Donald Trump Nominated for Nobel Peace Prize Again

Recommended Posts

Donald Trump has been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize after his name was put forward by a Republican congresswoman, citing the Abraham Accords the former president helped sign while in office.

New York Rep. Claudia Tenney said that Trump was "instrumental" in brokering the treaty signed in September 2020 between Israel and Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates, which aimed to normalize their relations as part of an overall goal to tackle ongoing tensions in the Middle East between Arab countries and Israel. Morocco and Sudan followed suit in signing similar agreements in the following months.

"For decades, bureaucrats, foreign policy 'professionals', and international organizations insisted that additional Middle East peace agreements were impossible without a resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. President Trump proved that to be false," Tenney told Fox News in a statement.

Tenney noted that the 1976 Israeli peace agreement with Egypt and the Oslo Accords in 1994 were both recognized with Nobel Peace Prizes, but so far Trump's role in the signing of the Abraham Accords had not been acknowledged.

Not impossible. Meaningless is more like it.

This thread made me wonder whether being nominated is itself a great honor.  I wondered whether the process was arduous.  Turns out there are thousands of folks qualified to make nominations and little else, other than submitting the name is required.  It seems to me a nomination means very little.  Over 300 folks were nominated this year.

Qualified nominators

A nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize is only considered valid if submitted by a person who meets certain criteria.

According to the statutes of the Nobel Foundation, a nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize is considered valid if it is submitted by a person who falls within one of the following categories, a personal application for an award will not be considered:

  1. Members of national assemblies and national governments (cabinet members/ministers) of sovereign states as well as current heads of state
  2. Members of The International Court of Justice in The Hague and The Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague
  3. Members of l’Institut de Droit International
  4. Members of the International Board of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom
  5. University professors, professors emeriti and associate professors of history, social sciences, law, philosophy, theology, and religion; university rectors and university directors (or their equivalents); directors of peace research institutes and foreign policy institutes
  6. Persons who have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize
  7. Members of the main board of directors or its equivalent of organizations that have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize
  8. Current and former members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee (proposals by current members of the Committee to be submitted no later than at the first meeting of the Committee after 1 February)
  9. Former advisers to the Norwegian Nobel Committee

Unless otherwise stated the term ‘members’ shall be understood as current (sitting) members.

After Obama got 1 for simply showing up, it's lost its luster.

Yep. It’s like someone tossing David Wright a HOF vote so he shows up in the article.

I put little stock in such honors.

True. When you give it to someone simply for being black and/or to check off virtues, it's as much of an "award" as is used toilet paper.

Wow, you are incredibly ignorant on this topic. He was given the prize based on what the committee 'hoped' would happen and not what actually happened.

Obama considered not even picking it up because he knew it hadn't yet been earned.

Here, educate yourself, you'll look less stupid next time. Boyo.
