I wouldn’t say tipping more than average shows “higher character.”

But tipping 0% when it is customary and you know the employees depend on it, such as at a restaurant, absolutely shows “lower character” unless the service was horrendous.  Assuming this story is true of course, I was also surprised by the “her and her posse racked up a bill of $100!” line, which in LA is probably like 5 drinks.  

If you don’t agree with tipping at restaurants, that’s fine, then don’t go to them.  But going and knowing going in that you will be tipping nothing is not cool.

I always tip a minimum of 30% for real good service, the drinks are full and the server is friendly and attentive.

I tip 20% if it's ok or bad service but it's not the servers fault. An under staffed restaurant, the server is genuinely overwhelmed, etc. 

I have no problem not tipping if the server is rude, unfriendly, nowhere to be found, not paying attention to the table, etc. Blatantly bad service

That’s just not the way it works in this country. Other countries, sure. But when you eat out in the US a tip is expected. If you’re cheap you can go 15%, maybe 10% if the service is pretty sh1tty. But you can’t go 0 unless it’s the worst service you’ve ever gotten in your entire life. Just the way it is.

And yes, if you can’t accept that, then don’t eat out. Don’t order delivery or Uber eats either

A recent example. My wife and I stopped at a very nice place for an early lunch. It was only us and another couple there, the place was empty. 

The server sat and talked to the bartender the whole time, disinterested in doing her job and got pissy whenever we'd ask her for anything. Almost like we were bothering her. I was full hot and told her off when I left . NO TIP 

This wasn't a cheap place either, it was almost a $100 just for lunch.
