Philadelphia Business Curfew

Councilmembers Cindy Bass and Mike Driscoll have introduced late-night curfews for businesses in the 8th and 6th districts. Driscoll said the goal is to reduce quality of life crime.

Wondering if any of the Philly geeks know more about this effort and its effectiveness.

I hadn’t heard about it but assumed from your headline they were cracking down on problem bodegas. Looks like it’s limited to some rougher districts.

I want to know if this helps, I mean....it could and it might....I assume there is some knowledge on the ground about what is going on that led them to try this.

Had t heard about it until your article. I assume they’re trying to crack down on corner bodegas where shady folks loiter all night. There’s one on every corner in North Philly.

Maybe, but that is just what it appears to be on its face.   I think perhaps a more apt assessment might be whether or not it could be true that the business instead of the people are at fault here....

I want to know....when you take away the business, what do the people then do....suddenly become good citizens?

But just for those business that may deal with "high crime" activities: 

The proposal would impose curfews on smoke shops and corner stores--forcing them to close between midnight and 5 a.m. or they would face fines.

The proposed curfew would not apply to restaurants, bars or event halls.

Supporters say the pilot program could help crack down on people who gather outside retail stores or smoke shops late at night and engage in drug-related crimes.

When you close the business, the people who loiter outside of it disperse, instead of drinking outside of it, getting into fights, dealing and otherwise being a nuisance to the neighborhood.

So, forcing stores owned and operated by minorities are being targets by the government and controlling the hours of operation.  Wonder when @The Real timschochet will be here to point out how this is systemic racism.....

I don’t know anything about Philadelphia, never been there. However I plan to go for the first time this fall to visit my nephew who was accepted into Drexel. So I’ll keep you updated!

I’m not saying it’s good legislation but I understand the rationale. If you lived in one of these neighborhoods it would suck to listen to the ruckus every night of the week. Contrary to Geek Club logic even in the hood are working people who need to get kids to school and go to jobs the next day. Even if you’re just pushing the problem around I’m sure it’s appreciated.

I think it’s easier to loiter outside a corner bodega without attracting police attention than a public park or the side of the road. Easier to get a fresh 40 too.

I get that.  I simply do not believe that the people causing the undesirable activity will say " gee whiz, they closed some stores, I guess I will change my behavior and just go home....."

Such a notion seems to ignore how people really are....
