A cave is a naturally ioccuring oopening in a rock formation.  Digging or burrowing in the dirt like a badger yields a den or a burrow.

 

Any earth quake or the coming seasonal rains will take take of this.

This was my thought, but I don't know if that river rises that much to affect their dens, or if we will even get enough rain for it to make a difference. Either way, I'd think that burrowing these large holes would create some kind of issue with the integrity of the bank of the river. I am not an engineer tho, so who knows.
