Mike Honcho 5,281 Posted January 28 Quote Follow the law or follow Trump - TikTok For over a week now, Donald Trump and the Justice Department have been flouting the law meant to shut down TikTok. The legislation was unambiguous and was passed by large, bipartisan majorities in both houses of Congress; it was affirmed by a unanimous Supreme Court less than two weeks ago. Shortly before the law went into effect, Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) said in a speech on the Senate floor that “without question, TikTok’s lethal algorithm has cost the lives of many American kids.” He announced that there would “be no extensions, no concessions and no compromises for TikTok.” The law that Congress passed specifically banned TikTok and imposed draconian financial penalties on the companies that provide technical support for the platform if they continued doing so. The president is allowed to grant a one-time, 90-day extension to the ban but only if there are “binding legal agreements” in place to enable a so-called “qualified divestiture” under the law — one that would (in theory at least) effectively eliminate the Chinese government’s purported control over the app and the associated algorithm. Presidents of both parties have, of course, previously issued executive orders that were later deemed unlawful, but conservatives often rail against those efforts. They ripped Barack Obama for briefly delaying implementation of key elements of the Affordable Care Act. They also routinely oppose the exercise of prosecutorial discretion in criminal law — most notably, in immigration enforcement. I'm sure right leaning objective geeks just overlooked posting about this story.

And of course, RLLD - again showing hypocrisy. Last week, the Dems were bad cause they were using tools that exist that they think should be eliminated, today, doesn't care when the President ignores laws passed by Congress and declared legal by SCOTUS. And no, it's not the hypocrisy that worries us, it's the blatant disregard of the laws.

I presume you are smart enough to know that TikTok is a Chinese Psy Op whose main purposes are to collect data on our young idiots, and to influence the thoughts of said young idiots. If you aren't smart enough to recognize this, let me know, and we can try a different discussion.

Yes-I know that, maybe you should tell the President that, who ignored the law to ban the company and gave them a 75 day extension that the law doesn't permit. By ignored, I think you mean requested an extension so that he could explore a solution (that solution including TikTok selling their US ownership). I presume that in your line of business you understand the value of a major social media provider like TikTok to the economy. But if not, let me know. Voltaire 5,316 Posted January 29 It's not a Biden EO that TikTok is dealing with, this is a full-on law that passed Congress and got that house plant occupying the presidency's signature. Trump has 90 days to force TiKTok to make a deal that gets it sold or he shuts it down. Its situations like this when he has insane leverage that he enjoys negotiating. He's told us that he'll be making pretty harsh demands of TIKTok if they want to stay in business in the US. If they don't meet those demands or negotiations break down, he'll shut them down. So, we'll see. We're at most 80 days away from finding out how this is resolved.

I presume that in your line of business you understand the value of a major social media provider like TikTok to the economy. But if not, let me know. I bolded the relevant part of the law, it seems you are ignoring that, and he is absolutely ignored the law congress passed and SCOTUS found constitutionally legal. You might try reading the OP again, or anything regarding this situation because he doesn't have to authority to give an extension unless conditions are met and they have not. He's breaking the law, you guys don't care, thus the hypocrisy. That's why TikTok when dark for 12 hours, until Trump made up his own extension, one the law does not permit and then they turned the lights back on. There are also no negotiations - the law is absolute, TikTok had to be spun off from ByteDance by January 19 or they are banned and any company that works with them gets fined. That 80 days at most doesn't exist according to the law the Congress passed. Trumps EO is absolutely thumbing his nose at the other two branches of govt. Mike Honcho 5,281 Posted January 29 From The Hill Quote TikTok briefly shut down earlier this month, but came back online within hours after Trump assured he would not enforce the law that required ByteDance to divest from TikTok by January 19 or face a ban. He signed an executive order on his first day in office last week that halted the enforcement for 75 days. He just decided not to follow the law, pure and simple. Dems have tried to eliminate the tools.....where those tools were not serving the party desires.....and then keeping and using those tools where they DO....serve the party. The Democrat hypocrisy is power above all else....no matter what trite nonsense they try to sell about law or the constitution....meanwhile, Republicans have remained intact on their filibuster position, even when it does not serve them. But hey, there is plenty of hypocrisy to go around to be sure, but you just keep believing its more on one side or the other.
