PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A former congressman from Philadelphia pleaded guilty Monday to charges related to fraudulently stuffing ballot boxes for Democratic candidates between 2014 and 2018.

Federal prosecutors said former Democratic U.S. Rep. Michael J. “Ozzie” Myers pleaded guilty to violations of election law, conspiracy, bribery and obstruction.

Monica Mendez of Port Lavaca pleaded guilty to 26 felony counts of voter fraud, including three counts of illegal voting, eight counts of election fraud, seven counts of assisting a voter to submit a ballot by mail, and eight counts of unlawful possession of a mail ballot. Mendez ran a vote-harvesting operation on behalf of a subsidized housing corporation in order to influence the outcome of a utility board election.  

After Mendez entered a guilty plea on all 26 counts and confirmed in court that all counts could be proven beyond a reasonable doubt, District Judge Eli Garza sentenced Mendez to five years’ deferred adjudication probation.

GENESEE COUNTY, MI -- The county’s former elections supervisor has reached a plea deal with prosecutors, avoiding a trial on criminal charges tied to alleged ballot tampering while she served as the Flint Township clerk following the August 2020 primary election.

Kathy Funk, who was terminated as the county elections supervisor in December, agreed to make the deal minutes before a Genesee Circuit Court jury was scheduled to hear her case on Wednesday, Jan. 25.

Funk was not required to testify about the incident that led to the charges against her, but her attorney stipulated to the underlying facts of the case -- that while she was working as the Flint Township clerk following the August 2020 primary election, Funk broke the seal on an election ballot canister so that the votes inside would not be counted.

A Center Line nursing home worker who forged residents' signatures on absentee ballot applications in 2020 pleaded guilty this week and is to serve the first 45 days of her probation sentence in the Macomb County Jail.

Trenae Myesha Rainey, 28, was charged last year with six felonies, but pleaded guilty Wednesday to three misdemeanor counts of making a false statement in an absentee ballot application, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said in a release Thursday.
