Helene Disaster Response: The Regime leaving Red States to die?

Recommended Posts

Disagree.  Although I’m not sure what exactly you mean by the MSM would downplay “it.”  Because you’re generally a reasonable person, I’m going to assume by “it” you mean the overall destruction from the hurricane. It’s a natural disaster, so any sane person should know it’s no party’s fault and thus there is not really any bad for Dems that can come from the MSM covering it, which they have been (albeit maybe off to a slower start due to literally not being able to get there).  If anything it gives them more ammo on “climate change.”  Although now the coverage has seemingly shifted to covering the misinformation coming from social media, so hopefully that isn’t the “it” you were referring to.

Besides, the MSM loves covering bad news.  Remember Covid and daily trackers of how many cases and deaths?  I’m sure you’ll say they only did that because they could blame it on Trump, yet IIRC pretty sure even Fox News had those trackers for awhile.

I just shared this thread on the Twitter thread which references Helene.  The issue isn’t stories being shared on X, the issue is LIES being INCENTIVIZED by X, due to users getting paid based on engagement.

Yes, by "it" I meant the destruction and responses.  You have confidence in the MSM being unbiased, I don't, and we'll just have to agree to disagree.

Ask yourself, is it better that

1. We have real time reporting, most of which is true but a few items are from foreign bots looking to stir up discord, or

2. We get a daily update paragraph from page 6 of NBC's website

:dunno:

When were you there and when did you leave?

You don’t need cell service to use your camera.

And lol that you think the “entire state sheriffs department” (which I’m pretty sure isn’t even a thing) threatened to arrest FEMA.  Good lord you’re dumb.

You come off as a horrible human in this thread.  Best to just walk away and try again with the next tragedy.

I do not have confidence the MSM is being unbiased, and basically said that by saying the Hurricane gives them more ammo for “climate change.”

I also think X is a great source for real time reporting, and do not think it should go away (nor have I ever said that).  But as the thread I shared stated, the main issue now IMO is that misinformation is being monetized.  The posts don’t need to be censored, but they could do a better job with community notes and ensuring that if posts/users get too many community notes that they should not be eligible for payments.

I think what you're seeing in this thread and in the MAGA blogosphere, is disapointment that human suffering could not be used to make political hay. So there's an attempt to lie and spread half truths about the situation.    Not saying that MAGA is the only one to do it when the situation arises.

Are you familiar with digby’s posting history here?  When he’s not constantly falling for fake news, he’s constantly lying about all the different jobs and training he’s had.   Not surprised we can add hurricane relief hero to the list.

He claims to have been there for 5 days, yet made several posts Thursday and was posting for multiple hours on Saturday.  If that was after he had returned, odd that he didn’t mention anything about pulling dead bodies from debris then, and waited to do so until going on an unhinged rant directed at me.

I didn't comment on that.

Yeah it’s possible someone may have misspoke.   But it’s also possible they lied, and considering the story has now changed to “sheriff”s department” and there has yet to be any actual evidence that this happened, that’s looking more likely.

Of course not. They’re only repeating the lessons taught them by the liberals who spent months attacking the Bush governments response to Katrina. I bought into that criticism myself. It took me years to educate myself- Bush and FEMA made mistakes back then but it wasn’t deliberate. Just as Trump made mistakes during Covid but it wasn’t deliberate. Just as Biden made mistakes pulling us out of Afghanistan but it wasn’t deliberate. I’ve come to realize that in the vast majority of cases the government is well-meaning in emergencies and when bad things happen it’s because of screwups, sometimes incompetence, but rarely maliciousness.

Unlike Biden/Harris, here’s another Dem I’ll vote for.  My favorite politician out there right  now, running for NC Attorney General:

Katrina?  Try going back to Clinton and Hurricane Andrew in 1992.

So now do you see why it’s plausible there could have been other volunteer helicopters “turned away” from landing in dangerous places?

This thread is gross.

I have some experience with large scale disaster response. You have FEMA, Red Cross, National Guard, state/county/local first responders and law enforcement and ignorant do-gooders all arriving on site simultaneously. Not to mention politicians and journalists. Thousands of residents have had their lives thrown into turmoil. They have huge, legitimate problems and need serious help. The size of the operation is immense, and all of these people and agencies are not in constant communication with each other. It is extremely confusing and complicated.

Those of you that think any large organizations are purposely making things worse for those affected can seriously GFY. If you are that convinced that everyone is a hateful worm intent on nothing more than political malfeasance or personal enrichment then you are a lost soul that has allowed cynicism and hate to take over your life. You are demonizing those trying to help, and you are making that help harder to obtain for those that need it. I can only hope none of you ever have to go through something like that yourselves to open your eyes to the reality that these organizations are trying to help. They are not perfect. They will not solve every problem. They will not save everyone. But things would be far, far worse without them there.

Life is complicated, not a focking X meme.

I understand the point loosely and it is important to get context. I don’t distrust CNN as you do for the most part.

This is very cut and dry however. Trump is simply lying about this.

The issue is that you think that politicians tell the truth from time to time.  I think they NEVER tell the truth.  They ALWAYS tell you what you want to hear.  That kind of crap doesn't register to me.  I judge by actions and policies.

Wow, I can’t believe the number of people I’m seeing that actually think that helicopter did that intentionally to disrupt the supplies.  Wow.

Have they figured out who it was, where it was from, and/or why they did it?

Most common answer I’ve seen is it was CT National Guard, but not confirmed

Thanks.  I figure it had to be some military group; most people probably don't have a Chinook in their garage.

Yep. Been trying to say this, just not as well, for pages now.

I don’t get how people can’t understand that a person being upset and ranting about losing everything isn’t some indication that people in these organizations aren’t trying to help. It’s a person whose life has been destroyed. These agencies are thrown into a unique disaster and are plowing through thousands of cases as fast as they can.

How many disasters does it take before they decide to be in constant communication and put in protocols to keep it from being so confusing?

How come there are reports from people like Musk that just want to drop off Starlink to people so they can be in communication are being told they can't?

I mean Mayorkis gave a foking speech complaining about not having enough money for Christ sake.  That's not confusing or complicated, that's incompetence.
