So another thing I thought of as this thread evolved is that my son is starting to get into golf and is open to my input on clubs he should get.  I already know the irons should be forgiving/perimeter weighted/high launch, but looking at the inputs here from you two and others, I definitely think the hybrids replacing the longer irons is the way to go; heck, I'd do it if I were starting my bag from scratch.

Question is, does anyone sell sets like this?  At least the irons; can you get those 5-W?

ETA:  Duh, quick search says yes you can buy them this way.  This looks interesting, although I'd need to research those particular clubs:

Thanks.  I had thought about that -- he's not good enough yet to swing hard enough for stiff, but he's certainly strong enough to get there if he gets the swing down.  So maybe just get stiffs now and figure he'll improve into them?  I guess that makes sense.

Interesting setup; I went 15 years without a 7 iron because I lost it and wasn't playing enough to justify it, so I just played around it.  And long ago in HS and college I had a crappy set of clubs that was missing the 7, so I've spent a lot of my golf life without one.  But then I moved to near my current home course and the 7 fits really well for a lot of distances throughout, so I got one.

Also interesting on the chipper; I've recently gone back to using my 8 for a lot of low chips which I did back in college but abandoned afterward for some reason.

Good article for those interested on the distances for hybrids vs. irons.  Obviously your mileage will vary for a ton of reasons, but I read this as about a one-club increase in distance for the hybrid, which makes sense to me, as I've always used my 3 hybrid as a 2-iron distance replacement.

Bump and run is the way to go for us amatuers. I use my wedges for full swing shots and out of the sand. Around the greens I chip with an 8 iron and if the lie allows it, the old Texas Wedge.

Driver-9*, 4 wood from the 70's (Ping Eye), 3-5 Hybrids, 6-SW irons (I have 7 sets of irons), putter. I don't understand the need for all of the wedges, you can use a 7 iron, 9 iron, or sand wedge for any kind of chip shot or bump and run. When I play (and practice) enough I'm right around a 12 hcp. Any more..........I don't practice enough🙄, high 80's shooter now.

Please tell me more.  Did you buy it off of an infomercial?  Is it the Camel Toe Technology?

I don't disagree with this, which is why I'm contemplating the wedge setup.  Growing up a poor white trash golfer I basically used a PW and an 8 (at some point I got a SW but it had a rounded bottom and I only used it in traps).  I also was a skinny kid who didn't hit it long and often ended up around (but not on) the green.  I became quite proficient at up and downs, something of a Chi Chi Rodriguez with the wedge, opening the face and stance, choking down, etc.

For me I think an 8, PW, and LW are probably sufficient.  The LW is quite handy and gives me lob options I didn't quite have as a kid.

Long term I'd probably do something closer to you and others -- add a 4 or 5 hybrid and whack both the 2 and the SW.

what I would suggest is regular flex steel shafts in his irons... maybe hybrids and a stiff graphite for the driver, any fairway woods (possibly the hybrids as well).  My hybrid is very old. Taylor Made Rescue Dual. I bought it with a steel shaft and a few years ago I swapped in a stiff graphite shaft wanting to get a few more yards out of it. I don't notice much difference.

yes, you CAN use a 7 iron, 9 iron or SW for many types of shots. you can chip with a 6 iron if you want or open up and flop a PW... doesn't mean you have to if you have the extra spots in your bag. The setup you listed is 12 clubs... and while I could definitely ditch 2-3 clubs from my bag and have no issues, we get 14 so I'm going to fill the spots.

Can't speak for everyone but for me, carrying a 52 degree wedge in between my PW and SW is not at all for chips, pitches, bumps etc. It fills a gap...It's my 100 yard club. I don't want to always have to dial down a PW or try to muscle a SW. I'm better at dialing down my SW on 40-50 yard shots but ideally if I practiced enough with my 60 degree wedge, I would hit more full shots with that. The 60 also comes in handy if I have no green to work with or have to go over sand with little green to work with.

Great logic and I agree with you. It's just that since I don't practice any more a bad-especially when you hit it thin and blade it over the green. Safer playing bump and run. I used to chip with nothing but a 9 iron (good old Ping Eyes) hitting bump and runs to full flop shots. I don't hardly even try flops (when I do it's the SW) any more, what I do is carry a 71* when I play certain courses. A bad chip with a 9 iron is better than a bad chip with a more lofted club, the easier you can swing and put it on the better off you are. Hit'em straight!
