and 12 TD's in a 2-game span at Buffalo last season. It was pretty remarkable. He went undrafted presumably because of his size but most everyone on here should know who he is. The kid has the "it" factor, just a matter of if he ever gets a real chance to tote the rock. I'm definitely rooting for him.

I think it was a very good trade, you should feel better.

Patterson is going to make the roster, but he got the kiss of death from Rivera.  The dreaded "solid" description.  No one describes someone exceptional as solid, and Patterson would have to be exceptional to get touches in the regular season barring injury.  Might as well have called him a JAG.

Quote

I thought it was solid. I really did. He’s an explosive, dynamic young back. We gave him some opportunities early on with the first bunch, and he did a nice job with that. And then when the second bunch was in there, 2s on 2s, I really thought he showed his ability. You’ve got to be able to do that consistently, so we’ll see.

Not too bad.  4 out of 7 of these longshots to make the team ended up on active rosters, and I think there is at least one real player in Kylin Hill with a TBD on Elijah Mitchell.

Elijah Mitchell - Hip injury almost derailed his camp, but he ended up making the roster, and has continued to show pretty well.  I'd keep Elijah on the roster in dynasty leagues and I'd put him on a watch list in deep redraft leagues (200+ rostered) in case Sermon or Mostert go down.

Kylin Hill - Ended up winning the 3rd string runningback in GB.  He needs to be rostered in dynasty leagues, and we'll absolutely contribute when AJ Dillon or Aaron Jones gets hurt.

Kawaan Baker - Ended up on the practice squad.  It seemed like he was having trouble picking up the offense.  Cuttable.

Jonathan Adams - Cut very, very early in camp.  Likely blew his chance at an NFL career.

Josh Johnson - Seahawks practice squad.  They have a pretty deep runningback room, but he seemed like the game was too fast for him.  No need to monitor.

Jaret Patterson - Ended up getting the 3rd string job with Washington cutting both Lamar Miller and Peyton Barber and only keeping 3 RBs.  I suspect they were trying to get Barber back after he cleared waivers, but the Raiders claimed him which I thought was odd because they had a bruiser UDFA of their own who was pretty good in Trey Ragas.  I can't imagine Jaret will ever be a bell cow type back, but the problem with him is he's likely going to get picked up by someone if he's on the waiver wire, so stash him on a taxi squad if possible.

Jermar Jefferson - Another guy who won the 3rd string job.  I think he has the clearest path to playing time with Swift having nagging injuries, but Jamaal Williams is beloved, so he will be entrenched in the #2 role.  Jermar is probably a guy that can be cut and no one will notice he's on waivers.  Plus I expect the Lions offense to be pretty bad, so even if he gets a shot, I don't think he'll be a stud.  His athleticism is going to limit his ceiling.

I'm pretty high on Elijah Mitchell myself. I like what he put on film in college and I'm not sold on Sermon being a between the tackles kind of RB. He strikes me more as a Reggie Bush, get him in space type of player. If Mostert gets hurt I think Mitchell will immediately have a role.

Which is way I think those that draft both Mostert and Sermon could be making a mistake.

Smith-Marsette is an interesting sleeper as a return specialist, and someone with decent size and speed vying for the 3rd WR spot... although Dede will be more a factor, and this team usually favors a TE over 3 Wr sets. I could see him making an impact in deep leagues, or potentially standard if he gets a few returns this season...

I kind of liked him as well.  He's more of a deep threat right now, but talk about fast.  I know he only clocked in at a 4.43, but the guy just has a gear most people in the world don't, and he has a way of lulling guys to sleep and just turning on the afterburners and blowing right by them.  Watching him play, I would've guessed low 4.3s.

I agree, he seems faster than his 40 time. As a Hawkeye homer, my knocks on him are his "streaky" hands, and his OTF decision making. Although, when the hands are "on" he makes some highlight reel catches.

Looks like Eli is the winner of the sleepiest sleeper contest.  Congratulations, Mr. Mitchell!

Oh?  I din't realize it was a weekly contest.

I can't claim season-long victory yet, but the box score from Sunday adds weight to my own call:

"I've got my eye on Larry Rountree III to win the "thunder" role to Ekeler's "lightning" role for the Chargers."

lac.png&h=100&w=100Los Angeles Rushing
  CAR YDS AVG TD LONG
Austin Ekeler 15 57 3.8 1 14
Larry Rountree III 8 27 3.4 0 13
Justin Jackson 1 5 5.0 0 5
Gabe Nabers 1 2 2.0 0 2

It is a season long, but Eli is obviously going to be involved until he gets hurt.  The point was to familiarize ourselves with these undervalued and underappreciated guys so when the opportunity presents, you can pounce.

For instance, I knew Eli was good, so when I heard Sermon was a healthy scratch, I picked Eli up before the game in my redraft.

Elijah had some nice lanes but still runs a little upright. Hasty will be needed later in the year as will Jeff Wilson, Jr.

Funny you mention that.  Running upright is exactly why I said he reminds me of Jeff Wilson.  Both seem to have that tendency.
