Major lithium discovery in fracking wastewater leaves the left facing EV 'irony'

The discovery of the potential for thousands of tons of lithium to be extracted annually from wastewater generated by fracking in the Marcellus Shale leaves proponents of a green energy future at a crossroads, Republicans said Thursday.

University of Pittsburgh study suggested processing byproducts from natural gas production in Pennsylvania's Marcellus Shale basin could potentially meet nearly half of U.S. lithium needs. The typical electric vehicle (EV) requires nearly 18 pounds of lithium to power its battery. That figure grows exponentially for Teslas, according to reports.

Rep. Guy Reschenthaler, R-Pa., who represents much of the Marcellus territory, told Fox News he wants to see those on the left change their tune.

shocked, I am shocked I tell you!

This is a phenomenal discovery...

... too bad we have liberals in this country that will attempt to fock another great thing all up.

They discovered that the lithium exists, however there is not a way to extract it economically. With the concentrations that it exists at i am sure there will be many different companies working on this solutions, it would be a way to save an oil company if they were to patent the process.

There should be research on this going forward, but who knows how many years it will take to solve. I will confidently say this technology is decades sooner than fusion.

What’s the disconnect? Leave that in the ground if you can’t get it any other way than fracking. Not worth it even if the estimate were true which come on.

How is it you are so immaculately wrong on every post you make.

The one caveat I would add is economics, as well as technology, can change.   T. Boone Pickens and many others thought at one time it would never be economically feasible to extract oil sand oil.  If I remember correctly, WTI was under $20 a barrel at the time.

I think we said the same thing.

Sounds like great news to me. But of course fracking concerns me as well. Maybe we can find a safer way to do it?

You can get concerned with climate and fracking when your political leaders stop buying beach front million dollar properties and stop making bullsh1t agreements that exclude China and India

Rereading my post, I used the term " who knows how many years". Typically when people say that they mean that something is really far off in the future.

I am very literal and would have used decades if i thought it was really far off.

I think this can be solved in as little as 2-5 years as proof of concept and 10 years to move in production, but if there are unforeseen circumstances it could take longer.

Not when your team tries to eliminate the process all together. Idiot.

Interesting.  My area is undergoing a lot of fracking and horizontal drilling.  The oil companies have assured us that the only byproduct of their process is a bit of methane blow off which allegedly they capture though you see flame plumes at night and some harmless drinking water.   Of course maybe the lithium is solely indiginous to Pennsylvania.

Not every member of my “team” is against fracking. Biden for one has wisely changed his mind about it:

Perhaps you’re the idiot for making that assumption.

We are mostly.  The only thing I was adding is the increased cost of lithium itself could be enough to change the economics without a significant increase in extraction  technology.

I don’t agree. And I prefer people who when they find they’re wrong change their mind.

I prefer those who are less didactic in their beliefs which are likely to be subject to change.  Biden has noi beliefsd and no principles other than he wants to be popular with progressives.  he mimics popular sentiment thinking it will make him popular. He has not been entirely wrong.

Your brain must be pea sized if that's your proof Biden is now for fracking.

Right—the oil companies claim that.
